A Tuna Christmas - J CITY Theater
#31
Home away from home
Home away from home

Are you ready for some Tuna?
For the first time in 2 years
A TUNA CHRISTMAS returns to Jersey City!
Opening night: Wednesday - December 11th - 8pm

Back by popular demand, "A TUNA CHRISTMAS" is a marathon Christmas comedy of southern madness. The Christmas yard display contest is heating up in the small town of Tuna, Texas as neighbor fights neighbor for the most outrageous display of lights, Santas, Baby Jesus' and Rudolphs. This year however, there is a Christmas Phantom on the loose, spreading vandalism and havoc.

With quick-change zaniness and quicksilver one-liners, two incredibly talented actors introduce us to 22 of the wildest citizens in Tuna, Texas.

This year the wigs are bigger, the heels are higher and the skirts are shorter!

And we are thrilled to announce a new cast member: Stephen Hope! Last seen in J CITY's production of APARTMENT 3A, Stephen has risen to the high-heeled challenge of being one half of the crazy town of Tuna, Texas. Stephen brings a Broadway pedigree to the production, having been a member of the original cast of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT - as well as countless Off Broadway, regional and touring productions over his distinguished career.

J CITY Theater continues their "Come Back Season" with this wild holiday tradition. Our opening show: APARTMENT 3A, was the most successful show in our history and we are so excited to continue the momentum.

Full info:

It's the final week of performances for J CITY Theater's Apartment 3A.

This past weekend, we had sell out crowds and we truly apologize to those we had to turn away at the door. If only we could have squeezed some more chairs into the theater - we would have.

But fear not - starting this Wednesday, we have four performances left and some tickets are still available for each night. (However - Friday and Saturday typically sell out fast, so if you can make it on Wednesday or Thursday - that might be better!)

And remember - Thursday is our Two for Thirty Thursday deal - get your second ticket for half off!! Just enter the code: 24thirty online.

Jersey City, NJ (October 11, 2013) ? J CITY Theater, the professional theater company located in downtown Jersey City is proving that they?re ?Jersey strong? by staging their comeback production on October 11, 2013.? The show runs for three weeks with a scheduled closing of October 26th.
?
J CITY Theater will launch their eighth season by producing ?Apartment 3A,? written by actor and playwright Jeff Daniels, who is currently starring in HBO?s ?The Newsroom? written by Aaron Sorkin. The play is a sardonic romantic comedy that revolves around Annie Wilson, a public television employee who loses her faith in God, men and even PBS. It's a laugh out loud comedy with some adult themes - so parents might want to consider this rated PG - 13.?

Thanks JCListers - good to know I wasn't alone. (Well, actually I'm sorry that I wasn't alone or that any of us have to deal with this.) But like many of you - I don't worry when it's only an inch or so - so was pretty shocked when we got so wet on this one.

Just wanted to say what a treasure this place is. Sandy and I headed over there this weekend with friends and were once again blown away. Eddie and his staff have created a great menu with delicious food. This restaurant is his passion and the entire evening was a great experience. If you haven't gone - I recommend checking him out. We really need to support our local businesses!

While most of you know me as the producer of J CITY Theater, my day job is as a therapist. I am a private practitioner and I have an unusual approach - I walk with my clients instead of meeting in an office, usually meeting at Battery Park or Central Park. And, yes, I've been known to do quite a bit of kicking...

No non-sense. Goal directed. Plain speaking.

J CITY Theater: post hurricane update and info on A Tuna Christmas
#48
Home away from home
Home away from home

To the Fans and Supporters of J CITY Theater,

We?ve always known that Sandy Cockrell - our Artistic Director, was a hurricane of passion and energy, so when we heard that there was a real hurricane coming with the same name - we knew that it was going to be a force to be reckoned with. Little did we know.

We think of our audience members and supporters as family and never more so than in the past several weeks. Our hearts go out to all of you during this time and we truly hope that you are ok and are now moving through the recovery process from this devastating storm. And we will forever be grateful to so many of you who reached out to us with assistance and encouraging words during this time.

The good news is that the theater escaped with only minor damage. A little bleach and elbow grease and we will be back up and running.

The bad news is that Sandy and I received major damage to our home. We have spent the
last month working to restore power and recover from the damage of 8 feet of water and a minor fire. The time and effort that it has taken to deal with demo, renovation, FEMA and insurance companies has been all consuming.

