Christie used Sandy funds for senior complex in town where mayor endorsed him

Matt Friedman/The Star-Ledger By Matt Friedman/The Star-Ledger

January 28, 2014

TRENTON ? Gov. Chris Christie helped channel $6 million in federal Hurricane Sandy recovery dollars to a project conceived years before the storm struck, in an Essex County town that was not particularly hard hit, records show.

The funding, pushed for personally by the Republican governor, was announced less than two weeks before the town?s Democratic mayor formally endorsed him for reelection.

The development is an $18 million senior center and housing complex in Belleville called Franklin Manor. One third of the cost ? $6 million ? is being paid for by a $1.8 billion pot of federally funded Community Development Block Grants to help the state recover from Sandy.

Congrats on your decision to get a dog! So exciting. The rescues everyone mentioned are great. If you want to expand your search, I got my small dog from a rescue in Westchester, called Pet Rescue (Larchmont, NY).

I really like it when the dogs are in foster homes, because the foster family knows the animal really well, and they see their behavior as it is in a home.

I also just wanted to say it may take you a while to find the right dog for you. Try not to get discouraged! The little dogs seem to more sought after in shelters and rescue orgs, so it can take some time and patience, especially if you're looking for a puppy. It took me about four months to find my guy,but we're perfect for each other and it was so worth the wait.

Good luck!

I recently found that I have several ancestors who lived (and died)in JC. Does anyone know of cemeteries in the city with pretty old graves? I'm looking for graves from around 1900.

People for Animals in Hillside offers low cost spay and neuter, and vaccines. It's about $90 for everything. Thanks for helping the kitties!

I really like the veggie platter at Ibby's. There's also the newish place Greene Chutney Grill, which is sort of like an Indian Chipotle, and has nice veg options. And of course little India...I like Sapthagiri a lot.

Wow. Just wow.

To the OP, I'm very sorry this happened to you. And by "this" I mean that you had this terrible encounter, and that people on here are being so ridiculous.

Nearly the identical thing happened to me with this man. Clearly there was nothing the OP (or I) did to provoke or "deserve" being accosted like this. The issue is with the perpetrator, not with the victim not being vigilant enough or whatever. Please enough already.

I pass by him probably 5-6 times a week. I would say once out of every 10 times he'll curse at me. I have seen him get aggressive on rare occasions - one time it was breaking liquor bottles in the middle of Columbus Ave. Another time someone put a dead cat on my car - I suspected it was him. Just a hunch from the stuff he'd been muttering at me that week and his proximity to where it happened. When I discovered it he was sitting maybe 10 feet away, could have been waiting for me so he could watch. But who knows.

I had a run in with this guy a few years ago. I walked by him on Newark Ave and He spit on me and screamed a lot of nasty things. Now I always cross the street when I see him.

Oy.

Did you see this article?

A Village With the Numbers, Not the Image, of the Poorest Place
Published: April 20, 2011

The poorest place in the United States is not a dusty Texas border town, a hollow in Appalachia, a remote Indian reservation or a blighted urban neighborhood. It has no slums or homeless people. No one who lives there is shabbily dressed or has to go hungry. Crime is virtually nonexistent.

And, yet, officially, at least, none of the nation?s 3,700 villages, towns or cities with more than 10,000 people has a higher proportion of its population living in poverty than Kiryas Joel, N.Y., a community of mostly garden apartments and town houses 50 miles northwest of New York City in suburban Orange County.

We live on the block and saw this last night. Seemed like two cars' worth of people fighting with each other at the stop light. Maybe one rear ended the other at the light, or they had had an altercation earlier. One guy in orange shorts went nuts with a 2x4, smashing the other car's windows. My husband saw a second guy with a similar object. Then the guys went away and came back with something else, possibly knives. Whatever it was it scared most of the people away, and the women kicked off their heels and booked it down the street. Someone was injured and taken away in an ambulence, and there is still some blood on the sidewalk.
We called the cops, as did other people. They arrested at least one of the men.
It was pretty intense, but I got the sense that the location was fairly incidental. I could be wrong though. Hopefully there will be more info in the JJ tomorrow.

The Balloon Boy promotes new heavy metal band...in Jersey City
#52
Home away from home
Home away from home

Anyone remember the Balloon Boy? Dad builds a balloon, and stages a hoax about his son floating away... The now 10 year old is fronting a kid heavy metal band. You know, one of those.

"A few minutes past noon on Monday of last week, outside an unfurnished three-bedroom house in Jersey City, the din of the Heene Boyz practicing carried out to the street. Muted by acoustics, their rehearsal sounded like a rolling garbage-can army. The rental property is the northern beachhead to launch the band on a slower road to fame, its American Chili Tour 2013, which is so far more of an aspiration than an itinerary. Richard, who'd let his hair grow since his days of tabloid infamy, greeted his visitors in flip-flops, shorts, and a grey tank top. The family dog, Zoomer, followed behind him. Mayumi, who was a guitarist back in Japan, wore a black Heene Boyz T-shirt."

Re: Questions for Great Dane owners
#53
Home away from home
Home away from home

I'm not a Dane owner but waned to chime in about the big dog thing...as others have said, many large or giant breeds are actually more suited to apartment life than many small breeds, like Jack Russells, as someone mentioned earlier. If you have enough space for this dog to walk around freely (ie not a 300 square foot studio probably) it will be content. When considering any dog, look at the energy level and choose one that matches your own. Do you want to bring your dog on a jog every day? A high energy working dog like a Weimaraner might be a great choice. If you're a couch potato, you and a Weimaraner will drive each other crazy. Training obviously is crucial.

Breed specific rescues are great...also there are many very chill senior dogs that need homes, which are available from rescues or from reputable breeders once they are retired from showing etc.

If you are looking for a sit down meal, we had our rehearsal dinner at Madame Claude and it was very reasonable. We had about 25 people. We took up the whole place, so we did it between lunch and dinner, I think at 4pm. Everyone had a great time.

For that size group, I would say many restaurants downtown could accomodate if you just want to do dinner, and for probably less money than you would think. If you want space for dancing too, it's a little trickier but certainly there are options. The roof deck at Skinners Loft comes to mind.

I not sure where you got 3.90 from. A plain croissant there is something like 2.75, which is comparable to places like Starbucks, and is worlds and worlds away.

I love the Loews. For those complaining that their programming doesn't attract enough people, I would ask in all seriousness if you've been to a screening recently. There are typically a couple hundred people, not a couple dozen.

That said there is a lot more that can be done with the place. More concerts would be great.

This happened to me when I was younger. I guess it's hard for some people to understand why someone wouldn't speak up. You really can't know how you will react until you are in the situation. I was groped by a creep on the subway, and was so filled with shame that I couldn't say a word.

I find it interesting that so many commenters are demanding to know why she didn't ask for help on the train or anything like that, when so many of you immediately questioned the truth of her claim. Would you ask for help from someone if you thought they would accuse you of lying?
