Re: Motorcycle passenger dies from injuries after crash with jitney in Jersey City

i am very cautious when riding my motorbike around town, too many crazies. I always stay way away from jitneys... they are the worst...

and not to be the victim blaming guy, but if you are on a bike without a helmet, not only are you breaking the law, but you are also, as we see here, risking your life even more than just riding on the streets.

Yeah, it's such an amazing building, and huge for the area, as you mention!

And oh, the walking tour sounds good Wishful, thanks!

we've also wondered if it is a private residence since we never see any sign of life, and the cheap plastic blinds are always closed... it's such a beautiful building!

We've driven and walked past it a zillion times, and always wondered... what's the deal with the awesome building on the north east corner of Bowers and Summit? Anyone know?

We've never seen any signs of life in it, the cheap plastic blinds are always closed, and there's been a hole in a first floor window for years....

Anyone know what the deal is there?

I feel like Hoboken cabs are even worse. When you get out of the PATH / Light Rail at the Hoboken Terminal, the cab prices vary, AND they fill the car with customers, even though it's illegal, and it says so in every cab... but since the racket exists, and laws are never enforced on the drivers it won't stop.

My trip to the Heights can be anywhere from $7 to $8 to $9 to $10 - depending on who the cab driver is. And, they fill the car and drop me off last. So, on one trip from the terminal, with four passengers, ending in the east side of the Heights, and the cabbie has probably made about $50 bucks or more... what a rip off....

Real mexican food is my favorite food of all. Got an addiction to it when I lived a few feet from the Mexican border in Arizona...

Having said that, I also have an addiction to Taco Bell! Woohoo! Make a run for the border!

Anyone out here ever have Del Taco? I don't think it exists on the east coast, but boy was that yummy also!

Also, make sure your parking spot is legal! If you do not have curb cut outs, odds are your driveway is not legal...

One benefit (of many) of living on the eastern edge of The Heights and the proximity of good amenities there - restaurants, gyms, transportation... All are within a 15 minute walk... And as many have mentioned - we have two great parks, a growing arts scene, farmers market, etc.

You mentioned children - we have a toddler who does pre-K in the heights and we love it. For school he'll either go to PS 28, or private (catholic) school in Hoboken, or, if we get lucky, he'll get a lottery ticket to a great charter school in Lincoln Park (LCCS).

You also mention commuting to the city - my wife works in Times Square, I work in Chelsea - we can either take buses, jitneys, light rail to the PATH train.... There are tons of options, you just need to test them out and find the best route for you. On a good day, I can be door to door at my office in 40 minutes, my wife, even less. On a bad day, however, it may be well over an hour!

Yeah, WM got progressively worse and worse. In December, after each pick up, our entire block was left with trash everywhere, and bottles in the gutters... i figured it was because they were pissed to be working at the holidays... either way... good riddance WM

Yeah, that article is a bit misleading. I know that Ocean County - Toms River - is reaching epidemic levels of young people ODing on heroin... it is now cheaper there than a beer or cigarettes... so the kids are turning to it... and dying!

Re: the bike lanes in Hoboken that someone referenced. They are a joke. Sure they got Zimmer a plaque for being a bike friendly city, but I have never, ever, seen a bicyclist riding in the bike lanes themselves. On the side streets, the roads are too narrow to ride safely, in some intersections, the arrows have you crossing diagonally thru the intersection, and finally, 99% of them are unusable because there is no double parking enforcement in Hoboken... until that is addressed, those bike lanes are useless.

Yeah, but a lawyer, with judicial experience, and elected position experience seems like a good hire to me. I know it's policy on this board for everyone to bash Healy unquestioningly (dont know that's a real word!). And as for what lawyers (and any type of consultant for that matter) get paid, $42K is not what I would consider a "fat paycheck".....

I don't get why people are bashing him for this? He was a lawyer for years, then a judge for years, then an elected official... he seems pretty qualified to me. And really, that kind of money for a lawyer is a pretty good deal.... is he not allowed to get a job now that he doesn't hold office?

Asking seriously, not trolling....

Hi Bunny,

That's fine, I hope you do increase your home's value. Having said that, if you real estate trends in The Heights over the past decade, there really isn't that much of an uptick in terms of home value increases...

We bought in the Heights because we love Jersey City as a whole, and the Heights was the right place for us to raise a family.
We don't have any intention of leaving.

ps - full disclosure - if we win $600 million in mega millions, we will still live in The Heights, but we'll probably buy an awesome place in Key West, and a private plane to take us there!

Not that I have anything different to add than what has already been said, but my first thing is "who cares" about gentrification? All you're really talking about is pushing out lower income people from their existing neighborhoods.

I love the Heights. It has everything my wife and I need. We both commute to NYC (she to time square, me to chelsea), and we take buses or light rail to PATH train. All are fine (except the often cancelled 119 bus in the rush hour evenings).

