So, once northern NJ is eviscerated, I assume that central and southern NJ will pick up the slack, being high growth areas and whatnot?

I had a great experience with Dr. Ken Moadel. Not the cheapest in town, but eye surgery is not something for which I would scrape the bottom of the barrel.

He has apparently performed LASIK on a bunch of Yankees players, if that is at all reassuring for you.

can someone copy/paste that article into this thread? i guess i like the concept of unifying one system for NYC and Hudson county, especially since you cant bring bikes on the PATH during rush hour. This makes perfect sense to lock up outside all PATH stations in JC (not sure where that parking would be) and then having stations within walking distance of all PATH stations in NYC.

But I dont know why Hoboken didnt hop on board so that people can bike there from JC and vice versa. But Ill take JC>NYC over JC>Hobro any day.

This is unsettling. There is no reason for civilian law enforcement to have automatic weaponry. They're not going to have access to the proper training, and I can't think of a legitimate LE action that's going to require the use of suppressing fire.

As an aside, I bought an M1 from the CMP about a decade ago - it is (was?) a great program supporting the civilian militia. The Garand was ground-breaking at the time and remains a fantastic piece of machinery to this day. To clarify, however, an M1 Garand is a semi-automatic rifle, and doesn't have the off the shelf ability to be used as an automatic weapon.

If their pasta is too expensive, enough people won't buy it. They'll price adjust or go out of business.

The pricing will correct itself, or it won't. If it doesn't, it means that it's not "over-priced".

No, but they have moved thousands of jobs to Utah to avoid higher taxes and cost of living, and the correspondingly high salaries.

Companies like Goldman will maintain their NY / NJ footprints, because that's how they recruit and maintain their high-producing talent (I-Bankers pulling in $1.2MM / year ain't moving to Utah). But making it unsustainable to keep the $60M / year back-office jobs is a meaningful problem for this part of the country.

You realize that that's not how the law works, right? One judge's ruling does not a settled constitutional question make.

Case law suggests that the government absolutely has the ability (one might say duty) to imprison / isolate an individual whose contagious condition poses an active threat to the health and safety of the general public.

I am not aware of any case law suggesting that the government can do the same due to fear or ignorance of the actual threat.

For some context, swine flu killed more than 12,000 Americans during 2009 and 2010. No travel bans, light to moderate panic.

YTD, Ebola has killed one American. Push for travel bans, moderate panic.

Despite all the hysterics, Ebola is surprisingly difficult to catch as a layperson who isn't actively attending to symptomatic Ebola patients.

People worried about picking it up from the bowling alley or the train, or calling for travel bans and quarantines need to take a step back and consider the actual threat Ebola poses to Americans - not the media hype.

If we're going to be quarantining people who may or may not have been exposed to Ebola at some point, despite the doctors and pathologists who claims it's unnecessary and inflammatory, can we also quarantine people who don't vaccinate their children and actually spread disease?

Measles is a larger threat than Ebola, but it doesn't sell ads.

Don't let the haters get you down. Keep in mind that this is the local Internet - a great place for people to complain about items they may know little about.

Bottom line - restaurants provide a lot more societal good for a community than do food carts (or temporary food vendors). That doesn't mean that food carts don't have a place, but it does mean that there should be some balance.

If this lot isn't turned into an organic kale and stroller and used record store that doesn't accept credit card, it is only time before Jersey City turns into some mangled brew of Asia, Hoboken, and Union City.

Bros will eating from nightmarkets, consuming major brand beer, while their large dogs poop everywhere. Abandoned parking lots will become naked sushi restaurants, covered by 15 story buildings. At this point, Van Vorst is turned into a Chipotle and Hamilton Park is a parking garage.

Governor Fulop will allow this. The PATH will be packed, as more people come to Jersey City as every organic store has turned into a bar open until 6AM. And now, 15 story buildings have 7 stories of bars and the 8th floor has a Republican and the 9th has someone who wants to open a Fridays.

The entire historic district will be demolished, and will be redeveloped by Mr. Burns and Donald Trump. Every building must be 25 stories and if you don't own a car you will be castrated.

Not to be that guy, but assault weapons really aren't a thing. It's a political term generally used to mean "scary looking, military-style gun".

Assault rifles, which are can be used full auto (i.e. pull the trigger once, and multiple shots are fired), can actually be purchased by citizens, if they get a blessing from the BATFE. But you really need to be connected to get the tax stamp, and it's almost impossible to import / build new assault rifles, so they are essentially irrelevant.

This is a small sample size, but could be representative:

The Guardian - California police use of body cameras cuts violence and complaints

"But Rialto's randomised controlled study has seized attention because it offers scientific ? and encouraging ? findings: after cameras were introduced in February 2012, public complaints against officers plunged 88% compared with the previous 12 months. Officers' use of force fell by 60%."

Re: Isn't enough space' on street, so park in garages
#60
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Another young driver chiming in - I need a car, as I work further out in NJ, and a 20 minute commute via car becomes a 1.5 hour commute on public transportation.

Since I don't live in a luxury building with a dedicated garage, my options are pay for a dedicated park in a surface lot or try my hand at the crap-shoot that is street parking. Life's too short to drive around the block a half-dozen time a night, so I rent a spot in a surface lot.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't really understand this argument. If you have to have a car in JC (which is, in fact, a city), then you either need to pay for dedicated parking or park on the street. While it would be nice for every new apartment /condo unit to have 1.5 dedicated parking spots, that is unreasonable (given that developable land is at a premium).

Some new residents aren't going to drive, and some are. Those that do drive are going to make parking tighter for everyone else. No one has the right to an available parking spot on their block. Increased density is going to make the fact that free street parking isn't a right all that more obvious.
