Re: Jersey City mulls changes to pedestrian plaza to address rowdy bar-goers

Greg is right.

We're talking about an incredibly small percentage of time that Downtown is a problem, and it's really only a problem for one single block.

The Porta in Asbury has cops posted outside their door, and metal detectors to get in. That's the crowd they draw on weekends.

I mean the problem is right there. We don't need a committee to figure this out. Go to the source of the problem.

I hate to pull the stupid, "I've been living here for blah blah blah" card, but I'll do it anyway...

I've been living here for blah blah blah years and....

the problems on the summer weekends are clear as day. It's a handful of bars that cater to younger out of town kids that get sloppy drunk and make a mess of the place because they don't know any better.

Talde and Porta are the problem on Friday and Saturday. Talde has been so bad with their Thursday-Saturdays that Keyhole has been closing early to avoid the spillover when Talde kicks them out at 1:45, an hour earlier than everybody else, which then makes all these drunks everybody else's problem. This kids scream in the street. They sneak glasses outside and smash them on the curb. They loudly take group pictures around and on top of parked cars. They fight, they puke, they get in petty arguments. Then when it's all over, they get in their cars and drive home drunk. Look at Erie St on a Sunday morning. 100% devoid of cars. They all leave at 3 or 4am after they've littered the area.

One cop walking up and down the plaza would solve most of this. I mean, what else are the cops here for if not to deal with quality of life issues like this for residents? It's always astonishing to me to see a squad car pull up to the plaza with its lights on. Why wasn't it just parked there the whole time?

As for the private security or over-time off-duty cop paid for by the restaurants... what? Why the hell should LITM have to pay extra for Porta's problem?

Give?

Lol.

They have their shit together. You don't get a say. Who on MLK is going to offer resistance to them buying out the entire neighborhood?

Pros: 100% reduction in gun related violence

Cons: 100% increase in herpes spread through circumcision

If he was in a mixed use building, he would have general keys that would get him in anywhere in the building that wasn't his specific studio. $5,000 still seems high, unless they were all Medico keys or whatever. Those things are stupid expensive.

Fuck this woman. Hope she gets what's coming to her.

I live next door to Talde. It happened. They had cops posted up every 20 feet or so.

None of you heard about it because none of you pathetic peons are worth even a fraction of what they were looking to get in donations. You'd be taking up space that could be potentially occupied by another Goldman higher up.

Somehow, my invitation was also lost in the mail.

Dudes I know were supposed to play a show at Citizen last week but got there to find the place was closed. Grapevine said something about issues with the liquor license? Nothing concrete, but they were still doing takeout food orders with the kitchen open as of a week ago.
Weird. Hope it works out for them.

It's definitely been getting tighter lately.

Used to be that as long as you were home before dinner time you were good to go, even on a Friday or Saturday.

Last night I couldn't find a spot for the life of me and actually gave up and went back out. hah

The permit parking should probably be amended to some degree to get people to use the lots and garages for their weekend adventures. You can park legally without a permit from 5pm on Friday until 10am on Monday. That's not terribly helpful to a resident with a job, who wants to be parked exactly during those hours.

$800k.

I still maintain I could build that bridge myself, annually, for the next 80 years, and still come in at under that budget, but that's probably a separate conversation.
Point is, putting bridges back up, fences along the entirety of the edge of the structure, as well as whatever ADA crap you'd have to do(I'm picturing a ramp with 100 switchbacks, emergency lights, and raised bump warning mats near the edges) would push this project into the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Personally, I think that if Jersey City maintains its trajectory, it would be worth it and would serve as a fantastic way to visually and socially connect downtown with other neighborhoods if done in accordance with Bergen Arches, etc.

If you're arguing that it wouldn't cost that much though, you're going to lose that argument. Some how, some way, I promise you it would end up costing almost half a billion, if not more.

I'm a contractor, which means I know where every dump is in the tri state area and what time they close. Brooklyn has a great station way out in the netherlands that's open 24/7, which is incredible for tradesmen.

About 3 or 4 years ago I was waiting in line at the dump at about 5am and I see these party girls staggering down the street and into an apart across the street.
I always joked about it, but it finally happened. They're literally living at the dump.

Amazing.

Vaguely related. I'm always surprised how casual station attendants are about letting vagrants aggressively harass their customers.

Saw that place, thanks. That's a great score for somebody.

I'm pretty dug in here on Erie. I've got about 700sq for $1700. It would take a slam dunk for me to move, but I was hoping to get into a 2BR this year, due to the young master learning to walk this week.
Unfortunately very few units listed as 2BR's actually are. They're 1BR/500-600sq units with a wall put up that divides what should be the bedroom and living room and they're calling them 2BRs.
Better off staying put an avoiding the mental/wallet anguish of moving.

That's VV spot is sweet though. I'm passing that along. There's also a place on Jersey right now that looks great and is priced right, going for I think it was 1850 for a large 1BR.

Also, if there's any discouraged parties out there looking for a place reading this thread, the deal is out there. Just keep at it. I've never paid a broker's fee in my life and never will. Hit the streets. Ask the old timers who's got a place for sale. A lot of the people you see sitting on stoops watching the world go by are secret millionaires who own dozens of rentals in town.
That's how I nabbed this place I'm in now.

Finding the listings is easy, sifting through to finding which of them are actual real live apartments you can rent is entirely another.

Tough to find the real deal that meets your list of requirements.

I was close a month ago, but they decided to renovate and pulled it off the market before I could sign. Dang.

If anybody needs me, I will be at 1st and Erie.... forever.

I think a lot of you guys are getting capitalism and free enterprise mixed up in the changing neighborhood argument.

Personally, I have no gripe with Rainbow. It's whatever. I also have no gripe with somebody wishing to open something else in that space.

I do have a gripe with people coming in from out of town, acting like buffoons, driving drunk, smashing bottles, and generally being shitheels, then heading home to other towns, leaving me with their broken glass and piss.
When Porta opened, the amount of people that fit that description increased somewhat. South House the same. Talde too to a degree.
This is absolutely part of a changing neighborhood scenario. With successful nightlife comes the crappy byproducts of successful nightlife. You know, jerks.

What I think a lot of you guys here are missing is that it's ok to both want change AND to have reservations about the opening of a bar from an ownership group that specifically courts an out of town client for weekend revelry.

I'm going to wait to see what the theme of the place will be before I get my knickers fully in a twist. If it's something like Porta or South House, cool. I dig the theme of good looking places with solid date night menus that turn into party spots on Friday.
If it's 2Republik, I'll be a little bummed about it. I really don't wanna see people flooding my street looking for pitchers of Coors to wash down their reheated frozen wings. We really truly don't need a place like that on the plaza. It won't add anything to the neighborhood to the people that live here.

There's certainly foot traffic, but there's nowhere close to what Newark gets.
Additionally, commerce ends at 1st St. There's nothing up Grove business wise until... well actually I guess there's nothing up Grove. Period.
