Your request for a 1 BR for $700 is not likely to be found in downtown JC. A change in strategy and expectations is likely needed.
Do you really need an apt in downtown JC? Do you need your own apartment? are you able to deviate from the $700 budget? you may need to bend on one or more of those conditions. In downtown JC, $700 will not get you a legal studio. Sharing a 3BR with two room mates may be an option. Journal Square is not far, but even there you may need to adjust your budget upward if you absolutely need your own apt. Other areas may also be considered: Queens, BKLN, other towns in NJ.

your point about construction workers is taken. However, even if the intent of unions is not to guarantee continued appointment, the net effect is that many union members are very difficult to fire or layoff. Unions of course exist to increase the bargaining power of employees, but in many people's eyes, the bargaining power has shifted too far in favor of employees. Many would argue that union members have too much bargaining power in terms of job security and benefits. As for the pension situation: in the big picture many workers (and owners for that matter) in the private sector are sick about union members continued pension benefits. Setting aside the subjective arguments that pension benefits are too generous, the practical problem of these too-good-to-be-true pensions is illustrated by the story that carpetbaggertil718 reported. Very generally speaking, whenever power is too concentrated, bad decisions can become magnified. In this case the pension control was effected by bad governmental decisions to fudge the numbers a bit. A private-sector example of how pensions and benefits can get screwed up by bad and/or desperate decision-making processes was the GM / UAW fiasco which stretched over a period of decades. But that is a story for another day.

As a retail analyst, you might be interested to know that I, as a consumer, did try to go to A&P on a Sunday afternoon. I never tried again due to the horrendously slow cashiers and the technically terrible (slow and unreliable) self-checkouts. When I do go to A&P (usually to pick up some produce or other items not available at Target), I'm always prepared for a long wait to check-out. During off-peak times, A&P considers one cashier adequate even when there are 5 or more people in line. Meanwhile at Target, there could be 8 people ready to check-out and they will have 7 cashiers open ready to zoom people through.

If that's the case, it is no wonder that they are in trouble. They sank a bunch of $$$ in the renovations 2 (?), 3(?) years ago and that place is usually not very busy at all. All kidding aside, it may not be a bad location for a whole foods or Trader Joe's. The A&P just wasn't differentiated enough. Why buy at A&P when Target and ShopRite are so close by? For better or worse TJ's and Whole Foods have a different product line-up compared to other grocers.

I would figure that the A&P near Target will be shut down.
I was predicting that that A&P location would close regardless of the parent company's situation. Grocery stores are a volume business. If you have a grocery store that is doing 'OK', if the business volume falters by as little as 1 or 2%, the store could be in trouble. Last time I checked, the Target next door offers staples such as bread, milk, eggs cereal, canned goods, some frozen foods all at a significant discount compared to A&P. It wouldn't surprise me if that A& P's sales decreased by 5% since Target added their grocery department, making that A&P's survival questionable. The consumer ultimately benefits with competition like this, but there always are casualties. In this case, I think that A&P is done. The only reason they may hold on is to go for a turnaround since they invested so much in that location during the renovation a few years back...

OK, I've given this some thought and let's just back up a step and give some bullet-proof, simple advice based on the facts:
1. you have to attend college 2. you must be a strong student (good grades, good MCAT scores) although the above two points are necessary, they are not sufficient. However, many students fail to fulfill #2, so there isn't even any need to worry about whether or not one really wants to be a physician or how to finance medical school. The decision will be made for them. So let's not put the carriage in front of the horse... If someone is a strong enough candidate for medical school, there will be ways to finance a medical school education. Therefore, this student has to do some basic research into what colleges/universities will be a good fit for him. Judging only from the information given (modest family means and SAT scores), he should realistically look into attending a state university (e.g., Rutgers, SUNY). State Universities will be more expensive than community college, but it should still be affordable by taking student loans. It will also afford the student the chance to sink or swim among 10,000 or so other fish and will afford the resources and opportunities to determine if he/she really wants to be a physician. Like I said before, if the student can't really rise to the top in a state school, he or she most likely isn't a fitting candidate to become a physician. A large state university can serve as a launching pad for a million other careers, so it may be a better back-up plan than beginning at a community college. Once he or she enters college, take appropriate first-year courses: https://www.aamc.org/students/applying/requirements/62892/msar/ First year is simple (simple, but not easy): once you have the proper courses lined up, knock them down. Aim for straight A's, talk with your advisor/counselor often and hang out with the pre-med club crowd to get tips and leads. After the first year, re assess. Are the grades good? Do you have any meaningful experiences that lead you to continue on course to medical school? Have you developed interests, passions aside from school and being a doctor? If the grades are good, it actually gets harder, because you may really have to commit to a pre-med course load. If the grades are middling, then it's easy: either double your academic efforts if you have the drive and the passion or, if you don't have the drive to perform academically, reset your course in another direction... you can rest assured that being a physician is not for you.