We therefore have made the very difficult decision to cancel this year?s production of A Tuna Christmas. For the first time in 6 years, Petey, Vera, Dixie, Bertha, Charlene, Pearl, Inita, Helen and all the gang from Tuna, Texas will have to sit this one out. We worked very hard to see if we could bring them back - but in the end we simply did not have the time or funds.

We hope that giving them a year to rest - they will come back next year with even more power and lunacy.

On a different note - we would like to thank all of you that made Regrets Only our most successful show to date. We broke all attendance and box office records and we loved hearing from many of you who said this was your favorite show ever. We are going to build on that momentum as we plan for the Spring!

Again, thank you for all of your support. Remember that your year-end tax deductible gifts are always appreciated and allow us to come back from this temporary set back - to be better than ever. If you would like to make a donation you can donate online at www.jcity.org or mail a check (made out to The Field) to 6 Mercer Street, Jersey City, NJ 07302.

We will leave you with this parting thought from Petey Fisk of the Greater Tuna Humane Society:

Peace on Earth. Good will toward everybody. I never get tired of hearing that.

Having a difficult time estimating how high the water will get in downtown. We live near city hall - corner of Marin Blvd and Mercer. During Irene, we had 3 feet in the basement. What should we expect now?

Is this something where those on the "parlor" level of a brownstone should be concerned? We are on the first floor - but that's a good 5 feet above street level.

Thoughts?

We are a hit!

Last weekend's opening of our production of REGRETS ONLY was a huge success! Big audiences and REALLY big laughs. (In fact, I was a little concerned about some of you - I hope you didn't hurt yourselves.) Seriously, I think this biggest and longest laughs we've ever had in our seven year history came last weekend.

But it's not too late! The second week opens tonight and seats are still available!

Here is a facebook comment from one of our supporters:

Opening night was spectacular. Sandy and Clay continue to raise the bar and surpass it making each season more spectacular than the previous one. "Regrets Only" is topical, funny, wonderfully cast, thought provoking and a play not to be missed. Don't regret not going to see it for yourself!!!!

And check out our review from Summer Dawn Hortilosa at the Jersey City Independent. Using words like: Brilliant, Fabulous and Perfection - it made me blush a little bit. Here's the full link:

We are so proud of the positive response and look forward to seeing you there!
Remember - Thursdays are "Two for Thirty Thursdays" - meaning you can buy two tickets for a total of $30 instead of $20 each.

And the Hamilton Inn continues to offer the Dinner and a Show Package - save 10% off your entire bill on the night you see our production.

J CITY THEATER's production of REGRETS ONLY by Paul Rudnick
#57
Home away from home
Home away from home

J CITY Theater is thrilled to announce the opening of our 7th Season!

And to kick off Lucky Season 7 - we have chosen a show that will be sure to knock your socks off!

Timely? Check
Political? Double Check
Funny? Triple Check

On Friday, October 12th, we kick off the year with REGRETS ONLY, by award winning playwright Paul Rudnick. REGRETS ONLY is a political satire, an outlandish farce and a comedy of Park Avenue manners. Rudnick, known for his hilarious and delicious one line zingers, has written a piece that crackles with energy and shock. The night is ruled by wise cracking maids, glittering gowns, madcap mothers and opulent excess. But underneath all the sophistication and lunacy is a surprising story of kindness, friendship and learning to take a stand for what one believes.

It is the story of Tibby, an upper east side society maven and professional party goer, and her friendship with Hank - one of the world's leading fashion designers whose long term partner has recently died of cancer. Arriving for a glittering evening of charity events, Hank and Tibby learn that her husband, a successful attorney, has been asked by the President to draft a constitutional amendment against same sex marriage. The three friends are forced to explore the meaning of friendship, love, commitment and exactly what is marriage (gay or straight) all about! Ultimately Hank sets up a plot of revenge that nearly brings the world to a halt.

"Paul Rudnick is one of the funniest quip-meisters on the planet"
The New York Times

"Hilariously witty - Rudnick's script is ripe with jokes at the expense of the upper class"
Show Business Weekly

"A devastatingly accurate political and social satire."
BackStage

The cast includes Eric Purcell as Jack, Sandy Cockrell as Tibby, Marvin Bell as Hank, Angela Sharp as Spencer, Cammie West as Myra and Norrice Raymaker as the indomitable Marietta.

Also - in our lobby, Gallery 9 is very excited to present the couture creations of local fashion designer and artist Uta Brauser of "Fish with Braids"
