liberty ave runs all the way from one extreme of the heights (near secaucus) to the other (near the gas stations by rt 139). where exactly did this take place?

also, ask your neighbors if there was any contracting work being done. most crimes like this, while not inside jobs, are done by people who have spent time scouting out the area and know when you wouldn't be home.

Oh yeah... smelliest busses of all time. I think that the Central Avenue line was privately owned and up until 1980 ran a few old busses that were built in the 1950's.

With all of this nostalgia, let's not forget that some Jersey City's Puritan laws and overt racism. My family had a brick thrown through our front window because we were the first Latino family in our neighborhood. The police also pulled my father out of a car in front of our home and beat him during a cold winter day. Pretty tough for a four year old son to watch.

"Coloreds" weren't allowed in my neighborhood. I thought my first name was "hey spic" and I also had to sprint home from Sunday school so the Irish and Italian kids wouldn't kick my Puerto Rican butt after we said our seven Hail Marys.

There were also wonderful people in my neighborhood who defended my family against thugs, and were very supportive when my dad lost his job in the 1960's. Despite some of the problems, everyone was on the front stoop of their homes and there was a real sense of involvement in the community. There was always one community leader who got the city to provide a bus for a day trip to the shore or Lake Hopatcong.

Strangely, years later, some of those same Irish and Italian kids who chased me home from Sunday school happen to be good friends of mine.

yeah i was thinking of 'tops' and not 'topps'

Tops Appliance City reached $158 million in sales in 1985. In 1987 it ranked 13th nationwide among major appliance retailers. A second New Jersey store opened in Secaucus in December 1986 and a third in East Hanover in April 1988.

http://www.answers.com/topic/tops-appliance-city-inc

also, dont know if it was mentioned , but how about 'nobody beats the wiz' as an addition to the list?

awhile back, someone posted on here that they 'heard' that gangs were initiating that night and that people were going to get shot up/ stabbed in local high schools. rumors kept spreading and they shut down some schools early iirc. i think later it was found that all that was only rumors. if jenny questioned a story that originally had no firsthand evidence, it's not because she's cynical or crazy. she's simply posting from experience

And before someone questions my 34 murders estimate, I came up with that number by dividing the total amount of murders so far (24) by the amount of days so far this year (257) and then extrapolated based on that result (i.e. (24/257) * 365). Really scary.

I always avoid getting involved in the political sniping of JCList, but this is beyond that. Team Healy ran on a "record" of lowered crime and enhanced safety/security. What a joke!

if person X decides he has 'beef' with person Y, and sets up a plot to stab/shoot him when he's on his way to work / in the park / inside his house, how would policing prevent this?

^i guess the only solace is that there's not some psycho killer on the loose on wayne street (or if there is, he hasn't presented himself yet). it sounds instead like one guy out to get another specific guy, as opposed to random acts of violence, which will terrify young mothers to no end.

although, as was seen recently in newark (i think a week or 2 ago) where a young child was shot amidst crossfire between 2 parties, many times innocents do get hurt, even if they're not the targets.

are you talking about the area by the liquor store / salvation army? lmao, damn.. i dont know anyone who would call that up and coming. if i were you i'd probably move out of there too. although there's no need to go somewhere 'up and coming' or expensive like paulus hook. for example, journal square or parts of the heights can give you peace of mind

problem: bumpers getting scratched in tight parking spaces

solution: buy an SUV

problem solved

my personal favorite is when a-holes on my block try to 'reserve' a spot on the street by purposely taking up two spots. sometimes, they don't do a very good job of this, so they'll actually leave a big enough space for my small suv to fit. i dont particularly mind 'moving' the offending car behind me with my rear spare tire if thats what it takes for me to fit in the spot.

why should they feel embarrassed? a feeling of embarrassment implies that one is doing something incorrectly. what, besides the fact that 2 posters on here disagree, is incorrect about using a credit card to pay for a $1 purchase?

i went to vita med on Newark ave with Dr Majchrzak a few weeks ago. i needed a physical done asap and i just sorta went on a whim since they were the fastest place that took me. they're located on newark ave by the court house, and a few blocks away from the JSQ path station (prob like a 10 min walk or so).

their waiting room was modern, clean and large. staff was helpful, and the dr himself was very pleasant. he was very attentive and thorough. they also had a bunch of other doctors in the same place so if you needed a specialist, you didnt have to go far. the best part IMO was that they took my blood samples right there.. in the past, i would have had to go to a separate lab the next day.

hopefully i wont get sick and have to go back anytime soon ... but if i do, i think ive found my new primary doctor

i too visited 2520 JFK awhile back. the prices were low compared to downtown, but like xerxes pointed out, the maintenance seemed too high. the building itself is OLD (although the condos technically brand new - completely gutted). there is no doorman, and while the area immediately around the building is decent enough , a couple of blocks in either directions quickly changes things. i'll pass on this one
