Re: Shutdown Burke's Bar

I do have some fond memories of running to Burke's for a case of beer after all the liquor stores were closed (gotta be closed at 10PM, state law), and seeing a line of cars parked outside that obviously had the same idea. They kept those late night hangouts going.

Much better name. So it's the same guys? I got a little confused when I met up with one of our beer reps the other night and he mentioned the new bar setup. I knew the Dopeness guys had been looking for a liquor license for a while and thought maybe they had sold off to someone else who got it. If they got their own license that's awesome, it's a great space.

Newark huh? Odd. Beyond parties and stuff that the Devils do each year I don't think I saw much trick or treating going on in Newark in the 4+ years I lived there. Seeing it at #3 is...surprising. But maybe I don't give Newark enough credit. I lived in East Orange for about 6 years as well and I think I saw more trick or treating and stuff going on there, but probably less activities, since they seem to weight it by Halloween stores, movie theaters, candy stores, parties and the like. Which are more likely to be in a place like Newark.

We use Frontpoint for our shop. The price is pretty good, the customer service is good, and it is pretty reliable. We have door and window sensors, motion sensors, and a silent alarm panic button. I can easily set up and change alarm codes for my employees so I know who is coming in and out of the shop, and it's easy to set up alerts (via text or email or calls) to know if doors are opening or people entering at unexpected times. All this can be done online in a couple minutes.

It also has a backup battery and it runs on cellular networks so no worries about internet/telephone/power going out.

You should be aware that you have to get an alarm permit from the city and renew it for about $50 each year. If you get more than three false alarms in a year the city starts fining you.

Re: Should tipping be eliminated at eateries?

I can take a guess. We don't charge a delivery fee, opting instead for a minimum depending on where you live. A lot of restaurants around here use a delivery service, rather than hiring a delivery person themselves. That delivery service charges a fee for every delivery that goes out the door. Alternatively, they might do enough deliveries where it makes sense to have someone on hand, but not enough where that person is active enough to pay for their base wage, so a delivery fee could help pay their wage a bit.

edit: also if you're ordering through seamless, delivery.com, or anything like that, they are taking a cut of the sale, so a delivery fee could help offset that as well. I make sure to always call the restaurant directly when ordering food so they don't get hit with those fees, which are in addition to the CC fees they have on top of that.

I don't have super strong feelings about this at sit-down restaurants (although it would be nice to not have to think about/calculate tips), but it's takeout joints and other regular stores that drive me nuts with having a tip line on the credit card slip. Like, I feel like a dick if I put $0.00, but I don't feel that you deserve a tip for just handing me something. LOL. Like a liquor store for example. Thirsty Quaker is a culprit. I buy a couple six packs, then I when I sign the credit card slip there is a line for tip. Come on. It's awkward. Enough is enough with forced tipping.
hey man, don't feel bad if you don't tip on the receipt. We include it on there so that when we do deliveries it prints the tip line, and we haven't figured out a way to disable it for in-store receipts. I make a point to explain to most people that it's just for deliveries and they can just sign the bottom.

However, I know that some people do appreciate it when we help pick things out, or help with homebrew questions and recipes so they tip for that. 100% of the tips goes to buying beer for the staff so they can know what we're selling and make good recommendations.

I didn't get a renewal notice last year and just never bothered to get it renewed since I park at my shop most times. Now that I've moved to a new neighborhood I need to get a new permit though. Is there any way to mail in an application for a permit or do I have to go to the office? It's a real pain going there during the day.

El Sazon De Las Americas is seriously the best deal for food around, you can get a huge breakfast for a few bucks. Cheap empanadas too. At lunchtime, the two Indian buffets on Grove St are a great deal. $7 for all you can eat greasy Indian food and cheap samosas. Paratha Junction in Little India is another good place for Indian food on a budget.

John Soup cart on Columbus at Exchange place is good cheap lunch. $6 for a big helping of chicken or chicken chili and rice, and he has good soup for $3-5 too. Crab/Lobster bisque is slammin and the clam chowder is good too.

Another guy across the road on Columbus I call Pita Boss, he does chicken and rice for the same price with some more spices. You can also ask for chopped pita which he douses in sauce and fries up and is awesome with chicken or lamb.

Gypsy Grill deserves a shoutout too for their falafel and shwarma sandwiches. Hawawshi on the weekend is great too.

There's activity in White Eagle Hall every day, it's definitely happening. I think people underestimated the scope of that project, especially with all the effort to preserve the building, including the really cool stained glass. Plus it's the first music venue in Jersey City in probably 70 years so they're breaking some new ground.

