The understatement of the year.

It seems like formalized advertisements are all about measuring up or trying to "match" NYC.

Jersey City is an historic, fantastic place, all in its own right. Somebody want to put me on the PR payroll or what?!

Unfortunately, no. But I've had a couple of similar inquiries. Maybe we can schedule a screening between now and Monday evening. PM me if you're interested.

I'm going to give this another try. The Webmaster removed both mentions of the following broadcast. One he said he removed because a link in the post did not function. I also started a new thread with this broadcast information - as a public service - and he removed that one too because it's not allowed to post the same information twice, he says.

Anyway, without any links that might be broken, and again as a public service, please note:

TODAY, SATURDAY, 4/17
One-hour broadcast of public forum with
ten of the sixteen candidates for
Jersey City Board of Education
from March 25 event hosted and moderated
by Parents and Communities United for Education (PCUE).

To say nothing of the Uptown JC choices, like the Indian smorgasbord (like that ethnic clash-chat?) on Newark Ave. west of Kennedy Boulevard, or the burgeoning restaurant row on Tonnele Ave. between Newark Ave and Broadway - Egyptian fish restaurant (Suez Canal), Ecuadorian fish and Moroccan everything, including sweets. They're all really good.

OK, so it's 2 miles from Grove PATH. There are lots of good places to eat downtown, but if you're really bored, there are a zillion restaurants and other places of interest all over Jersey City, which is HUGE, folks!

"What keeps JC down" is the mostly dead weight provincial, corrupt, small-minded, pandering, bossism governance Jersey City has endured for a hundred years.

Uptown?

So, I moved uptown almost five years. And by uptown I mean, not downtown.

I live in the McGinley Square neighborhood. At some point I started referring to everything that's not "downtown Jersey City" as "uptown".

A couple of months ago, I started a Facebook group with the name Uptown Crew for people who live uptown. Then feedback inspired me to open it to people who are interested in uptown things.

With almost one hundred members, I'm extending the franchise: www.uptowncrew.net.

I'll cover history, business, people and other stuff on the website as well as the FB group. You're invited to subscribe to the webpage, join the FB group, and send along your comments and feedback.

Downtown Jersey City? We love ya! Come on up and see us sometime.

Sweetie, aka Celeste, PLEASE say you will reinstate grab-n-go dinners should demand pick up again?

Your food is so delicious and satisfying, I can't imagine it would not be a big seller. Maybe it's just a little spring fever pulling grab-n-go customers away.

Say you'll reconsider at some point?

Am I jumping the gun to assume you would take catering requests? "Grab-n-go on demand" - how does that sound? What kind of notice would you need?

I am still surprised, but no longer shocked, by the cynicism and lack of empathy people display sometimes, especially online where they can hide behind an avatar. All big and bad, and cruel, and ignorant, devoid of empathy and respect, seemingly disconnected from whole chunks of their own species. Lot of good that big old brain does them. Normal?

I ate there last year. The food was mediocre at best. The service wasn't good. Could have been an off day, but it's not a convenient location either, and I haven't been back.

Btw, my take on Al's is that it offers probably the best food of any diner in JC. I can get a good variety of very good tasting meals for a decent price. The challenge is getting in and out without a hitch. Inside it's fine, but there are some socially uncooperative jerks who hang around outside.

One complaint: There is NO DINER in Jersey City that I know of that actually has real maple syrup. What's up with that? Charge me fifty cents extra, but please give me some maple syrup with my pancakes/waffles/etc.

There's an Ecuadoran fish restaurant on Tonnelle Ave. between Broadway and Newark. Ironically, it's right next to the (somewhat better, imo) Egyptian fish restaurant.

It's like the (6-letter) "f" word - so offensive and it was being used like "hey neighbor". dude. I had to ban it in my house. Really pissed people off.

I'm growing to feel the same about the "r" word. It's used so glibly, universally as an automatic negative, and it's making me sick.

I'm well aware that language is fluid. But I also think it's important to be aware of how we use language and sometimes, our understanding of meaning and impact dictate a rethink.

The underlying meaning of "retard" as an insult is what we can check here.

Yesterday, I walked north on Bergen, crossed Sip and had to navigate an icy, slushy sidewalk with no clear path on the east side of Bergen through to the fountain. Walking in the street is not a safe option there!

Sure. I also need all the money I can get. But, right now, this state is facing a fiscal crisis and state government either needs to (1) reduce expenditures or (2) increase revenue. Since Christie isn't going to raise taxes and increase revenue, he needs to reduce expenditures. One way to do this is to cut entitlements.

Think about it this way---would you be willing to let the state take more of your paycheck and transfer it directly to someone who isn't working? I sure wouldn't and, accordingly, am perfectly happy to see benefits cut.

Entitlement?! Unemployment INSURANCE. We pay premiums in case we lose employment. We lose employment. We take the payout. What entitlement?

Garden of Eden is low on my list. Their prices are worse than Whole Foods. In Hoboken, I can get Green and Black chocolate for 2/3 the price at one of the Mom and Pop health food shops. I'd rather go to Sobsey's and get locally grown specialty produce. For shelf goods Hoboken Farm Boy is much more affordable and they have a fresh juice bar, also priced fairly.

If this place delivered quality, fresh, local produce; bulk organic dry goods; organic animal products; and good specialty items at competitive prices, I will shop there.

I'm a food snob too.

The music can be loud, the service can be spotty, bar staff is usually snotty, but the food is fantastic.

I don't think it's that far above every other restaurant in town, but I send people there all the time, and I tell them, it's because of the food.

Btw, I go to cheap restaurants for the same reason. I can put up with a lot if the kitchen does their job right.

Well that makes her a DUMBA&& in my book. I am a woman by the way. Perhaps this guy has done this before...the cops should be informed.

Women blame (especially female) victims of sexual intimidation, violence, assault and rape at rates equal to or greater than men. It's off.

The OP was told what she did wrong, how she should have acted or reacted, and called "stupid" twice. Once it was YELLED at her.

It's possible to make constructive suggestions for future situations, but if you can't be sensitive, back off.

And btw, blaming the (female) victim of sexual assault or violation wasn't born in the United States. It is not some liberal construct. It is an ancient method for keeping women connected to one man. All over the world, today, women who are raped are punished for their "crime", sometimes with public execution.

If women feel vulnerable in society, it is what is left of being blamed and held responsible for their own violation. Help end it.

Anybody interested, join our FB group, Yes, I am a feminist. :)

I have to agree with JCFrankie. I hold most accountable city officials who allowed this to happen.

aoao, I'm not sure when, but it has been for a long time. What is today Jersey City used to be part of the Township of Bergen. The word "Bergen" comes from the Dutch "berg", in English "mountain". The highlands here have been referred to as the Bergen since the 1600s. Don't know when the Square part started, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was whenever the stockade came down. Again, not sure when but I would guess early in European settlement times.
