Racism has nothing to do with it.
It is simply data analysis.

The data is what the data is.

Did you ask them to remove the backpacks?

They were wrong for keeping them on, but instead of suffering the entire trip, just speak up and embarrass them.

I hope that each one of you that complained take a shopping trip to BJ's, find that you can't get a cab to take you back in a timely manner (most of the cab services will not reliably show up at the supermarkets), and have no way to push the shopping cart home.

I also further hope that you have to buy a car for the sole purpose of grocery shopping.

I also further hope that once you have removed another tiny piece of the charm of Jersey City without it being replaced with something legitimate and positive, you find it a more and more miserable place to live.

Yuppie scumbags.

Why don't you go out and buy a black folding cart and use it to push your groceries home instead of littering downtown JC with the cart you stole?

You consider red BJ's carts strewn about downtown charming? Wow.

Here is the email response that I received today from the general manager: I am pleased to inform you that within the next two weeks BJ's Wholesale Club will be installing a new and improved wheel locking system on our shopping carts.

Reminds me of the movie "The Money Pit" with Tom Hanks.

"How long will it take to fix my home?"
"Two Weeks!"

Something really should be done, and I think a waist-high barrier requirement may just be the best solution.

I agree that the barriers are a good idea - but i don't think it wouldn't work in this case. Where would you "draw the line"?

If the carts are permitted to go into the parking lot, can you imagine how large the perimeter would need to be? Plus, you can't but barriers on the access road right in front of BJs and ShopRite - this would allow a way out for the carts.

BJ's just needs to be a responsible member of the community and put electronic wheel locks on their carts like the other stores do.

I'm not familiar with how the Pathmark lot is laid out, so if the barriers work there they could maybe work here.

Can we please have a Google Map with all the carts on it? I wish I knew how to make that and I would do it myself, but I am inept in such matters.

BJ's Shopping Carts - Downtown Jersey City, NJ

Anyone w/ a gmail account can modify it. Please add any cart sightings you see. I went through the thread and added the ones listed.

How about we take action and tackle the problem by bring them back to BJ's.

Village,

You have good intensions, but what will that do? They'll thank you for saving them the effort and money from having to retrieve them.

The point is to keep them from getting the carts back. Destroy them, sell them, hide them, take them apart... don't end up doing them a favor.

Has anyone brought this up to Steven Fulop yet? I'm sure he'd be useful for this type of thing.

I worked with him to get the garbage trucks on my street moved to an earlier time. He got the job done!

JCLAW:

As usual, very informative posts..

I know about abatements being "locked in" for 20 or so years (typically, some gradually increase...) but I keep hearing different things about what happens at the end of that 20 year period.

Right now, my new property was purchased at about $400,000. Abated taxes come to 1.75% of purchase price. After 20 years, i've heard some say it'll go to 2 % some say more.. and i don't know what to believe... it would really make a difference in how long i keep this property.. so if you can clarify, it would be much appreciated..

Is Hudson Exchange going to be situated directly east of Mandalay? On that little vacant plot of land?

If so, i don't see how it can be "constructed in such a way as to not block much, if any, of the views from adjacent buildings."

Atleast there's some retail coming to the Second St.

2nd St, East of Washington is becoming busier now as well. People drive down the road going 40-50 MPH!

The street, with 3 apartment/condo complexes on it has about 15 "Permit Parking Only" signs, but not one Speed Limit sign! Speed bumps would help a lot here; if the city doesn't one permanent ones, it can install the temporary, portable ones used in Hoboken.

What do the residents have to do to get some representation here?? Go to Fulup? Obviousy, going to the police doesn't help.

I propose each one of us should videotape these traffic violations and send the tapes to the media.

Embarassment goes a long way in shaming people into action.

Wow! Demanding affordable housing sounds like fun!

I'm gonna move to Beverly Hills, CA next month and demand a $200,000 house in between two $5,000,000 mansions!

Afterall, it's a democracy right?! Sure, they'll let me demand it, but there ain't no way they're gonna build "affordable housing" there.

Why should they here? If you can't afford downtown JC, look for an area you can afford. Simple.

I couldn't afford a condo in Manhatten, so I moved to JC. I'm a "lefty" but what's fair is fair, if you can't afford the area.. move on.

I worked hard at school and work to be able to live in an area which is safer and nicer. There's no way I'm going to welcome affordable housing in my area. Enough crime is imported into downtown JC as is, no need to encourage it.

I want to be able to move to Greenwich, Connecticut one day.. but I won't till I can afford it.

People are always looking for free rides. Work for it!

JCLAW,

Thanks for clarifing that! I knew it wasn't like I assumed, but I feel better knowing the increase won't be that bad.

I'm not in H.P., but I can estimate what it would be for my area.

Thanks for the input and welcome to a real message board unlike that other one...

BTW 3 - Most Jersey City homeowners, due to unupdated valuations, are only paying about .7% of property value in taxes even with the Healy rates. Healy is frantic to jam in as many abatements as he can to generate revenue to prevent a reval because typical JC homeowners taxes will double when a reval happens. Don't believe me? Pay a visit to the city business administrator for a full explanation of why the council keeps pushing "abatements" through.

Someone from the JC Tax office came to our first condo board association meeting, what he said about taxes downright scared me!

He said the equilization ratio will go to 100%. So, the rate would be (.052 x purchase price) instead of (.052 * (.34*purchase price))

Does anyone know if this is true? if so, that will more than double tax rates! There's no way that can happen. Someone, please tell me it's not so!
