Is this just a demographic phenomenom or does this have an impact on quality of life? Discuss among yourselves and prepare a 5 minute presentation. Flip charts and markers are in the supply closet.

What is going on with PATH this morning at 11 AM...Total chaos as NY tracks are shut down; passengers directed to the Newark side to go to NY and then after getting on a train clearly marked WTC PATH personnel & police yelling at everyone on board this packed train to get off and go upstairs for their own safety. People told to take shuttle buses to Grove...Saw track people east of the station with flags...PATH site says something about the structural integrity of the Journal Square platform...Not good...

At 1:45 at WTC the announcement was that due to a partial bridge collapse near JSQ the train would end at Grove with free buses to JSQ (#80).

The only conclusion that can be drawn from this is many people are stunningly naive and ignorant of reality. They live in some kind of dream world. In a way, it is not surprising. Unfortunately, putting your head in the sand won't change the truth.

The worst part is it's often fed by professionals who should know better. These renderings were done by an architect who's supposed to understand practicalities. Some of the "ideas" floating around after Sandy were just as ludicrous, like filling in the 50 ft deep main NY Harbor anchorage and channel with "reefs", like waves were the problem not the fucking sea rising over everything. There was something just recently about creating new land by filling in the east river and reducing the main hudson channel to a sliver. Somehow an idiot idea if rendered in a pretty picture gets credence.

an alternative conclusion is that the only people who took this seriously were the people who thought other people were taking it seriously. Now, I'd like to discuss using that 9/11 sculpture as a giant human slingshot.....

Don't worry we have a ways to go, we are only at 65% of what the system used to handle.

--PATH's busiest year - 1927 with 113 Million riders (H&M RR)

--Last year - 73 Million

Actually, I am very worried. Here's why: Yes agree the absolute numbers were larger back then, but that's not the full picture. Ridership patterns have changed significantly. During the twenties there was much more back and forth ridership between NYC and JC. For example, rush hour would be busy in both directions. There was a lot more over-night ridership for shift workers in industries that no longer exist. These days there's limited ?reverse commute? ridership during rush hour so trains return nowhere near full, there are many fewer night shift workers, and so on.

My experience trying to board the 33rd St trains at Pavonia/Newport during the morning rush hour, pretty much confirms to me that the system is over-capacity during those peak times when people need to get to work. It's not infrequent that I must wait for the next train to be able to get on. It's only going to get a lot worse when all the (over) development is completed.

Not sure if this contributes much to crowding, but it seems that people take up more space. I never carried more than a briefcase to work (now retired!!!). It seems a lot of people carry large backpacks, shopping bags, etc. Even if you hold these between your legs, your stance is probably wider than need be to maintain stability. Also those papoose-like baby carriers and strollers were probably a rare sight when PATH reached its peak capacity.

You mean....a ferry?

Here's MY idea. Oar propelled longboats manned by commuters. You show up at the longboat dock, when enough people have turned up to man the boat, like 20, you row across, just like people crossed the Hudson for thousands of years before steam and bridges. It's kinda like Citibike for boats.

Kind of like galley slaves below deck.

http://www.reidsitaly.com/destination ... ing/around-traghetto.html

Having ridden the ferry for two winters after 9/11, I suggest a traghetto, but with ice breaker capability. Since most of the passengers will be suits and suitettes and the boats' inspiration is Italian, we could name them Armani, Gucci, etc. To insure safe passage we might consider human sacrifice before the first boat leaves in the morning. Let's say the first dipsh!t standing in the middle of the gangplank texting while others are trying to board.

Books can go to the Grace Van Vorst Book Sale. Kids books are not sold, they are there for the taking. Drop off Sundays from 12:30. Not sure when they close.

For toys, maybe try Hope House, next to Saint Mary's (I think name transubstatiated to something else) on Second off Erie.

Two roast pork buns from the Asian Market on 440 will be less than $2.00. I think the only ones available by the piece are the baked ones, not the steamed. They also have a steam table with several selections, but I've never tried any of it. I think you can get two bbq quail for $5.00, for a change of pace or 1/2 pound of bbq pork for $4.00. I believe there are a few tables between the two sets of doors.

