Great Just what we need...another sneaker store. And, who are the people that missed this guy's store in the first place. I've been here for 10 years, never heard of him or his store. There's already 2 or 3 on the avenue...and they are literally ghost towns because the merch is priced way too high...in one of them...I found a lot of gray market items to boot...so who is "excited" about this anyway.

Who else has no water in Jersey City Heights?

No water here in the heights around Lincoln and Bowers Streets. Is this what we can look forward to with the inept JC council's plan to have other companies run their systems through while the water is shut off for most of the city?

Anyone else experiencing lack of water...like NO water at all?

New Journal Sq. Path Station Deli - Avoid

I was pleased that the long-in-coming new Deli/Bagel shop in the Journal Square Path Station Concourse level was finally open...so decided to try it last night.

This place is staffed and owned by blithering idiots.

They had dozens of paper signs on their storefront advertising "specials". I went with the Chicken cutlet sandwich with fries and a soda for $3.99.

When I requested it, I was repeatedly asked what's a chicken cutlet? Finally, what appeared to be the store owner said 'ok, ok...I will make'. I said 'It's on the sign in your window...do you not make it or even have it?'

'No problem, no problem.'

Then, this idiot put a small of bag of potato chips on the counter for me. I said 'Where's the fries?' He said 'No fries'.

Then he took a frozen cutlet out of a freezer, and proceeded to put in an hot oil basket.

I told him I thought he was nuts...and said not only can you not cook, you advertise something you don't even have.

He said, "I give you a free soda" I said 'What the hell are you talking about? It's on the sandwich special sign advertised on the door."

I won't be coming back here.

Finding an apartment assistance needed

A friend is looking for a place in the Heights. We have been walking up and down streets, taking notes (phone numbers, etc.), and have looked on craigslist too (must be a slow season...not much out there). She is looking for a studio, or 1-bedroom apt.

Any ideas where else we can check? Online sources would be helpful too...we are trying to avoid going to a realtor.

Thanks!

Re: Dentist Recommendation

Two dentists that I DO NOT recommend are

1) The Baines Quacks at 386 Central Ave. I went in in '05 with a toothache and one of the Baines' bros. said I needed a root canal. I went back two days for my treatment and another Baines brother said I needed just a filling. Half way through the job he said he had an emergency and would finish the next day. The next day he did a so-so job in finishing the tooth filling. Whichever Baines brother (there are some sons and a father [or at least were] working there at the time said because of a wedding he had to leave early that day. Yeesh! I walked out while waiting for another x-ray.

2) Cynthia Leung in Hoboken. I went to her in '05/'06 because I read good things on the Internet. She was OK, a little rough and painful...but not horrible. Last October I was experiencing severe tooth pain and made several attempts at what I thought was a simple thing: to make an appointment. I would get someone on the phone who told me it was so busy they would call me back with the information for an appointment. Never did. Next day...same thing. Third time was the charm...they said my appointment could be for six weeks from that day...Eventually, I found another dentist - Exchange Dental Group in Wall St. area, where I work & hey, they even have Sunday hours.

Oh yeah, Dr. Leung's ass't or whoever called around the time of my scheduled app't and bumped it to mid-January claiming it was due to her busy schedule. I did not 'entertain the thought' of calling to laugh in the ears on the phone.

Re: An Open Letter to You, My PATH Nemesis

...and here's one from just this morning. The Journal Square Path station was unusually crowded around 8:15 this morning (yes, more crowded than usual)...and as I stood on the escalator this large (yes, big) woman [for the record, I'm 6 4 and large too] started banging her very large (yes, very large) two satchels into me.

I ignored it...after all...how long is the ride to the platform...

Well, when I stepped off to wait for the train to Wall St. she came right up to me and said "Why in such a hurry" "Did you really need to be somewhere so fast"

So, I ignored her...then she came into my face with more bs. Finally, I said "what the hell is your problem?" you were the one banging your bags into me...not a big enough lunch for you? With that, she skulked away.

While we are on the topic...anyone else ever wonder why so many East Indians lug around these huge backpacks and then jam them into everyone's back w/o so much as a "sorry" or "excuse me"... On several occasions I've had to say "carry your stuff in your hand like everyone else, the train is too crowded to be jamming into people with that stuff"...

...and...

Is it a cultural thing or genetics...but deodorant is not in their vocabulary either...Damn, some hot, humid Summer days going back & forth to work and whew! Yeah, throw them stinky arms over the bars and give everybody a whiff...

I saw a fight start over that once. Hot day, hot night. Some lady started in about the stink abuse and the man got abusive. Finally she whipped out a perfume bottle and splashed him..."Got the message!" she yelled. Everyone laughed. I felt it was a bit sad...so genetic...or just plain stupid.

Re: Ideas to discourage gang activity?

George Romeo said it best...and ever so eloquently..."Shoot 'em in the head".

