Esperanto's, at least under the "new" owners (coptic Egyptians?) was the closest thing to cardboard I have ever eaten.

Esperanto's was the best pizza in JC a decade ago. Then they changed owners and the new owners drove it into the ground. Worst pizza ever. Are the original owners re-opening it? Oh please oh please.

Burgers are good and huge! I like the open front aspect of the place too, something that seems late to catch on in Jersey City.

Ducky's deserved to fail, but the DM liquor store was nice and unlike the place on Jersey you could get a six pack for under $10. There wasn't anything wrong with Pop's but there wasn't anything great about it either, just a run-of-the-mill dive bar.

Duckys Dumplings, the liquor store / grocery by Dixon Mills, and if you go back more like 4 years, Pop Merrigan's, but I don't deny that downtown has more options now than any time since I've lived here (about 10 years).

Yeah, the number of places opening far exceeds those closing. In the past year or two, we've seen:

30 Acres
Choc Au Pain
Roman Nose
The Bistro on Grove (opening soon)
Orale Mexican Kitchen
The Dopeness
Wings to Go (their brick oven pizza is cheap and decent)
Razza where Bar Majestic used to be
Brightside Tavern
Two Boots
Kraverie

I'm sure I've missed some.

What has closed in that time that hasn't been replaced with something new?

People probably buy more in a place that induces a bit of class anxiety.

Won't disagree with you on the food part, but the shopping part is kind of going against what people are saying here. Nicer (more expensive) shops are starting to open up.

The no toy stores thing is interesting, especially since there's no trivial explanation like a big box Toys r Us next door -- Target has a toy section but it can't be that comprehensive.

Maybe toy stores in urban areas are especially prone to theft/fraud? The one time a criminal somehow used my debit card while it was still in my possession it was at a Manhattan Toys r us.

Maybe it's the demographics of the area? It seems like many families, especially the more well off ones, leave Jersey City right around when their kids hit school age.

As far as the gap leaving, over the last 10 years it's turned into banana republic with jeans -- no big loss in my mind.

In any case, the mall does seem a bit richer than most of its patrons but perhaps this is by design.

GONE. All Gone.

The Guy shop now going to be a Michael Kors store. The upstairs is going to be something else female oriented as well
I'm really starting to wonder what is up.

And to the previous poster, there are no toy stores. (they do pop up stores around Christmas and then they disappear).

No pet stores either.

I think they are trying to make Newport Mall for the 1% or something.

Booker deciding to run right now does seem out of character. With all of his kitten saving and ghetto living, I almost expected him to either wait until 2014 to run for Senate or wait until 2016 to run for governor after a slimmed-down Christie inevitably gets the GOP nod.

In the end, keeping a democrat in Lautenberg's seat might generate more good than Booker staying in Newark for another year or two, but it's a departure from his MO.

There would be more of this sort of thing, on all of the blocks, if the large majority of white families didn't leave when their kids reach school age. Downtown JC is a bit of a kid-free bubble.

Spay and neuter your pets -- there are many more pets than there are loving and competent owners out there. They should probably also spay and/or neuter whoever left this poor dog to die on a roof.

Insanely bad. Must be a single owner, because there is no way more than one person would think this would be a good idea.

Food sucks, but this is a lounge. The food is there to support the bar. So let me understand the reasoning behind opening a bar with no liquor licence. Wow.

What sucks is that the landlords of DT JC don't realize what they have. They keep renting to these Jokers. They could do so much better.

This place has 6 months and a few gun-play incidents before it closes.

Re: PATH every 35 minutes on the weekends???

Part of the problem is the ridiculously slow pace of the work. It took them three months to rebuild two small staircases at the Grove st station a few summers ago. They had one at a time blocked off and were "working" on it almost every day. Think about how insane that is. Entire large buildings can be constructed in that time frame and it took 3 months for two small staircases.

There is no explanation for this other than corruption. PATH riders are being subjected to ever-diminishing service because of corruption.

This sign means:

Nobody can park here 8-10am Monday & Thursday.

Anybody can park here from 8-5 Monday through Friday, but people without the proper zone permit can only park in this ZONE (not space) for 2 hours.

Basically, in downtown Jersey City if it's a Saturday or Sunday, or if it's a weekday between 5 pm and 8 am, you're ok to park.

The zone thing is VERY unevenly enforced; in some places they ticket for it, in some places (e.g., Brunswick st area) they almost never do.