Untwist your panties. The Indian grandmas will walk in their colorful pajamas, their IT-employed kids speak with Indian accents but dress Western, and their kids are 100% American. That's how it has worked for 200 years. I don't understand your problem.

I found this interesting. Seems like these sari wearing moms are bringing their kids up to be main stream Americans. Sorry Polonius, but what one wears is irrelevant.

Most times I will not eat dtjc if I can't find parking and that is usually half of the time. I will not pay for 2 hour parking. I would rather jump on the lightrail to the Path and eat in NYC.

You, your neighbors and anyone else driving into DTJC for dinner would be doing everyone a favor if you told the managers of the restauarants you go to in DTJC that you would come more often if they offered validated parking. As far as I can figure only Skinner's Loft does that, but I don't know under what conditions. Also, Grove Pointe offers $6.00 parking from 6:00PM to closing.

So if you can't find a suitable public school you go private or suburbs, but if you can't find a parking space they cut street cleaning.

How about a two step program:
benign neglect
enforcement

Eventually people will pretend their car is like a Jersey City child and either go private or move. Maybe someone should write a book: What to Name Your Baby-Motor. ( French Cathedrals are cool: Chartres, Sens, Amiens...)

Can't speak for the rest of JC, but a cop on the beat issuing parking tickets in DTJC might pay for him/her self and maybe save a life or injury. Ever see a firetruck or ambulance not able to turn?

Yes by all means give up a garment that is:

modest

flattering to all body types - one probably never hears - does this sari make my ass look fat in Hindi

made of natural fibers - silk or cotton

in addition, women who wear a sari are probably the only people not wearing any clothes made in China, this country's biggest military and economic enemy. Hear, hear, let's cheer these inadvertent patriots.

I am also a big fan of the Shalwar Kameez for the same reasons.

If this is why I was spared the bother of recycling two packets of grocery ads this week, then I'm all for it.

BTW those flyers are on line, if you must look at them, and Shop-rite's coupons load onto your card. No paper, happy trees!!

Don't have much cause to visit other parts of the city, but downtown is pretty clean for an urban area, maybe because residents clean up after the sweeper and the trash collectors.

If you walk by right now, you would never know it had been a grocery. Front room is filled with tables and chairs. Maybe they will expand the menus. I don't think they are tweaking the grocery project - refrigeration is gone.

Precisely because of what you describe in your second paragraph it is that concepts like One Medical Group have emerged and thrived. I am a member and I think it is money well spent. I know that if I need to see a doctor, I can get in without prior planning. And, if I make an appointment to see a doctor, I know I will be seen at the exact time I was told. Their membership cost is incredibly worth it if you visit a doctor often, and even if you only go on rare occasions (biannually for me!) I still think it is worth the peace of mind. Everything is electronic, no paperwork whatsoever, they electronically transmit (or, call in) your prescriptions for you (no need to do anything other than go pick them up at your pharmacy of choice) and they do labs and bloodwork in house, so no need to go to some lab location for basic things.

Thanks for the report - I was feeling (even more) elitist than usual about this. They are located across from the Apple Store, so not a bad walk from 14th or Christopher.

This is very typical here in JC, these over priced places pop up to cater to all these people living in "luxury" apts but most of those people don't even shop in JC, they are shopping and eating in restaurants across the river.

I wish them well.

Perhaps, User, but I also got the sense that a lot of their customers were from the higher the hair the closer to Jesus suburbs (HHCJS). As a Covey, living on Erie Street, I'd be quite happy to see both Carrino and Talde replaced by less hip and or yup establishments. How about a great Cantonese place or a real Italian market like the one that used to be at Monmouth and Newark? Or a real butcher - Maloney's East.

I've bought from Asian Market twice. Never again. Nothing was labeled, all shellfish and salmon farmed. Asking to have filets pulled from a whole fish was not a service that they performed. Suggest that people extend their mental maps to include the fish market in Chelsea market if the new Jersey Ave. market doesn't have what they want at a price you consider reasonable.
