Re: OPEN JERSEY AVENUE TO LIBERTY STATE PARK!!

Home away from home

The Jersey ave extension is definitely going to happen. We just don't know when.
Traffic calming would be needed to deter people from speeding....speed bumps, or traffic lights.

Second, I have been walking home from Grove at night to Lafayette and have been tempted to walk down Jersey ave into LSP. The only problem is that it is desolate and creepy. Pedestrian safety and crime is what's on my mind. If someone attacks you there, good luck trying to get help.
If it was a regular well lit roadway it would be much better to walk and commute for those that are trying to make it to the path station or downtown. Although the downtown residents have expressed that this will create a problem the fact of the matter is that Lafayette is plagued with traffic trying to get TO downtown. It should be expected that DT jersey city will continue to be more and more congested with more people trying to live near NYC. If you want more space or less traffic there are beautiful huge spacious homes with driveways all over, Bergen Lafayette and Greenville, not to mention cheaper!

Ditto on that one MDM. I am very disappointed.
I have addressed these issues years ago when the waterfront was full speed ahead and we had a million outside contractors working in JC. What is union LAbor? I will tell you. It's New York and Non- Jersey CIty people coming into our city, making prevailing wages, causing traffic coming in, and leaving with fat paychecks. For those who are not familiar with PLA agreements PLEASE read it. you will be appalled.
The agreements stated that a certain percent of JC residents are to be on these sites. They don't even come close to meeting these requirements. and STEVE VIOLA and the rest know this.....

This is horrible. Union LAbor won't help JC in the least bit. If it does please show us......

Huge dissappointment.

I tried this on Saturday and it was great. The Ny Strip that my husband had was awesome and I had the salmon.
They have great drinks and a good wine list.
The staff was helpful and friendly. It's going to be an awesome spot for brunch since its going to be open since 7 am everyday! Great stop before heading to the city!

Fake JCPD decals on cars
#36
Home away from home
Home away from home

Is it me or is there a growing number of these cars parked at fire hydrants, corners, etc. with those JCPD decals that say " official business"
In NYC they are cracking down on them since most are fake and people impersonating cops.

I wonder how JCPD feel about some charlatans around here impersonating them and parking wherever the heck they want.

I will definitely be reporting any I see and can confirm they aren't cops. The problem I fear is that some might be cop's family members taking advantage.....If I can't park at a corner or fire hydrant on my block why should others be able to?

has anyone else been seeing this?

Not sure what you are looking for ?
Are you looking for licensed and insured companies or just local handymen who do this for cash?
Permits are not necessary for most but the Vent issue might be more serious......
I have used several local people but they are companies.

Kudos to Steve Fulop, Viola, and the others who voted against this even though it still passed we are all seeing the trend here. We have 2013 to make a difference and put Fulop as mayor. WE need to clean house.
What do these developers do for JC. They don't even hire local contractors. You see construction companies from all over except Jersey city. What about keeping the money in the city. I don't know how much abuse Jersey City can take......they build and want to make as much profit as possible on the backs of the tax payers... ridiculous.

Re: Jersey City's Ward E (Downtown) to lose some residents as ward boundaries are redrawn

From someone who was born and raised in Ward F, educated in Ward F, went off to college, is a homeowner and is still here, I welcome this change with the hope that the additional folks can help us continue to raise our voices to get the services that we need in Ward F.
Someone asked what you can expect coming into Ward F? Well, that we have a long way to go and that those who are spoiled by a great councilman like Steve will realize they have to work more to get their voices heard to get the simple quality of life issues resolved that you so take for granted in other parts of the city.
Whether my statement here is welcomed or not it is obvious why Ward F is in the condition it is in but if you look a little farther away from Ward E you will find that there are more homeowners, educated, business people in Ward F than you might think.
Ward F has been a struggling part of the city for MANY years, where the local downtown developers have thrown most of the "offsite affordable housing" and where crime and drug dealing is more visible, where mass transit is substandard and even with all those issues we have flourished and have been able to live, work, and participate in countless city meetings and community meetings to improve our life here. Absentee owners in our area usually live in NYC, upscale suburbs outside of our town etc.
Let's hope that Ms. Massey can work with us and follow Steve Fulops work ethic. That's my 2 cents!!

Welcome to Ward F , don't worry we don't bite!!

