Re: A casino in Jersey City? Venture capitalist wants to make it happen

You guys do realize that motor sports contribute heavily to both noise and air pollution? I've been to Daytona and the Indy 500 more times than I can remember, and you can hear the races for miles from the stadium. And they want to put that thing in a fucking park? The only decent park we have?

There's land between the golf course and the park that is a bunch of warehouses, Camp Liberty and some other misc stuff. That's where I assume they mean, and I would guess they plan knocking down whatever is there. It's off of Morris Pesin Dr. A bit of the park is there along the water but there's space behind that.

I don't think a speedway belongs there, but it would probably fit.

I'd love to see them justify getting rid of all the industrial jobs there for this thing!

One would assume they have an idea of where they are putting things but it is a good question. If you took the whole area just south of the park I think you could fit a speedway but then there wouldn't be much room for a casino. I suppose the footprint of the building doesn't need to be that large and I would guess they mostly just want to punt on parking and say take mass transit, which would obviously not work with that many people.

Just south of the park is the golf course and point liberte. There really isn't much undeveloped land there.

How can you find out if someone's driveway is legal, by the way?

Just curious, how does an individual in a situation like that afford to pay rent, buy food, keep the electricity on? Do you have to work from home somehow?

I realize that nearly no one will accept mattresses (plus, it's five years old), but does anyone have suggestions for a mattress pick up and disposal that won't cost a fortune?

(I'm on the fifth floor of a walk up, so dragging it down the stairs on my own will not be happening.)

Call JCIA and let them know you're putting it out on a regular garbage day. Wrap it up completely with a plastic drop cloth and the regular garbage service will pick it up.

It is obvious dtjcview, you have a vested interest in having Newark Avenue closed, the reason for your negative remarks.

This is ridiculous. If the city commissioned a traffic study, you would be complaining that Fulop was wasting money. The ordinance calls for a trial period before being permanently enacted, which I think is a sufficient alternative. You and the other guy saying you've been here 40 years and knowing that "the traffic gets real bad" does not constitute sufficient evidence for throwing the whole plan in the garbage. I will admit to having a vested interest in the plan. I live and work in Downtown. I own property in Downtown. I do 99% of my shopping, eating, and drinking Downtown, and I think the plan will increase the quality of life here.

I didn't think you had a traffic study. Which streets will they use? Where will they be going? How will morning traffic differ from afternoon?

No, there are 1/2s scattered around the city. Downtown does seem to have the highest concentration of them though.

I won't take any discussion of traffic backups seriously until somebody starts addressing the hordes of people using downtown as a shortcut to the Holland Tunnel when they don't want to wait their turn on the Turnpike. Any other discussion before that is just whining.

Whenever I give the address over the phone and they go "Huh? And a half?" I say "yeah... it's a small house." Nobody has ever laughed, not even once.

I must be a minority in that I rarely have problems with mail and packages. If I do, 99% of the time it went to the neighbor. Anyone using GPS just uses the address without the half and they'll get pretty damn close to where they want to be. I like having a half address.

I've only heard it called basalt, diabase and traprock around here. Bluestone refers to a similar type of rock in Australia/NZ, but refers to a type of sandstone commonly used here for old sidewalk paving.

Basalt is about 8-9 on the Mohs hardness scale. Diamond is 10. Mortar must be softer, as it acts as a sacrificial layer for repeated water intrusion events over time. I think regular portland cement would be just fine.

Most around here are brick or palisades traprock/basalt. Can you upload a pic? You really only have to worry about custom lime/sand mixtures when dealing with old red bricks, especially if they're pre-1900. Traprock can take straight modern cement because of how incredibly tough it is.

LOL... our community hero. Who gave you the right to trespass on someone's property, let alone paint it? That's just the same as tagging it. Start messing with the wrong person's property and then threatening them with assult is likely to get you shot.

This is true. You're out of luck. If everyone in the towers downtown wanted to park on the street, the whole neighborhood would be a parking lot. The parking rule was a condition for allowing the buildings to be built.

Contrast that to the state of Monmouth between Columbus and First. The trees have been gone for a long time, and the sidewalk is still a hot mess.
