dtjcview - you can support grassroots non-profit animal organizations that do not kill. Local groups are Companion Animal Trust, Hudson County Animal League, Jersey Cats, to name a few. None of these receive municipal funding and rely only on donations.

You bet No Kill takes a lot of hard work but it starts with the decision to be No Kill. Like all the communities listed on the blog, they decided that they wanted to become No Kill and they have achieved it. Stop enabling the killing and making excuses that allow the killing to continue. There are 3,500 shelters in this country. If there are a 100 - 200 of them that have achieved No Kill status you have to accept the reality that the killing can stop.

If you wish to speak about No Kill please be sure to do your research first because there are over 212 Municipal shelters in the US that achieve No Kill (90% save rate of all treatable and rehabilitateable aniamls) each year. You can start by reading Out the Front Door blog. LHS kills about 40% - 50% of the animals it takes in. And the dogs are suffering terribly there because they live in 2 x 4 cages that are out of code by the State of NJ regulations.

I wish they were not, but almost no shelters that have mandatory intake are no kill. Generally, "no kill" means rescues that have the luxury to refuse intake until spots open up in foster. Refusing to donate to them is going to result in more kill, not less kill.

Apparently these "huge" bumps are going up all over JC. Harrison Avenue between West Side Ave and JFK have TWO on the block. One is of normal size while the second one is mammoth. I hit the second one and flew in the air. I am not aware of any damage to my car but I will have a mechanic have a look at the under carriage. Not against speed bumps, but the rollout of this is a complete fail.

I really like your fence and door color. I am in the process of redoing my front steps and will eventually have to redo the fencing. I looked up Iron Works but did not find them in North Bergen. There was an Iron Works in JC on Coles but they moved to Hoboken. Is this the place you used? Can you provide a phone number when you get a moment?

If your driveway is legal, call the Parking Authority and ask them to have the "No Parking" sign painted in the street in front of your curb. You will then send them a check for the cost. I think it's around $25.

We do cat adoptions every Sunday at Fussy Friends at 148 Newark Avenue from 11 am - 5pm. Since we started our partnership with Fussy Friends in 2012 we have adopted out 163 cats.

Each Sunday we drive the cats and our equipment to the store, unload and then find appropriate parking. If the street is closed to us, will someone from the Harsimus Cove Association step up and carry these heavy items for us?

The owners of Fussy Friends do not support this closure either. Customers purchase heavy bags of litter and food almost weekly and use their cars to transport it home. If they cannot bring their cars onto Newark Avenue Fussy Friends will lose these customers.

So you're the only bitter disgruntled ex-employee from city hall. Eventually everyone gets kicked off the public sector gravy train. Even the role of Mayor isn't guarenteed nor is the role of president.

Someone please explain to me how this works. The Mayor is for the most part hiring campaign volunteers and buddies into jobs that already have someone in that job. That employee then is "transferred" to another department where they "create" a job for him or her. So we are paying two salaries when we should be paying only one. Where is the value in that? As taxpayers I think we are being taken. And from what I hear City Hall is hiring like crazy.

The cats in the flyer photo are not the actual cats behind Sava's Deli. However, the colony she was feeding are all black and yes they have been neutered and eartipped in 2009 by the Neighborhood Feral Cat Initiative.

Re: LHS Budget to Be Slashed and Turned Into a Kill Shelter -- Can Anything Be Done?
#53
Home away from home
Home away from home

To answer your question, yes LHS is a kill shelter. The mission of LHS is not No Kill. It's to save some and kill the rest. LHS President Andrew Siegel is misleading the public when he said "our mission is to get every animal adopted." I personally wish the LHS mission truly was to get every animal adopted but it is not.

About 50% of the animals that enter it are killed each year. Annual intake is usually 2,500 - 3,000. Live annual release rate is about 1,200 +/-. Do the math.

The shelter is supposed to have capacity for minimum of 75 dogs. It does not. It has space for 40 dogs.

LHS cannot and should not make a animal control and sheltering agreement with the city of Bayonne. LHS DOES NOT HAVE THE SPACE TO DO THAT. It will compromise the already dire situation for space and put that many more animals lives at stake. THIS IS CRITICAL.

The Council is misguided in cutting the shelter budget. It is a forboding sign I fear. Council President Lavarro is irresponsible when he says "the shelter administers unneeded services to animals brought in by animal control." That is an uneducated person talking. Just because the State of NJ Health Dept does not mandate vaccinations for each animal on intake does not mean it is unneeded. Illness spreads extremely fast in a shelter environment.

The financial numbers quoted in the article are confusing. $9,000 a month is $108,000 annually. That is more than the $82,000 or $6,833 a month defunding originally claimed.

Another false statement that "the closure of the other shelter 6 years ago put a lot on the shoulders of LHS". This is completely false. The other shelter was handling sheltering for other Hudson County cities NOT Jersey City. LHS does not take in any animals due to the closure of the Hudson County SPCA. If LHS is perpetuating this lie, they need to stop now.

Lastly, my question is to the Board of Directors of LHS. How much money has the "board" itself raised and is currently raising for the operations of the shelter. That is the whole purpose of a board. To raise money. Does anyone know or have an answer to this?

Please call and email all the council people and ask them to restore the $82,000 funding to the LHS budget. And tell them not to allow LHS to make a contract with Bayonne.

Trap Neuter Return is endorsed by the Humane Society of US, ASPCA, Best Friends, Alley Cat Allies and has become the national "non-lethal" way to manage feral/free roamng/community cat.

Municpalities across the country have instituted TNR Feral Cat ordinances and have partnered with local non profits. PetSmart Charities gives away hundreds of thousands dollars each year in grants to spay neuter feral cats. The ASPCA and Best Friends also give grants for this.

To learn more about the benefits of TNR check out the Alley Cat Allies and Neighborhood Cats websites.

LHS has no programs to address the feral cat population in either Jersey City or Hoboken where they contract for animal control. They have left that up to the community as has the City although the Animal Control is making a very slight effort.

I started the Neighborhood Feral Cat Initiative in 2009 to address the JC feral problem and to create a public dialogue about community and feral cats. We train residents how to Trap Neuter Return. We loan traps for free. And we provide grant funding to pay for the spaying and neutering.

Since 2009 we have spayed and neutered 2,000+ community/feral cats mostly in Jersey City. Hundreds of residents have taken the training workshop. All of this has been done without any municipal/government funding and without any paid employees.

Imagine what you can do with some funding and paid employees.

I only attend council meetings that have an agenda item that is of strong interest to me because I find attending council meetings a complete turn off. You cannot hear the council members speak because of a poor or improperly used sound system, very late starts, and awards and recognitions at start of the meetings that delay business.

Wouldn't it be nice if the new council and mayor encouraged citizen attendance by making a few minor changes to address these issues.

Please visit the Jersey City shelter managed by Liberty Humane Society first. They are located across from the Liberty Science Center near Liberty State Park. www.libertyhumane.org

CARE is a well established rescue located in Bayonne. They are not a shelter so dogs are in foster homes.
http://www.carenj.com/

See Spot Rescued is new in the area but brings up puppies and pure breed dogs from the south. Again no shelter. Dogs are in foster homes.

Don't know anything about the building, but as far as I know, the neighborhood's still Bergen Lafayette. Berry Lane is the name of the (now on hiatus) park that's being built there right off of, you guessed it, Berry Lane.

There are signs throughout the area that says "welcome to the Berry Lane neighborhood"

Must be rebranding in action.