I get the NY feel when I walk near van vorst and when I see the shops on Grove.... I mean its not exactly NY but it's getting there....NY is full of cars too. I work there.
Mass transporation here is really inept. Not sure if the traffic study shows more vehicles or if traffic will just be redirected. I will most definitely attend any meetings and want to see good presentations on this.

I do remember residents begging and pleading for better mass transit services to avoid cars coming into Downtown, especially when the NO. 4 bus was cut.

The majority of residents are not trying to make it to west side in the morning and are not trying to make it to bayonne. The light rail stop is a long walk and I have made it faster to the path then to the light rail especially if I cut throught pathmark, but it sure is a pedestrian UN- friendly walk.
When Holloway was pushing for the light rail the residents were tricked into thinking we would get a stop at Bramhall which would of help out a bit. As far I can see most people are packing the bus rather than get on the light rail at rush hour, Not to mention some will not walk from the light rail at night. Have you seen it after 6:30? Its desolate and dark as it gets later in evening. Remember its not only accessiblity its also a safety concern. Currently you can technically walk from LSC to Jersey Avenue but are people really enticed to walk all that at night?? Not really.

The comments at past meetings is that the Light rail "circumvents the neighborhood" and when people ask me about living here I don't sugar coat it. It's a work in progress. It's not a 5 minute walk to the light rail unless you live at the warehouse bldg adjacent to the light rail.
Bicyclists would love to have a lane and be able to ride into downtown "safely"....I mean like you said, the tranportation needs to be there. With the wards changing let's see what the new year brings us.....whatever changes happen I am sure many will not be happy to be pulled from Ward E and brought into let's say Ward F....I would be too if I lost Steve as a councilman.

I think the jersey extension is still a go... but not sure as I have not been to any meetings recently. From what I have heard at other meetings there are various reasons why people are in favor of it or oppose it.
I think that the engineers and traffic planners have a study on what is best on flow of traffic and I trust that the experts can come up with something feasible and more convenient. I can say that the Lafayette residents would love an easier, safer, and WELL LIT walk to the PATH and second some have argued that the traffic is not for Lafayette it is meant for downtown, meaning if you live in downtown you should expect the highly congested rush hour "NY" feel on the streets. I don't think there is anyway you will get a suburban feel ever in some of the busy streets down there but yet people are still willing to pay double rent on Jersey Avenue then let's say Pacific. Let's be honest here please.

I rather have the traffic than what we have here on the other side, which is lack of services, lack of food places and hang out spots, and and more crime and drug dealing. We have a light rail stop that services outsiders and commuters and not the residents. I can keep going with this...regardless it certainly isn't the Lafayette residents that have a voice. We haven't had a voice in years.
That's my 2 cents.

The Lafayette Section was always part of Ward E until it was also bundled into Ward F. No one knows the reason for this. They should of left it as it was. We are already serviced by the East district police department and have natural borders adjacent to Grand and the future opening of Jersey Avenue into Liberty State Park.
Regardless, we are a city. A ward is not a city and all wards and council members should work to make the ENTIRE city work not just one section.

So sorry about this event but glad it turned out ok. I am glad you were quick thinking. People want to know why it happened? Because you were at the wrong place at the wrong time that's all. Bad things can happen anywhere and anytime. These carjackings and attempts have been happening here for the last 20 years..Especially off Communipaw because its a speedway between Newark and here. Thank god your ok. thanks for letting the JCLIST family know.

Yes it bothers us. Especially when Downtown is getting this special treatment and the rest of the city is lucky to get the potholes and sidewalks fixed. I am still waiting for the city to do curbs on our block and commission a fire hydrant. its been 6 years now and counting. It is what it is. FOr some unexplained reason DTJC is I think the only sections getting this. If anyone has a reason why please clarify....thank you

The building department is bad enough trying to do their own work. they won't have this.
If you don't have your original deed and property documents ( a survey is always part of that) you need to go to hudson county Record offices and pay for a copy ....hope this helps.
if you need to do a survey than you need to hire a surveyor to mark out and verifying your building property line and locate whatever you need.

hope this helps

A Licensed master plumber is not authorized under NFPA unless he has the fire suppression license. It's a very specific license. If you need more info you can PM me.