Can't be worse than Jordan's lounge, which needs to have additional age restrictions to keep their customers under control.

No, especially if you're female and/or plan on walking from the JSQ PATH. It's not the worst part of Jersey City, but it's a 10-15 minute walk from the worst part of Jersey City.

In the past couple of years downtown lost a boon to the community, the 58 gallery, mostly because the city was effectively antagonistic toward the people who ran it.

I wish someone would have asked the candidates how they would have addressed that situation, where the complaints of an overly-sensitive neighbor who can't stand a bit of extra noise and sidewalk traffic once every other month trumps the entire arts community here.

We need to instill more respect for the commons, especially across ethnic/racial groups. People only treat the city like it's trash because they lack respect for their neighbors, and ultimately, themselves.

This discussion is very interesting. First off, no one should be harassed and no, it doesn't come with living in the city. City living does not equate to being harassed. "City" is generally an urban settlement with a large population and with that comes more pollution, more cars, more restaurants, more people, etc as compared to the suburbs or rural areas. Harassment is not associated with "city". That is like saying terrorism is associated with Muslim which is also blatantly biased and completely subjective.

As far as project housing, I think it is safe to say that although the idea might be noble, the implementation and "checks and balances" has been a colossal failure.

But to get right to the point, our schools in JC are failing our children (any viable measure of this proves my point - test scores, graduation rates, reading level, math level, etc.) so when these children grow up to be delinquent teens and delinquent young adults, are you really surprised?

Forget about your tax dollars funding public housing, how about your tax dollars funding these failing public schools - Dickinson, Snyder, Lincoln, Ferris? By any reasonable measure, they should all be closed down ASAP.

And yes, I'm aware that there are bright kids at these schools and hard working teachers but when overall, you have a failing institution, one or two kids or teachers does not justify failing the majority of kids. It's like a company with 1 or 2 hard workers and 99% failures. Would that company ever last more than a day? Can you imagine having your tax dollars pay for that company to stay open and produce a piss poor product? Unfortunately, the piss poor product that our JC public schools produce are the delinquents you see in the streets.

So far, no one running - Healy or Fulop - has really addressed what they will do to make our children more competitive.

For better or worse, all of us live in a city where someone at some point thought it would be a good idea to put public housing projects next to (what would eventually be) prime real estate. I have mixed feelings, but I almost think it makes sense to redevelop the projects along Manila based solely on the value of the land they sit on.

Was just walking down to Grove St Path down Manila street. Something which I do almost every day. Today there was a group(3) of us headed there we got to 4th and we heard yelling from across the street coming from some kids who had to be in their late teens early 20's. they were calling us fat and swearing. I asked if he had a problem and he told me to suck his d*ck and and other derogatory terms regarding our sexuality. We left and walked a couple of blocks. And decided that it was unacceptable to be treated this way and decided to report it to the non emergency number at the nearby district. Essentially we recounted what happened but what pissed me off more than the whole instance that started this was the response from the police which was "what do you want us to do?" I don't know. Maybe keep the streets safe from harassment and make this city the safe on that the politicians are calling a pedestrian city. They said they would send a car but we did not stick around to see if they came.

So disappointed.

I had the pork tacos at Ginfi last night and they beat the taco truck hands down, they're better than Orale, and they're at the very least competitive with Taqueria.

Ginfi is a bit shabby inside for a downtown spot, and they're not particularly fast or cheap, but for mexican takeout I think they might be the best in town.

I will be voting for Fulop, but I'd be interested to hear from any lawyerly types on here as to whether there's any substance to Healy's defamation claims -- my guess is that the ad runs pretty close to the line of what's legal and what's not. On the other hand, I can't imagine that Fulop wouldn't have been savvy enough to make sure this wouldn't be an issue.

In any case, I don't fault Fulop for going down this road -- it's sort of appalling that our city has such low standards that Healy can be competitive in this election.

Went there for the first time last night. Food is fantastic, not super expensive, but the openness of the space not to mention the tequila conspire to get you to order more food than you would on a typical trip to Taqueria.

The little sandwich shop on Grove near the PATH station makes some of the best sandwiches in town. I am really confused as to why its evening hours are so inconsistent and short. I'd think they'd do great business and make even more profit staying open until 9 or so given the location. PATH trains coming back from NYC are pretty full until close to 9 PM.
