Brewster, it has been ages since I did any chemistry, but I thought corn maltodextrin is a glucose (a polysaccharide, a starch), not a glutamate (an amino acid). The first is an energy source, the second has more to do with neuro-transmission.

I've done some reading around just now, and there seems to be some woo woo talk about how "maltodextrose is MSG" but elsewhere I've read that this is a misconception. Can you add some clarity here?

It has a few more ingredients than I would like, but not horrible.

TJ's does an awful lot of work putting together their packaged foods. It is what they do best--offer a healthier, better-tasting alternative. I am addicted to their masala burgers. I am going to try making my own, though, as I've made the trip twice recently only to have them not be in stock.

C-Town's operating procedure for its locations seems to me to be:

(1) Open a location in a somewhat sketchy neighborhood other supermarket chains won't serve.

(2) Buy cheap and nearly spoiled inventory.

(3) Sell inventory at prices that are ridiculously high considering (a) the income level of the locals and (b) the fact that it is cheap and nearly spoiled.

I have lived near three C-Towns in my life, and they all seem to share the same business plan. I would travel further to get to, say, a D'Agostino or A&P only to find out that the quality was better and the prices were lower.

I am hoping Key Foods improves on that plan.

Stouffer's!!!

I know this isn't going to endear me to a lot of folks, but the constant refrain of "we should follow Brooklyn's lead" from folks in this town blows. The folks who think that aren't going to "develop our own special part of the Metropolis" they are just going to create a slightly different Brooklyn.

Just do your own shit and get on with it.

Your "JC wins all day long" really has very little to do with JC itself--it seems it is just a convenient place to be close to NYC. You could say Hoboken, or Bayonne.

I lived in Rochester for five years. I've lived here for 20. I like living here, but compared to Rochester, the city itself is a cultural wasteland. There is a reason why, on JC school field trips, my kids always have to go . . . some place else--either NYC or Newark.

That's all.

I would love to see more music at Loew's. Yo La Tengo, Beck, a few other bands, not to mention some musical theater groups have played there, but it is the exception, not the rule. The bands usually sell out. It would be great to have more. And for me, it doesn't have to be world class, even just some local bands would be fine. Just a start, just get it going.

This is their mission statement: http://www.loewsjersey.org/alt/index. ... w=article&id=22&Itemid=45

But all they have on their schedule is movies. I love movies, but they could do so much more.

BAM is a whole other league. I was there just a couple weeks ago, packed, $70 a ticket.

I don't think anyone is saying JC residents don't have access to culture. But the comparison was city to city, not city to surrounding area. Sure, we can hop on a train to the Met, or MoMA, or Carnegie Hall, but in that case we can just hop on a train to Trader Joe's so the thread should be over by that logic. Plus, it still is a pretty long commute for some.

Within city limits, Rochester still kicks JC's ass culturally just about every day of the week, except for maybe global cuisine.

Support of the arts in this city has been pathetic. Other municipalities of similar size seem to be able to develop and support culture, not just patronize it for votes.

That may be fine for you, if you are just a consumer (and can deal with the long commute). But what if you want to be more a participant?

Let's talk about music. What if you are in a band that wants to play out? What if you want to meet local musicians to partner with? What if you want to get local institutions to partner with your schools as part of a program of appreciation and development of talent? Having to cross the river to get any of that is a barrier, and once you are there, you are competing against the local residents.

God bless the child that's got his own.

I don't know what part of NYC is five minutes away from JC. Whether you walk to the PATH or drive in, NYC destinations add at least an hour to whatever you are doing, round trip.

Besides, your attitude is consigning JC to being basically a bedroom community. Why have music, museums, restaurants, etc., when they're all in Manhattan? Why even worry about jobs? Or schools? It's all a train ride away!

Compare JC to Newark. Newark is only slightly bigger, and yet is has a fantastic museum, a performing arts center, and sports teams. (Sure, the Newark Bears are sort of a joke, the Nets just left, and the Red Bulls actually are in Harrison, but at least there is an effort.)

Even though we lost our museum, JC still has a pretty good visual arts community, but it was something that was built over many years. It would be good if more could be done for the performing arts. Do we even have any decent performing arts spaces? The Loews? NJCU?

Rochester has a good music scene (Eastman School of Music, jazz, and blues festivals). It has some good museums. In these respects, it kicks JC's ass.

It has great parks. It has a lot of good restaurants. It has colleges and universities.

It is a little quaint--it is has more of a midwestern culture than an east coast culture--but, if you have a job, it is a great place to live and raise a family.

Great ideas. It has been a while since my kids were toddlers, but for me, Liberty Science Center was a waste of $$$ on anyone under 5.

Does the OP have a car? Just over the Bayonne Bridge in Staten Island is the Staten Island Children's Museum.

http://statenislandkids.org/

There is also a nice children's zoo in Staten Island, with an awesome reptile collection.

Several of the city parks have water features that are turned on in the summer.

My kids loved train rides. A light rail trip is a fun way to spend an hour or so. Also, they don't charge for kids that age on the ferries, so you could take a ferry to Manhattan.

And yes, I would definitely check out the JC Reservoir schedule.

He mentioned he?d only previously found it in a few choice locations in New York City.

Mocco and Argento have worked on projects together for a dozen years.

Not surprisingly, Old Bridge's crime rate is pretty low:

Double pension sounds like the angle. That our lovely mayor can't even consider any sort of search for the position is pretty sad. That he comes up with Comey as the right man for the job is an indicator of his increasing political isolation.

This is the funny part:

Quote:
IMPORTANT NOTE: A current New Jersey Digital Driver License is not an acceptable proof of identity under REAL ID.

If you don't have a REAL ID approved driver license, you need to get one; but the only form of driver license they accept for that process is the REAL ID type. Can anyone say Catch-22?

The only more stringent requirements I see are that an NJ license is not accepted as a form of ID in the process, AND you need to provide proof of your SS number. Otherwise, it is the same burdensome process as before.

Oh, and they have been the MVC for years now, no longer the DMV. All part of the "we are not that bureaucratic, useless organization that disappeared when we were privatized" makeover. In their defense, they are much better than they were ten years ago, but still, this is just so amusing. I think the process for getting a passport is easier.

Does he sound very silly & pretentious? Of course he does! Does he ruffle this native NYC/NJ boy's feathers? Nah. If he and his buddies can pay $5400 per month good for them. He's living his 'dream' right now, working hard, out on Saturday nights wearing his tight designer jeans and his best Banana Republican untucked dress shirt picking up the ladies. Give the youngin' a break! He has arrived - he be livin' in da big city. Let him have his excitement and try not to be too harsh. He has no idea how good it is here in the JC.

Oh, no doubt. I can remember thinking like him, but mindsets change.

I liken it to the housing struggle in college--early on, the drive among freshman to have "on campus" housing is strong, and is fostered by universities; later on, upper-classmen realize they wouldn't be missing much, and in fact might have a better life in off campus apartments.

For years while talking to NYC residents I've often referred to JC as the "gateway to the rest of the country."

I found the following details interesting:

? Other than the dog dying in JC, all the events took place in Hoboken. The dog ran away to Jersey City, instead of going home!

? The article calls the place "Doggie Daycare," and it seems to be part of the business name, but obviously, if the dog escaped on Friday, and the business owner called on Monday, and apparently the dog owners took no action, the dog was being kenneled there.

? The dog had no tags. Why is that? Really, tag your dogs, owners, especially if you are going to kennel them.

? Apparently, you have to pay to put your posters at the bulletin board at the A&P.

There is probably a lot more to this story than what was written.
