Parking at Night without a Permit
#31

I just want to confirm that I can park on the street overnight during the week without having a parking permit. The sign says "2 Hour Parking from 8am to 5pm", but also says Tow Away Zone after two hours without a permit.

I just want to make sure I'll be ok parking here overnight and leaving before 8 the next morning.

Thanks!

Went there tonight, and overheard one of the managers that its been a "soft opening" but it looked pretty busy to me. Was very clean and upscale looking to me. Close to UKrops in VA.

Got a bunch of their prepared meals, and I thought it was reasonably priced. The only other thing I got that I could compare was some Newman's Lemonade and it was about .50 cents cheaper than Fresh Direct.

Could some Mom do a comparison of prices and quality for us?

I rent in HP, but my car is registered in CT. Could I get a monthly parking pass there, or do you need the car to have NJ plates?

It's not a bike, but I really like my Xootr Scooter. It's fun and cuts 20 mins off my commute

The example I used, with my friend visiting, was I put my car on the street. (I also have a street permit), so the in-out sequence was not broken. There was only one car in the garage.

I would love some In-N-Out right now

Heck I'd pay $20-$30 a month to not have to walk through the mall every day

I located this on the NJ.gov site, but I still wonder if the grace period is only for senior citizens or people receiving pensions?

2A:42-6.1. Grace period for payment of rent
1.A person to whom rent is due and payable on the first of the month upon a lease or other agreement shall allow a period of five business days grace in which the rent due shall be paid. No delinquency or other late charge shall be made which includes the grace period of five business days.

As used in this section, "business day" means any day other than a Saturday, Sunday or State or federal holiday.

L.1976,c.100,s.1; amended 2001, c.142, s.1.

2A:42-6.2. Violations; disorderly persons
Any person violating the provisions of this act shall be a disorderly person.

L.1976, c. 100, s. 2, eff. Oct. 7, 1976.

2A:42-6.3. Applicability of act
3.The provisions of this act shall only be applicable to premises rented or leased by senior citizens receiving Social Security Old Age Pensions, Railroad Retirement Pensions or other governmental pensions in lieu of Social Security Old Age Pensions, and by recipients of Social Security Disability Benefits, Supplemental Security Income or benefits under Work First New Jersey.

L.1976,c.100,s.3; amended 2001, c.142, s.2.

Missa thanks for your response. I haven't had any trouble paying rent and have always paid on time, but I left for the long weekend and forgot to put the check in the box before I left. I emailed the land lord and she said that since today is the 1st and because the earliest I can put the check in the box is Monday, I would have to pay the late fee. Seems kinda harsh since it is a long weekend and the the banks won't be open until Tuesday anyways, at which point she will have my check along with everyone else's.

I did find this though....

P.L. 2001, CHAPTER 142, approved July 10, 2001
Senate, No. 1679 (First Reprint)
1 AN ACT concerning the five-day grace period for the payment of rent
2 by certain renters and amending P.L.1976, c.100.
3
4 BE IT ENACTED by the Senate and General Assembly of the State
5 of New Jersey:
6
7 1. Section 1 of P.L.1976, c.100 (C.2A:42-6.1) is amended to read
8 as follows:
9 1. A person to whom rent is due and payable on the first of the
10 month upon a lease or other agreement shall allow a period of [5] five
11 business days grace in which the rent due shall be paid. No
12 delinquency or other late charge shall be made which includes the
13 [5-day] grace period of five business days.
14 As used in this section, "business day" means 1[means]1 any day
15 other than a Saturday, Sunday or 1State or federal1 holiday.
16 (cf: P.L.1976, c.100, s.1)
17
18 2. Section 3 of P.L.1976, c.100 (C.2A:42-6.3) is amended to read
19 as follows:
20 3. The provisions of this act shall only be applicable to premises
21 rented or leased by senior citizens receiving Social Security Old Age
22 Pensions, Railroad Retirement Pensions or other governmental
23 pensions in lieu of Social Security Old Age Pensions, and 1[premises
24 rented or leased by disabled persons]by recipients of Social Security
25 Disability Benefits, Supplemental Security Income or benefits under
26 Work First New Jersey1.
27 (cf: P.L.1976, c.100, s.3)
28
29 3. This act shall take effect immediately.

So is the "grace period" only senior citizens or government employees, or does it also cover me, Joe lunch box?

I saw this on another site...

Making Rent Payments in NJ: There is a 5 day grace period for rent payments before a late charge may be assessed. See - 46:8-19

Trying to figure out where I can find 46: 8-19 and find the exact wording....

Rent Late Fee?

Does anyone know the specific location of where it says in the law, that a landlord must give a couple day grace period when it comes to accepting rent before they can charge a late fee (Especially when rent day falls on a holiday weekend!)? I saw the general statement on this website...

http://www.lsnjlaw.org/english/placei ... terfour/index.cfm#payment

"The law states that a landlord must allow a tenant a period of ?five business grace days? to pay the rent. If a tenant pays the rent in the five-day period, the landlord may not charge a late fee. In counting the five business days, do not include Saturday, Sunday, or a national or state holiday."

Is that true, and if so where can I find the exact legal text?

Thanks guys and gals!

I'm a little biased but for the monthly rent you're looking to spend I would check out Hamilton Park first. Lots of people like you. Lots of places to eat close by. Lots of people out walking their dogs. The park is a nice place to hang out. Easy commute to NYC. I think as safe as it gets in JC. Get to shop every afternoon on the way home (at least my girlfriend does :) ).

I just moved in to the Hamilton Park area with my girlfriend and we feel pretty safe. Still have to remember that it is a city and so you have to be smart, but I really like our area. There seems to be a lot of 20/30 year olds commuting to the city in the morning and at night.

Other parts of Jersey City are very iffy (browse the Crime Forums), so I personally wouldn't move anywhere west/south of Hamilton and Von Vorst Parks. Walk around where you're looking both during the day and at night so you get a sense of the area before you take the plunge.

Good luck!
