Re: Barack Obama for President

Does anyone know if the election results were released for Jersey City, and if so, where? I see on CNN.com that Obama won about 73% of the Hudson County vote, but I haven't seen it broken down by city anywhere, unless I'm missing something. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Yeah, I know. I have WaMu. I'm just wondering if they're going to close down or turn into Chase.

Looks like Washington Mutual has become the lastest casualty of this financial mess. Anyone know the fate of the downtown JC branches? According to the NY Times, Chase is shutting down 10% of WaMu's branches (mostly in the New York & Chicago markets).

Are there any Chase branches downtown? I haven't noticed any, not that I've been looking. I know there's tons in the city.

Is ESPN-U different than the ESPN college Game Plan? Because the latter sports package can be had on Comcast.

Yeah, it's different. ESPN & Comcast still haven't reached an agreement, so games shown on ESPN U are not available on Comcast at all.

Does anyone know if Verizon DSL internet is actually available in downtown Jersey City? We're trying to get it connected but have been having problems. I'm not sure if it's that our building hasn't been wired correctly or if it's not available in the neighborhood yet at all? Their customer service people have been useless.

Are Comcast or Verizon the only options for internet around here? :(

Thanks for any tips.

We had a problem getting DSL. I think it was because we didn't have a verizon phone line installed at the time. They claimed we could use a "dry loop" without having a local/long-distance service and still get DSL, but it never worked out. They sent a guy out to check on it, but he never showed up, I got frustrated, and just went with comcast.

Verizon DSL is available in the area though. You can check here: http://www22.verizon.com/content/ConsumerDSL

Thanks for sharing - I think I'm in the same situation. I wish I could get a straight answer out of them. Looks like I may be stuck with Comcast - bleh! Thinking I'll give Verizon another week to get their act together...

My roommate has Comcast internet in her name. Since she's moving out, we are canceling the account & getting a new account in someone else's name.

When I checked the Comcast website today, the installation fee for High-Speed internet was $150.

My question is: Are they serious?? I don't remember ever paying more than $20 for installation. Has anyone subsribed to their internet recently? Is this a typo??

I think there's another thread on here about this, but I recomend Mannasquan. I think it's about 1.5 hours, maybe a little less? It's right next to Point Pleasant. Very quiet & pretty clean, no big boardwalk or bar scene. I forget how much the fee is to go on, but I think they're all similiar in cost.

This is true. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the VVP woman works full-time somewhere and has just been having a bad few months. I'm not sure if she's actually in the park during working hours (I see her during my commute both-ways & at night). I'm so nosy.

I've been wondering about the VVP lady as well. I see her every single day! She seems relatively normal, but always in kind of a daze (and the fact that she lives in the park).

I think some people in the neighborhood have been helping her out - I've seen her entering an apartment on Barrow (with a key) and also being let inside the church on the corner of Jersey & Bright. I am very interested in her story!

What about the (I believe, latina?) young woman who walks around talking to herself and (usually) pushing a shopping cart? I've seen her camped out on Barrow St. (near where those other homeless guys hang out) and also randomly on Newark Ave. towards Grove.

Funny you should ask, but I just had the pleasure of cancelling my land line service with Verizon last week -- which I had ONLY for Tivo. I didn't have cable at my old place. I had bare bones minimum land line service, but with all the taxes and other nonsense FCC line charges, it was over $30 a month.

In my new place, we have cable (with wireless) and only use cell phones for phonecalls. We just hooked up my Series 2 (with Lifetime subscription) using the Tivo wireless adapter and it works great -- purchased the Tivo wireless adapter at Amazon.com for $39.99. I suggest getting the Tivo adapter to avoid problems with incompatible adapters.

Before connecting wirelessly, it was hooked up to the cable modem, so you can definitely do it through cable.....as long as it's not a Series 1, as Scottacus said. There might be an issue with early model Series 2, as well, so do check. Mine was a late model Series 2 purchased in Nov 2004.

Hope it helps.

Thanks, that was actually really helpful! Did you have the $10/month Verizon plan that ended up costing $30 with fees? That's annoying!

I'm having my boyfriend look into which model he has. He thinks it's a series 2. He got it in May or June of 2006. I will look into the Tivo wireless adaptor from Amazon - hopefully that will work with the model he has.

Thanks!

Tivo / Phone Service
#45
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

My boyfriend is moving to JC in several weeks, and he has a Tivo, that gets updated (I believe daily) through a land phone line. I'm used to living with just a cell phone, & I would like to avoid getting a land line if possible.

Questions:

1. Does anyone know if it's possible to have a Tivo without a land phone line? Is there anyway to run Tivo through, say, our cable modem?