It's a brewery, not a bar, so the full name is actually Departed Soles Brewery, which should help clear up any confusion over what it is. Though you can stop in and have a few pints. It's a very cool space, great decor, cheap pints, and the owner Brian is a fun guy to talk to. Our brew club is having our monthly meetings there now and it's the perfect space for us.

I definitely recommend stopping by to check it out, and since Bucket & Bay gelato/cafe is right there, check them out too. I had their chocolate gelato yesterday and it's without a doubt the most chocolate-y chocolate ice cream I've ever had.

Serious answer: because jersey city doesn't have one that's even remotely decent.

Thanks for the answer. And, I get what you are saying. But, I still don't get it. A buffet restaurant strikes me as something most people here would look down upon, given the posts on restaurants and new places. But, somehow, this place, located in a dreary mall, in an inconvenient location for most JC residents, seems to be getting a lot of love and attention.
I'm excited for it. Sometimes I just need to shove ten pounds of assorted world cuisine into my face.

Yo thirstyquaker, how is the quality of their tap system? Do beers taste like they clean the lines frequently...did the beer have that fresh taste with good carbonation? I ask this because all too many beer boas nowadays are servicing sub par drafts due to neglected taps.
I was just passing through so I only had time for one drink before I had to get back to the shop, but it tasted pretty solid. Had a Great Lakes Dortmunder and it was fresh and well carbed, and that's a pretty light beer that would pick up off flavors.

They only have about 10 taps, and they're obviously focusing on craft beer so I imagine they'll have the sense to keep them clean. But then again, I've been to a craft beer bar or two in the area that either have too many lines or too inexperienced staff and end up with kegs that have gone bad or lines that have gotten funky. So I think we'll have to wait a while longer to get the verdict, since that "flavor" takes some time to build up.

Just stopped in a little earlier and it's nice cozy space with a decent beer selection. I really like the back lounge, though I'm not sure if making it smell like an old smoking parlour makes sense. A bit more food than just bar pies would be nice too, but maybe that will come in the future as business picks up. Digging the chess too. The whole place does feel a bit like you're going back in time, it's a great addition to the neighborhood.

Seeing as he's totally lambasted politicians for 15 years, I can't imagine he would ever want to be on the receiving end of that. I imagine he wants to relax for a while, and eventually go into production/directing or that kind of stuff.

I've been inside fairly recently, the most complicated stuff is done, and the restaurants downstairs are looking pretty good. It's a really interesting space because they've preserved a lot of the unique historical aspects, including the flooring, the balcony, the brickwork, and the awesome stained glass. But it's also got some cool state of the art stuff like the floating floor for sound isolation with the downstairs restaurants, and floating walls to protect the old brick walls. Things are definitely moving along, I'm pretty psyched for the space to open.

I don't know about the timeframe because I don't know how fast construction goes, but things have definitely picked up quickly since the permits were approved and the brutal winter ended.

I get a lot more reliability, more frequent rides, more communication, and more distance for my $2.75 Metro fare than I do out of my PATH fare. It's weird how when the PATH was $1.25 per ride, it was more reliable and ran more frequently on more lines than it does today.

Beer-making classes & beer bottle share starting soon

If you're into beer we have a couple things coming up that you might be interested in.

First thing is a bottle share we're hosting in the backyard at our shop. If you've got some weird beer that's not available in NJ, or something special you've been cellaring, bring it along to the bottle share group!

Saturdays @ 3pm - May 23, June 20, July 18, August 15, September 19
http://thirstyquaker.com/summer-bottle-share-group/

Next up is a series of homebrewing classes we're doing at the Hudson County Community College (by Journal Square). We did a series of classes in the Winter that were a lot of fun - you get to brew a beer yourself during the class, and we drink a few commercial and homemade beers as well. Students also get a 10% discount on homebrew supplies. Signups for classes are now done in shop so it's quick and easy.

Sundays 3-6pm - June 21, July 19, August 16, September 20
http://thirstyquaker.com/summer-brewing-classes/

We're also going to do some cider classes when it gets toward apple season, and we may do a gluten-free brewing class with Departed Soles soon.

It's a very nice space, I just wish it were larger (it's about half the size of Maxwell's back room). I saw Pat Byrne's Prove it All Night there a while ago and it was an awesome show, but a bit hard to find seating, so we had to stand around at the back for a while until space opened up. Had tickets to see some bands recently but had to change plans so I still haven't seen a band there yet

Really nice addition to the city, I'm glad they were finally able to open up. And yeah it's BYO so make sure to stop by our shop or call us up for a delivery ;)