It kills all brain activity and stops the nonsense. You don't like it? Face reality. We must all pack guns and shoot 'em all in the head. If the police don't protect us, we must protect ourselves. And, don't get all namby pamby on my ass! The facts are there are barely educated teens, pre-teens, and post teens causing havoc on the streets...answer...buy a gun and shoot 'em in the head! Nuff said!

For the two ladies looking for a two-bedroom apt... Where on craigslist are you looking? There are Jersey Heights apts. all over the place there...and some cheaper then $1300.00.

In fact in my neighborhood alone, there are signs for 'for rent' apts. all over the place. The heights is like every major city inner borough area...check out your neighborhood or prospective streets before plunking down the cash...

The area where you inquired has been well documented on this site for the occasional robberies, assaults, etc. so I suggest checking out the downtown or heights areas.

By the way, just so everybody knows where I'm at with this...I do NOT love the heights...a little noisy for my tastes, and try to tell people to stay away from anything west of Central ave. (NY ave, Webster ave...for most of its' stretch...), but there IS a real neighborhood feel here, plenty of cheap eats (but do NOT go anywhere near the inexplicably overrated Mexican Glory of Mexico place on Congress! -- worst service ever, food only ok, no ac - ugh!)...but my rent is cheap (less than $1000.00 for a 2-bedroom apt. and ...I am near Bowers and JFK, so the block is not too bad.

My best advice to two single women sharing an apt around here is...keep in mind that...after midnight that it is tough travelling w/o a car...the path runs sluggish, slow, and usually off schedule, and you will have to take a cab from the Journal Square station...And, NJ Transit buses run at 11:30, 12, 12:35 and that's it...until the next morning...

Best to your search

Jersey City Loews needs our help! An open letter to our Mayor!
#40

Quite a regular

Firstly, I am in no way associated with the Friends of the Loews or the movie theater. I've just been living here for a few years and like movies.

As well, I know I myself have been kinda' hard on these people sometimes because they don't respond to emails or telephone messages, and their choice of films does kind of leave one wanting...BUT I was tooling around the web today and found this new post on their web site:

"Recently, the City has taken the position that the lease which was executed between it and Friends of the Loew?s on October 15, 2004, is not valid, that the ordinance which approved the lease should be rescinded, and that the property should be conveyed to the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency.

It is our position that the lease was approved by the City Council, signed by the proper City officials, and is valid and binding on the parties. We have retained counsel to try to resolve the matter with the City, on a consensual basis if possible, or by litigation, if necessary. We will keep you informed on this site as the case develops."

Mayor Healey, do you really think that this is a wise move? Come on, think about your position. You were voted in by the people, and not rich developers who DO NOT live in Jersey City. These people, the Friends of the Loews, were handed a lease. If you recall (and I BET YOU DO NOT) that one of the platforms that you ran on and which led to MY VOTING FOR YOU included your strong statements to KEEP the Jersey City Loews and to help and assist FRIENDS OF THE LOEWS in this process.

Yeah, I can't wait until we vote your ass out. By the time you are finished with Jersey City it will be a developers paradise and a nightmare for everyone else, infested with high crime and anyone who gave a damn will have moved away.

If you value your constituents, and those who voted for you, do something about this, now.

Re: Fulop Calls for Resignation of Police Chief Robert Troy

How about seeking the resignation of the mayor! I voted for this guy and he is one big joke. Since moving from New York City in 2003 I have seen crime on the rise, a seemingly halt to any kind of warmth extended to make people move here from outside the area, weird 'special interest group things' happening like: a ridiculous call to hava a super food store built in my neighborhood when the company that runs it currently cannot keep hoods from stealing the shopping carts that they are supposed to be supplying shoppers with [good luck going to Stop n' Squeal on Central midday, they'll tell you all their carts are in use, even when there's only 10 people in the store. Several times a year, gangs have been stealing their carts and they don't replace them--for months how are they going keep people supplied adequately with carts to hold their suppies with a larger store that is so far away from the center of town in bad weather, the elderley will never make it there (especially with the new NON-bus service)?], what else? How about the seemingly endless school construction projects, one after the other, that go on for years...[they tore down a landmark bldg on Kennedy a year or so for yet another school...duh? look around, there ain't too many school-aged children on the streets, what we need are jobs for the teenagers], and man, it gets better...it used to be that a yellow taxi cab ride from Journal Sq to my house cost $3, now they jam as many people in a cab as possible, and some of these people you NOT want to even sit near in the same subway car with, and the drivers charge everybody $7-$8 and it HAS happened over and over and over...Why ? Because nobody cares a damn to do anything about it. Worse insult of all...suddenly there is NO TRANSPORTATION for ANYONE on Central Ave. the Bus line cancels the service and all there are in response are PITHY signs that claim a congressman NO ONE HAS HEARD OF will address the situation. Address this GET THE BUSES BACK. AND, we are worried about the police? Please, who runs this place, get the mayor to do something...OR, let's do something about it. Surely we voted him, maybe he can earn his votes...And, please the people who busted their butts on the Loew's Movie theater, after years making it nice, the mayor wants to stall them from having a rightful claim, PLEASE!