2. Does anyone know which company offers the cheapest, bare-minimum, land line phone service to downtown JC? Any bad experiences or companies to avoid? This phone line would be rarely used (basically only Tivo & food delivery that requests local number). Most phone calls (esp. long distance) would be made through our cell phones.

Any suggestions? Getting a DVR through Comcast is not an option. I don't want to give any more money than necessary to them, & my boyfriend doesn't pay a monthly fee for his Tivo (he's had it since back when they offered service for life).

THANKS!

B. Dalton is owned by Barnes & Nobles so maybe they will upscale and enlarge soon. They really need to make it an anchor store - I still think it would be best placed where the first floor of parking exists now -- it will help integrate the Mall to Downtown.

That is a good idea - not sure if it's ready for a full B&N just yet. :)

As of now, best places for books are B&N in Hoboken, somewhere in the city (I go to Borders on B'Way near Wall St.), or Amazon.com. ;) B.Dalton's in the mall is the best place downtown, but is still very limited.

I'm more excited about this place opening than any other place in the neighborhood! Living on Jersey & York, it was such a pain to have to trek to the Pathmark for late night milk or juice.

So far I've tried a chicken salad sandwich & a coffee - both were decent & very inexpensive. The guy working there was super-friendly (not sure if it was the owner or not?).

I hope it stays nice & clean & doesn't turn into another A-1 Deli.

I get Stella's pizza (by the slice) once every month or so, since it's on my way home from work. It's never been really good, but it's never been awful either. Much better than Esperanto's or Helen's. I've also tried their chicken parm sub & cheese calzone, both are also alright. Nothin' special.

If anyone works in downtown NY, "Little Italy Pizza," on Park Pl. between Church & B'way (almost directly across from the WTC PATH), is delicious (but pricey). This is my usual "go to" pizza place when I want a slice on my way home.

If I don't realize I want pizza until I'm already on the PATH - I'll get Stella's. :)

This is a pretty cool idea!

I'm "almost-run-over" pretty regularly in this neighborhood. Much more so than in the city. Just last week I was crossing Montgomery St. at Barrow St. (with the walk sign) and was nearly hit by a Dominos delivery car making a left from Barrow onto Montgomery.

It will probably take someone actually getting run over and suing the city before anything like this would ever be implemented.

JC Parking Authority Ticket
#54
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

My boyfriend got a permit last week to park his car in one of the JCPA municipal lots (the one downtown on Newark Ave. by the BoA). He had his car parked there last Wednesday night with his permit correctly displayed on his back windshield. Thursday morning he noticed he had received a ticket.

He called the parking authority numerous times & ended up taking a half day today go and to talk to them in person. They gave him something in writing saying that the ticket was issued in error (THEIR error).

However, they STILL want him to go to court (Aug. 8th) to get the ticket cleared. This will require him taking off another half day, which he can't really afford to do. It doesn't seem right that he should have to go to court, because they arbitrarily wrote him a ticket. How often is this going to happen?

Is there any way he can get out of the court appearance? Has anyone here ever got a permit for the municipal lot? It's okay if this is a one time thing, but he doesn't have time for it to be a normal occurence.

Are there any other inexpensive off-street parking options downtown or in Journal Square? Or does anyone know of a private space available for rent in someone's driveway? This lot is SO much cheaper than the private lots, and I'm thinking I know why.

Just wanted to make sure everyone was aware of this & any tips would be appreciated!!

I'd like to add that this is one of my favorite places to stop in for a drink & appetizer.

I've been by for dinner (one time) and brunch (one time) and both times the food was really good, but a little pricey. I had the duck ravioli for dinner (I think this is actually an appetizer) & I've also tried the crepes. Both were decent.

I love stopping by on a weekend afternoon to watch part of the game at the downstairs bar with a beer or wine. They also have some sort of "bar menu" that has a delicious grilled cheese sandwich.

The staff (bartenders, waiters, etc.) is always helpful & friendly.

I do know that monthly parking there is 160/month and there is a wait list (approximately 6 months). My boyfriend has asked the gentlemen who collect money at the parking garage about where to go to get on the wait list, but so far hasn't gotten a coherent response. No one answers the number for the garage when he has tried calling. He can't locate an office inside the PATH station and the Port Authority Police there were no help when he asked them for advice.

Sketchy! :)

I will update this if I'm able to find out anything else.

Unfortunately, I was there at 9 this morning.

It's a nightmare. It took nearly 20 minutes for me to get from the new exit to the front of the Hilton Hotel/Century 21 (where the old exit was) - so basically, an additional 20 minutes was added on to my commute this morning. I don't think I've ever seen so many people - people were taking pictures of the crowd with their cell phones. Obviously they put no thought into crowd control - hopefully the situation improves. Tomorrow I will be giving myself an extra half hour to get to work.