Don't hold me to it but a 3 story with basement brownstone can cost anywhere from 8,000-15,000...and that's because you have to open walls and deal with what's existing so who knows unless you have a professional come in and give you an honest look.

ditto on what jc dweller said.

sprinklers are a requirement. In my experience once homeowners see this they don't go for it. You have to be willing to spend because it's not a simple change.
I haven't seen one in a while. It's not a simple process. I would suggest using an expeditor to help with it if you are serious. Most people have 3 units Illegally.

Like someone said here, do not rely on hearsay because most people are not familiar with proper procedures.

good point. I use monthly passes so I haven't used a daily pass in a while. I am going to take a look. I was just curious to see. And you have 90 minutes to use the card.

I didnt know there were location codes to know where you bought it but why does that matter? you can ride the rail for 90 minutes on the same card.

I know plenty people pass off cards. Just wanted to warn everyone that they smack you with a $75.00 ticket, just found that one out too..

It seems they don't want to say it they just want to ticket people. I disagree with the way HBLRT handles this.
There should be different prices for stops. If you travel from Bayonne to Union city you should pay more than if you travel from Liberty state park to exchange for example...

Sharing Light rail Tickets FYI
#51
Home away from home
Home away from home

I have taken the light rail for years now and have always seen people leave their tickets on the machine if they still have time on it. Sometimes I have even handed it to someone when for example i go just one stop.'
Well yesterday I witnessed to people get stop with tickets and the officer tell them "we know you didn't buy these tickets"
I was shocked. I have emailed NJ transit and looked everywhere to see if there is a rule as to passing on a ticket which still has time left on it... and nothing..

I am figuring HBLRT has a station where they are watching every station? If the surveillance is so good I expect that there should be ZERO crime between some of the stations suce as LIberty to Richard.

JUST wanted to put this out there...I guess everyone should buy their own ticket but I don't know if 2.15 is fair for someone that has to go one stop anyway.....

I'm sorry to tell you but Grove is not mugging-proof. JC has random acts of violence all over. Over in my neck of the woods it is considered a tougher area but I have never had a problem in all these years.
But when I had my luxury vehicle and visited friends in downtown my car was broken into 4 times in 2 years.
That is why a lot of downtowners are moving into Lafayette. They get much more space and parking and nicer apts for less. I am not selling the area but if i had to pay 1400 for a one bedroom 3 story walk up with no parking I would feel cheated.
Regardless, know your neighbors and get involved with your local community group and you will feel at home.
Welcome!

Re: Structural question about row house

To be sure about the venting when you go to do the work you need a licensed master plumber that will certify this work, pull a permit out with the Jersey City building department and ensure that it will not be life threatening.
PSEG can do this but it has to be their licensed master plumbers to do it, not a regular meter reader.
Doing it any other way involves a fine to the home owner and also to the contractor that does not hold a NJ master plumber license. FYI

Building Department fines...

If anyone out there has gotten a fine from the building department because your contractor didn't pull a permit, YOU ARE NOT LIABLE TO PAY IT. The contractor has to be fined.
PM me if anyone out there is having issues please. Unless the entire JC community starts becoming knowledgeable about how a building department really should run we will all suffer both financially and emotionally.

i keep hearing horror stories from local JC residents but people are afraid to speak up about the building dept. Don't be!
thank you

the first floor will be retail and it is available for anyone. it should be complete by July.
I am not a broker but I know some people that are working on it. if you want more info PM me and I will give you the contact names.
There were leaks due to the fact that the structure was old but those have been corrected and other things are under way. From what they have told me since it is a historic district everything done there has to go through some mayor paperwork and approvals by historians.....
I was looking to live there also....

This is a sad and very possible result of a bad installation of either a hot water heater or boiler. I am not sure what the investigation will show but more than a carbon monoxide detector , proper installation of systems are a matter of life and death.
More often than not we see people looking for shortcuts, not taking out permits, and finding a local handyman to install systems that require a license master plumber to install. Before we go blaming the inspectors a landlord or owner is responsible to hire the proper person and THEN the inspectors would know this work was even done.

People complain all day about plumbers prices, and how easy it should be to install these things. Everytime my dad goes to install a system he knows he is responsible for people's lives! This is an eyeopener for people who want to do things themselves...Saving a few hundred dollars can cost you your life savings and time in jail.

Let's be careful and I hope that the family of this girl can find some consolation. My prayers are with them.

Check your fire alarms, carbon monoxide and when you see a handyman ask to see his credentials!!
