Mansour Partners is fantastic and they are conveniently located near Exchange Place. We have used them for years and anyone we refer to them always comes back to thank us for recommending them. Tim Mansour is the principal and is an all-around great person:

I also recommend Oh Honey, who produces honey locally from an apiary in The Heights of Jersey City. The product is OUTSTANDING. They are at local farmer's markets but I picked my jar up at Choc-O-Pain. Enjoy!

Last Spring I brought my six year-old to this shop to buy some Easter candy, and Mr. Fischer could not have been kinder. He even bestowed free little chocolate bunnies upon us. I was impressed with many of the products he sold and he took the time to explain where he sourced raw ingredients from and why it made a difference in the quality of the end-product.
A kind and gentle man, indeed. May he rest in peace. Truly a loss for Jersey City.

This weekend are the final four performances of "The Brave Little tailor and Other Magical Myths" by Jersey City Children's Theater. The shows are Saturday (today) and Sunday at 2:00PM and 4:30PM each day. We attended last weekend and, as always, our little one loved the show. This local theater company is a true gem for our community and definitely worthy of our support. More info below from my previous post last weekend...

Mansour Partners is a TERRIFIC firm. Tim Mansour, the owner, is not only a brilliant advisor, he's also a really good person (which, in my past experiences, is an unusual combination). The office is a block from Exchange Place. Here's the link to the website:

Sad to see this go. Was a bit pricey for my pocketbook but the product was of very high-quality. Something tells me they are not going out of business, I think they may have decided not to have their own brick and mortar store but instead focus on the production end of the business and distribute their product in other retailers' locations.

As always, I highly recommend checking out one of the performances of "The Brave Little Tailor and Other Magical Myths" being staged at the Barrow Mansion this weekend and next weekend by Jersey City Children's Theater. This organization does terrific work not only in Downtown JC, but in JC's other wards as well, and is definitely worthy of the community's ongoing support. The shows are simply terrific.
Two of this weekend's shows have already sold out, but there are still tickets available for this weekend's other two performances and next weekend's four performances.

Our neighbors just had their existing deck replaced by Poltmax Contractors. They did a beautiful job and now we are going to have them replace our deck next spring. One of the partners is a structural engineer (who will draft plans) and that's who you need on a job like this, not an architect. Call Ziggie Zdizslaw, one of the other partners, at (570) 242-3083 to have him stop by and give you an estimate. Good luck!

If my memory serves me, there were some food stalls and some tables set up with handcrafted items from Bolivia for sale. I have been a fan of this parade since my family and I happened upon it while walking back from grabbing a cup of coffee one Saturday about four years ago. It is truly spectacular, the music, the costumes, everything. It's also wonderful for children to see a celebration of Bolivian culture. Our little one was dancing the entire time. I highly recommend this event!

We had our chimney relined by A-1 Affordable Construction -- our neighbor used them first for the same project and was very satisfied with the work and the price (not cheap but not outrageously expensive either). We had ours relined in spring of 2012 and haven't had any problems. We in turn recommended this contractor to another neighbor who had their chimney relined last summer and they were also very satisfied with their work. The number is: 201-703-5644. Good luck.

From what I understand, at least for now Mana will only be open to the public during these one-day exhibition events. You can also have a tour of the facility if you make an appointment. To be sure I always know what they have coming up I joined Mana's mailing list -- you can sign up for it in the top right-hand corner of this page:

This is the second event at Mana that we've attended and I must say I continue to be impressed. We enjoyed a modern dance performance by Shen Wei Dance Arts in one of the bigger gallery spaces, a live piano performance with incredible large-scale animation in another gallery (which our 5-year old LOVED) and saw some very interesting artwork in all types of media as we made our way through some of the artists' studios. It was terrific to be able to chat with the artists in their studios as well. If you haven't been here before I highly recommend it. It is an amazing addition to the JSQ area -- we rode the PATH over -- it affords such a rich opportunity to enjoy art in so many forms, and it's free!

Good riddance to bad rubbish. This place was a dump. I invited some friends to meet me there once after work (before having been there myself, BIG mistake) and was totally embarrassed that I had suggested it.
It's a shame that a place with such a prime location can't seem to be managed by people who know what they are doing. Under the right leadership, this place could be a gold mine.