I am always at my office faster than co-workers who live in vrious parts of Brooklyn.

We lived downtown for many years, and while I think it's cool down there now with all the cool food spots and whatnot, it's virtually unrecognizable. Do I want the same thing to happen to the Heights? No. Would I like a few more interesting restaurants? Of course.

There is a ton of interesting stuff happening in The Heights without needed huge changes.

Why does Central have a ton of 99 cent stores? Because that's what the majority of the local population wants. A while ago on this board, people were saying they wish Central had a Gap or Anthropology and stuff like that... that stuff is barely successful in Hoboken, so there's no reason the Heights could support it.

But speaking of change, the change in residency in the Heights, near the elevator, is huge over the past 5 - 7 years... We now see tons and tons and tons of "hoboken types" waiting for the rush hour buses and light rail. Remember when the light rail platform would only have 1 or 2 people waiting on it? And they didn't enforce fares? Yeah, that was fun.

Anyhoo - the north east corner of the Heights is awesome. Two great parks, neat people - both new neighbors, and lifers, convenience (to hoboken restaurants, and to transportation)...

Love it here.

As for white dudes in khakis / suits - if they are wasted, I absolutely avoid them. Spending as much time in hoboken as I have, I have seen as much messed up behavior there from people as I have when i've lived in very economically depressed areas....

you're funny. You and I both know that if I said "black kids" I'd get attacked for being racist. Does any form you fill out that asks ethnicity say "black"? No, they say "african american". Do they ever say "European American?" Nope, they say "white (other than...)"....

I spent a lot of time in Africa and no one that ever discussed race (that I spoke to) agreed with the term african american.

Do I call myself European American? Nope. At best, you'll get from me is American of irish ancestry... but once again, that's not a field I can fill out on any form I've ever seen....

Re: knockout

I was assaulted by five african american youths, about 15 years ago in Harlem. Knockout? They tried. Gang assault? Definitely.

I was on a street corner on my way home in a not-so-good part of town. Sadly, as one of the only white people in a many-block radius, I had been assaulted and verbally harassed on many occasions prior...

So, I'm stading there waitinf for the light to change, and I was holding a bass amp. Heavy and awkward, and in both hands. I heard the guys come up behind me and they started saying "Roll this cracker" and "#OOPS# this honky" and "White ass bitch" and just about everything you could think of.

Then came the sucker punch from behind me on the right side... He got me square in the jaw and really rung my bell. He smashed one of my teeth (still missing to this day because really, who can afford dental insurance!)... I didn't fall down, and I didn't drop the amp. I turned around to face them and they all started laughing and hooting and yelling.

I looked them all up and down and tried to figure out what to do. I didn't want to show weakness, because they may very well kill me. So, I eyeballed the kid who hit me, spat my broken tooth at him, and said quietly and calmly "I'm going to put this down, and if you're all standing here when I'm done, I will kill you all".

This started more hooting and hollering "Oh shit! White boy is fucking crazy!" and similar things. So, I repeated it again, and slowly started turning to put it down next to me, and be able to get off at least one punch before they beat me, and as I did, they must've realize that if I was crazy enough to threaten a 5 to 1 situation, then maybe I had a gun or something, and they all took off.

Thank god they did. I was shaking and walked to the precinct that was literally about 100 yards away. Swollen cheek, bloody mouth, and missing took.

I told the desk sergeant what happened and that I wanted to report a racial attack. He laughed and said "Not here you won't". This was before hate crimes became anything to talk about.

I told him he was a douchebag and left.

Was this an attempt at "knockout"? Basically. But it was a mugging and attempted theft as well...

We had a similar situation once. The landlord started renovating the basement apartment below us, and caused all the mice to move upstairs to our apartment. He put some traps and caught some mice, but there were dozens. They poisoned some, which then died in the walls and made the house stink.

Eventually, he said he couldn't do much more so we said, "ok, you can't fix it, so we're getting a cat to catch the mice" His reply was "the lease says no pets. period." And we said, yeah, but the place is now overrun with mice that you can't control. He said, if you get a cat, you have to leave....

So, we did left. He wasn't a bad guy, he tried, but couldn't control it. We were good tenants so we got all of our security deposit back even though we broke the lease.

Teak is pretty, but definately more of a fist-pumper crowd.

Anything right near the PATH is not the best place for you if you like Union Hall in BK.

Louise & Jerry's is similar to a laid back BK bar (before Williamsburg went bonkers).

DCs in the back is the best Dive.

As someone else said - you'd probably like Pilsner House, but it is hard to get to....

Elysian is nice.

I'm sure most bars will be a little sports heavy tonight with the start of Monday Night Football, don't know if that bothers you.

At least Zep has space for kids, inside and out, no matter what else is going on...

Two Boots? Hate to suggest Tilted Kilt, as never been to the one in JC, but the one in Hoboken is very accomodating to people with toddlers.