Has this student applied for college yet?
If he is serious about primary care medicine: http://nhsc.hrsa.gov/scholarship/ http://www1.ccny.cuny.edu/prospective/med/ I'll contribute more concrete, specific ideas shortly. In the meantime, I'd like to throw out an offer to mentor this young man. If he's uncomfortable meeting in-person, I could do the mentoring on-line only.

Dumpling Troubleshooting Tip:
If you're ordering dumplings for delivery / takeout, consider ordering them boiled. At home, place a tablespoon or two of vegetable oil in a skillet and fry up the dumplings for a few minutes at medium heat. crispy, hot, delicious.

Tried the classic Pork and Chives fried dumplings. These are B+ dumplings; very good. At $2.50 for five, it's a no-brainer. These are several rungs up from the garden variety, doughy travesties that pass for dumplings at the average chinese take-out joint and they cost the same or less than aforementioned fake dumplings. Looking forward to trying their other dishes...

A manager prioritizes important tasks to be completed and leads and enables everyone to work together to achieve the goals at hand. A boss sits back, does nothing him/herself and only gives orders. Dictating that we can no longer use plastic bags doesn't accomplish a whole lot except for adding a to-do item for shop owners to deal with.

The owners said they would be open 'soon'.
Saw the menu on the wall. This is not 'just another' Chinese take-out joint; it's a chinatown-type noodle and dumpling joint. They have a sweet patio in the back for when the weather gets warm again. Their menu isn't the typical trifold job with 100+ items. They will have dumplings (duh), soup noodles for ~ $5, and other noodle dishes. The only question is if the food will be any good. There will be only one way to find out...

I must say that I've learned alot about modern reusable diapers that I had no idea about from this thread and using them may not be as inconvenient as I thought...
It all depends on lifestyle...I could make the jump to reusables, but the following post describes what I would think is a common experience: http://offbeatmama.com/2010/04/cloth- ... -the-disposable-seduction

Dude, Let me be clear. This is not a snide remark; I am being sincere. I would recommend using disposable diapers. I have kids. If I wanted to condemn my worst enemy to the worst punishment possible, I would force him to use reusable diapers with their kids. I don't think reusable diapers are a rational option unless someone has excess time on their hands and space in their homes. Few new parents in Jersey City have either of those resources and that explains the lack of a diaper service in this area. Having said that, the Fuzzibuns thing looks like an OK design. But I'll bet you'll end up having to throw a few of those out after a few explosive events and you'll likely have to resort to disposables when you take the kid out and about, on vacation, to daycare, etc.

225 Grand St. http://www.225grand.net Just saw 225 Grand St. - for lease only. ~350 units Roof-top pool, excercise room, common lounge $200/month attached-garage parking available $500 annual amenities fee 2 BR units start at $2700, but the current offer for July 1 move-in is 13 month-lease for the price of 12 months making the monthly rent for 13 months ~$2500. They just opened up and no one has moved in yet. They didn't budge from the above numbers for me. Any questions, just ask and I'll answer if I know the answer.

Renters are winning in today's climate and property owners are losing. Well, no that's NOT the rationale. Cost structure is currently such that the relatively wealthy suburbs already pay for the majority of their school funding, so the state aid, which was a relatively small portion of their funding, will be largely eliminated. Urban school aid is being cut too, but much of the aid will remain in place. So the net effect is: Suburban state aid goes from 'a little' to 'nil' urban state aid goes from 'a whole lot' to 'a lot'