This is going to be an AMAZING addition to JC. Whenever I have a morning meeting in Hoboken, I stop into the Choc-O-Pain on 1st St there. The bakery does incredible pasteries (sweet and savory), coffee/tea, breads, sandwiches, quiches, croque monsieurs and soups, all made with fresh ingredients. They also do fun things like king cake for Fat Tuesday. It 's not inexpensive but it's not overpriced IMHO. Another important thing: the French woman who owns it really knows how to run a business. There is always a line of customers, but it moves very quickly due to the well trained and very friendly staff she has in place. Bienvenue a JC Choc-O-Pain y Bon Chance!

FOX NEWS TONIGHT:Jersey Shore Coming to Jersey City

Just can't stay away

A Fox News camera crew was posted outside City Hall around 5:00PM this evening. I thought they were here to cover a City Council meeting, but no, they are here to get JC residents' reactions to the announcement that Jersey Shore will be filming its next season here in JC, using the fire house on Mercer St (next to Marco&Pepe) as their home base.

Hoboken said "no" apparently, but, of course, our City government is approving permits for the shooting to happen, supposedly starting next week (according to Fox news person).

Ugh.

I'll never understand why there is never a line in this place when I go in. The food is amazing, you can't beat the prices and the owner makes you feel like you are part of her family.
Just showing this place some love today (BTW, Wednesday is blintz day at Sava Polish Restaurant -- having some right now - YUM - and will have some of her wonderful chicken soup for dinner).

We live very close to VVP and a very large red tailed hawk has made our backyard a new hunting ground.
We've had a birdfeeder back there for years and have enjoyed seeing an amazing variety of birds as they migrate through JC (until now -- I think he's scared them off).

Three weeks ago we saw this giant hawk hopping around on the ground and flying from tree to tree; we then spotted him flying away with a small black bird in his talons. I was quite surprised to see such a large hawk hunt a small bird but I guess he was very hungry that day.

Have seen him almost every other day since then. He hangs out on our deck railing a lot and I am certain that he is a red tailed hawk. We have stopped filling the bird feeder in the hopes that he will move on...we don't wan't to find any sliced up birdies out back!

Yaga's (the owner's) chicken meatballs are crazy good. If you haven't already tried them, have some with rice or kasha and vegetables and you will be hooked (all for a very reasonable price too)! She is the Polish grandmother I never had!

These places are constantly empty.

Newark Ave and it's businesses are not being used by the local residents. It's a breeding ground for the homeless, the drunk, and the beggers. Why? Because nobody gives a sh*t.

How is Newark Ave going to be fixed up?

It will help if we can get the current administration at City Hall voted out (fingers crossed that Steve Fulop will win the next mayoral election). But the only way this will happen is if people, especially in downtown, register to vote and then actually VOTE.
Even though it does absolutely nothing to help them, City Hall knows it can rely on the fact that there will always be small business entrepreneurs who are willing to try a venture in downtown JC (despite the expense and frustration of doing so). It seems like City Hall could care less if these new ventures succeed; logic would dictate that City Hall would fall all over itself to ensure that such businesses thrive on their watch. But the level of corruption in our fine state protects City Halls' jobs (and therefore supports JC's lack of progress). The only way for change to really occur is to vote them out.

Speaking from experience, staying alert to what's around you is so much easier said than done, especially on your way home from work when a thousand things are flying through your mind.

I hate to say it, but from a thief's POV, it probably makes sense to go after people on their way home as they are distracted and probably have a "it can't happen to me at this time of day" attitude.

One thing that continues to shock me: I see women wearing their earbuds while walking down streets such as Mercer after dark all the time. Ladies, PLEASE TAKE THE EARBUDS OUT -- don't make yourselves easy targets!!!!

Thanks for posting, I was walking my dog here right around that time today as I do every day, but didn't see anything. I understand you don't have many details, but could you possibly clarify a bit-- you mention the girl was robbed right past M&P on Mercer (presumably between Grove and Barrow on the right side of the street?)-- the assailant came from "underneath the trees"-- I am trying to figure out exactly where this is, as there aren't really any cluster of trees on the block (the lone tree in front of the first brick townhouse apartments ?). This block is heavily trafficked, especially during rush hour home, so I am wondering where they could have been waiting. I have always felt 100% safe on this block, but now I am concerned, please share any more info if anyone has it.

Me again. I do not have any more details than those I posted earlier. But to clarify the location: it occurred on the north side (the M&P side) of Mercer Street, in front of the large red brick apartment building right near M&P -- there is a tree or two nearby, and this is the approximate spot where the victim was approached. I did not try to speak to her as she was understandably upset (and was making her report to the police by the time I was passing by). If I can get any other info I will be sure to post it.
