There are already fire extinguisher tags in JC, just not downtown. Head over to the 1&9/Lower Hack neighborhood or 1&9 North, just past the tonnelle circle. I forget who did them, I'd have to check the photo archives.

Have you considered asking the neighbors how much the LACK of an addition may be worth to them? There are different ways to make a property an investment.

Hey smart guy,

The eastern entrance isn't "completely new". The original station layout had two exits, one on the west end (where the McDonald's is now located - check the utility closets at that end that still contain remnants of the passageway).

The eastern end has always been there, but was closed off when the central mezzanine was constructed in the 1970's when the PRR trestle was taken down.

That's actually a very nice neighborhood. My wife and I were looking at apartments in the area because of the good schools and large, safe playground down the block for our daughters to spend time in with their au pair. Alas, we were priced out and had to settle in the rather dingier and slightly more dangerous Downtown area.

Good luck!

Taking photos of the NJ Turnpike is also illegal and has been for decades.

The NJ Turnpike is technically private property, which the TP Authority uses as an excuse to claim that they can ban photography. They cannot. Photos taken anywhere are considered to be the intellectual property of the photographer, regardless of the circumstances in which the photo was taken, and do not have to be shown to the police unless they have PC to make a search of your person.

It has nothing to do with public safety. Banning photography accomplishes nothing in the war on terror, and you shouldn't be "cool with that".

I recommend you read Bruce Schneier's essay titled "The War on Photography" at: http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2008/06/the_war_on_phot.html

"The 9/11 terrorists didn't photograph anything. Nor did the London transport bombers, the Madrid subway bombers, or the liquid bombers arrested in 2006. Timothy McVeigh didn't photograph the Oklahoma City Federal Building. The Unabomber didn't photograph anything; neither did shoe-bomber Richard Reid. Photographs aren't being found amongst the papers of Palestinian suicide bombers. The IRA wasn't known for its photography. Even those manufactured terrorist plots that the US government likes to talk about -- the Ft. Dix terrorists, the JFK airport bombers, the Miami 7, the Lackawanna 6 -- no photography."

The lack of a way for pedestrians to get out is also a problem for people who don't have cars and are trying to decide how to get out of the city in an emergency.

Example: if a giant hurricane were coming, I'm sure I'm healthy enough to walk to Newark, if that would help, but I don't know how to get over the river. At least it sounds as if it's theoretically possible to walk over the Witpenn.

I think that would be an example of what is called "survival of the fittest".

And while a hurricane might be a poor example of a reason to evacuate, with all this "post-9/11 world" bitching and moaning I see on this board every day, you'd think the first thing people would do when living in a sensitive area would be to prepare some sort of contingency plans for worst-case scenarios.

I gave up trying the Rt. 7 and Lincoln Highway routes to get past the rivers to do rides around north jersey. Now I just take my bike on the PATH to Harrison or Newark (not that that's a lot of fun, but it takes away 20 minutes of what would otherwise be complete misery).

You compare JC to Hiroshima?

I suppose by that measure Bayonne is Dresden?

By this logic, Bayonne would be Nagasaki.

I use a good U-lock that can fit around the rear tire and rear fork section of the frame at the same time, and a thick metal chain + padlock to chain the front tire to the frame. The seat comes inside.

I've had tires stolen before, the one or two times i forgot to make sure they were locked up.

Also, (see what I just did there), you can hit the Return key two times to start a new paragraph to address another person/topic so you don't need to submit every sentence separately. It would also make you look less like a ranting lunatic.

Um... deathtraps? People die in death traps. People don't die on the PATH.

Besides, the PA wanted to open up a second exit at 9th Street a few years ago but the neighbors wouldn't let them. They successfully re-opened the second entrance at Grove Street.

6 pm? i would definitely recommend you take a drive through the area around midnight or so before you commit to anything.

if they're telling you the area is "now" journal square, they sound kinda desperate to unload the property on someone that doesn't know the area too well.

i spend every day on railroad tracks, and i can tell you those things can really sneak up on you, especially at 70 mph. maybe freight trains are running on multiple-mile track circuits, but the real dangerous ones run with insulated joints every 1000 feet or so, keeping the vibrations out until the train is just about on you.

as far as hitting tunnels goes, the PATH train is pretty much impossible these days. however, the NYC Subway tunnel club is alive and well.

alb, Manhattan Transfer used to be located along the right-of-way in Harrison, near the border with Kearny. It was meant for passengers to switch from steam trains to electric trains before the entire line to Philly was electrified. PATH (well, Hudson & Manhattan Railroad) trains did stop there from 1911 to 1937.

Marin Blvd. also turns back into Henderson Street north of the Holland Tunnel viaduct. Same thing with Manila Ave.. It's Grove Street on the south, Grove Street on the north. Really fantastic urban planning.
