I seriously wonder what inspires people to respond to threads in this manner. "I have nothing relevant to say because I don't shop there so instead I'm just going to give a rundown on where I do grocery shop for no apparent reason"

that said, I am psyched to learn that there's a Stop n' Shop in the Heights.

everything changed in this community: zoning laws, as extended families packed into one-family neighborhoods. tax base, as the hasids are disproportionately on public assistance (studying the torah for a living doesn't bring in the big bucks). and the school system has been utterly decimated.

I am admittedly biased against fundamentalist anything, and this particular group of fundies has a clear agenda and a rock-solid voting bloc.

if a well-organized group of orthodox muslims had done the same thing to a community, the entire nation would be up in arms.

Pachysandra is great for these spots. it is invasive, though, so best used in a fenced yard/garden, as opposed to a wide-open yard.

Personally, I have no gripe with Rainbow. It's whatever. I also have no gripe with somebody wishing to open something else in that space.

I do have a gripe with people coming in from out of town, acting like buffoons, driving drunk, smashing bottles, and generally being shitheels, then heading home to other towns, leaving me with their broken glass and piss.
When Porta opened, the amount of people that fit that description increased somewhat. South House the same. Talde too to a degree.
This is absolutely part of a changing neighborhood scenario. With successful nightlife comes the crappy byproducts of successful nightlife. You know, jerks.

What I think a lot of you guys here are missing is that it's ok to both want change AND to have reservations about the opening of a bar from an ownership group that specifically courts an out of town client for weekend revelry.

I'm going to wait to see what the theme of the place will be before I get my knickers fully in a twist. If it's something like Porta or South House, cool. I dig the theme of good looking places with solid date night menus that turn into party spots on Friday.
If it's 2Republik, I'll be a little bummed about it. I really don't wanna see people flooding my street looking for pitchers of Coors to wash down their reheated frozen wings. We really truly don't need a place like that on the plaza. It won't add anything to the neighborhood to the people that live here.

This is it EXACTLY.

As I lie here in my home of ten years, listening to the celebratory screaming and Honking that erupted on Newark Ave at 2:30am, I wonder if anyone calling this "progress" lives within 2 blocks of the plaza.

it's great that an app steered you out of the bubble. now for the downside...
I fear Waze is going to make mornings in DTJC more of a sh*tshow than they already are, as more and more drivers are guided off the turnpike and through downtown to avoid tunnel traffic.

People are justifiably worried about the "Hoboken bro" element getting worse and continuing to affect our quality of life and enjoyment of our city. And residents not being the target demo of these new businesses.

this is a well-reasoned and pleasantly-put-forth argument. so of course it's getting shouted down.

Right?? Thanks. Smh at some of these replies.

Not sure about the others, but I'm talking about Newark ave/dtjc of about 10-12 years ago, or even 6-7 years ago (heck I even liked it in the late 90's/early 2000's). Fun and diverse stuff was happening then - more art, more diversity of people, you got to really know your neighbors because we were the ones going out and making stuff happen and going to support the businesses, bars, restaurants. People were friendly to each other and greeted each other on the sidewalks all the time. You could go bar hopping and see friends and familiar faces pretty much everywhere. Hoboken bros stayed in Hoboken. What we had was special and its depressing that the growth trend didn't continue in the vein in which it was headed because that was great and had a lot of variety to offer and potential to get even better.

I spent 17 years living there from '96-2013. As a single woman that whole time there I never felt unsafe. So glad I got out when I did as I really can't stand what's happened to an area that I really use to adore living in and going out in as recently as just 4-5 years ago. Everything is being sold out now. I don't go down there anymore because last I tried a night out there a year ago, it was such a let down. :(

I don't doubt your bad experience but I usually go for a walk down Newark Ave Fri/Sat nights and the pedestrian plaza is nothing like downtown Hoboken. This past weekend it was flooded with kids playing, couples, families, and other people like me wandering around. There was absolutely no lack of diversity you cite (I too remember DTJC 15 years ago). Porta did not have a line of bros with popped collars, and I must have run into 10+ people I know just from living in the neighborhood. Anywhere you go there will be annoying drunk people but I question whether anyone complaining here actually spends time in the area on weekend nights. It's really not bad at all.

will this utopia survive when one of the largest storefronts DOES become bro-topia, I wonder?

The shitty part isn't having to pay the extra fare, but figuring out which subway lines are operating on weekends because the MTA also has a boatload of service disruptions.

I'm sitting on the shuttle from WTC, and we are crawwwwwwling up 6th ave at a snail's pace.

The first stop isn't until 4th street, so here's me missing that movie date.

It's gonna be a long 4 month stretch for PATH riders, but a lucrative one for the MTA, as I don't see many of us doing this more than once.

If the people think they are transgender and commits sexual crimes against females, who are you to say otherwise?

Here are some of the transgender people in the video who committed crimes:

Norwood Smith Burnes: dressed as a women to expose himself to children
Mark Lazarus: dressed as a woman to assault a woman in a public bathroom
Christopher Hambrook: dressed as a woman to enter two women?s shelter and sexually assaulted women.

Do you even know the f#$king difference between someone dressed in opposite gender clothes and being transgendered?
You are really ignorant or just hateful but most likely both.

I vote both.

Now can we please kill this thread? There is no fixing stupid. Homophobes and bigots will not be swayed by reason. We just have to wait for them to grow old and die, taking their twisted interpretation of the teachings of a magical sky ghost with them.

In the meantime, we can but wonder in dismay as to why conservatives are so obsessed with genitalia.

The emergency vet in Lyndhurst is incredible, but if he's no longer seizing, it's probably okay to wait until morning to take him to your regular vet.

Seizures in dogs don't always signal a life-threatening condition.

A 10-15 minute seizure is pretty long, though. Was he full-on seizing that entire time?

Here's some good info:
http://www.vcahospitals.com/main/pet- ... ures-general-for-dogs/903

"Treatment is usually begun only after a pet has:
1) more than one seizure a month,
2) clusters of seizures where one seizure is immediately followed by another or
3) grand mal seizures that are severe or prolonged in duration"

Good luck!

I agree. I heard the rumor a month or so ago. Seems like there has always been a general disconnect between where JC is at in the present moment and where business owners or restaurateurs think JC should be at or how fast it'll get there. Disconnect is probably occurring on many levels (landlords, business owners, etc.).
Strange that they would put so much time and money into these operations and bail, but you never know what's happening behind the scenes or who is paying for this stuff.

I agree with you on that disconnect. My belief is that landlords are putting the cart before the horse as far as rent goes and that restauranteurs are sometimes blindly ignoring that we are still very much a bedroom community.

But....don't the Talde guys own the building?

especially in the summertime, when the DelForno Ditch fills with stagnant pools of mosquito-nursery water.

100% THIS. While I am always against any form of governmental power to punish or take away personal property, I think this is very much justified. That hole next to "future home of Hard Grove Cafe", the unfinished Hard Grove construction, and the Monty boarded up place, are eyesores and it really is unfair for Restaurant Row, and the community at large, to allow those conditions to continue as such. There should be some sort of penalty for unfinished construction that would spur the owners to complete their projects, or to sell to someone else.

Agreed; though if it wasn't written very carefully, the ordinance could encourage even more corruption/graft/kickbacks. "You're almost out of time....want to pass inspection? 20K or you lose everything!"

Forfeiture shouldn't be part of the penalty. Rather, "build by X date, or sell at market rate to someone who will."
