Mayor Jeeramiah Heeley's spokesman Joshua Heinie announced today that the Mayor will be back in court again.

"Mayor Heeley remains focused on the important issues facing our city: combating crime, especially out-of-control gang-related activity by Hispanic young ladies, creating jobs in the beverage and addiction treatment industries, and spending money like a drunken sailor because we have an election coming up and no city budget in place.

"Yet some people are trying to distract voters by bringing up issues from the past which no one cares about. While the words came out of Mayor Heeley's own mouth, we hold Steven Fulop and his campaign responsible for these vicious attacks.

"The pressure of fighting this interloper has forced the Mayor to set aside the issues people care most about; imaginary conspiracies, closet Republicans, his close friendship with Barack Obama, his endorsement by Barack Obama, and his six year old picture of Mayor Heeley with Barack Obama.

"Instead, Mayor Heeley has been forced to argue yet again with voters, and remind them of the things they least want to think about; bribery and him naked.

"Because of these vicious self-inflicted smears, Mayor Heeley is forced to once again take legal action. The Heeley campaign will this Monday morning sue the Mayor's penis for defamation of character. The suit will be filed in small claims court. See Exhibit A, below."

"I'm Jerry FUBAR and I approve this message."

Does Healy keep destroying his campaign out of guilt or does he just want to retire?

In one week he's made Fulop's most potent ad a news story and dragged up an old humiliation and given it a new twist.

So Yahoo, doesn't this mean, as any of us who knows right from wrong would know, that when Healy continued the conversation in the diner after Dwak offered a bribe, didn't report it, and didn't direct his administration how to handle it, in effect let it happen, then he himself committed a crime on several counts? Kind of makes you wonder about how he got away with it. As much as I hate to say it out loud as I'm not a fan of our drunken, exhibitionistic Mayor, it looks to me like he was the one who turned them in.

I think it may be as simple as the fact that Healy never touched the money. On camera.

Re: Jersey City election 2013: Healy calls foul on Fulop mail-in ballot applications

The return address on such applications must be the Hudson County Clerk, the clerk's office says in a statement issued this afternoon. The campaign of incumbent Mayor Jerramiah Healy, Fulop's leading rival in the May 14 mayoral race, says Fulop's gambit could result in lost votes for Healy.

What nonsense. There is no law preventing someone from gathering applications and delivering them to the clerk. These are not ballots.

It's hard to imagine how encouraging people to vote by mail would result in lost votes for Healy. Fulop went to the expense and effort of sending people in Ward E applications to vote by mail. Ward E is his base. What possible interest would he have in failing to get the applications to the clerk on time? There is, of course, no way to tell who intends to vote for Healy and Healy voters did not have to use the applications that Fulop distributed as a courtesy. The form is online.

What this effort by Fulop is really about is encouraging more votes from Ward E, not suppressing votes for Healy.

The clerk's diving into this issue by making up rules that don't exist shows he is on Team Healy, which is hardly a surprise. Healy's forces have every incentive to "lose" these applications from Ward E voters or to say they did not arrive on time.

Fulop's team was very shrewd in attempting to protect the voters from machine manipulation by time-stamping the applications and delivering them in person to the clerk.

Yes, it is. I thought it was strange when Healy said Fulop's reach exceeded his grasp (or was it vice versa?) He apparently thinks this means something like "biting off more than you can chew." Ironically, the original quote (?Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp, Or what's a heaven for??) encourages ambition.

He seems to think the job is too big for Fulop. Fulop is a combat marine veteran and former businessman with a Masters in Public Affairs from Columbia and an MBA from NYU. He's served on the City Council for eight years. He's had a far better preparation than Healy had. He's more than ready to take over.

Healy and his lawyers know full well that for a plaintiff who is a candidate in a political campaign, it would be almost impossible to win this suit. He would have to prove not only that the statements were false (tough to prove given that they are true) but also that Fulop knew they were false or acted with reckless disregard for the truth.

This is purely political. Another abuse of the courts.

I wonder who is going to get stuck with the bill this time.

Seemingly oblivious to my presence, I had to ask them to make way three times.
All this at the rush hour peak.
I have also noticed this on Fridays with that market or whatever it is, the stalls are set up so you are forced to walk through a narrow section, presumably in the hope that they will make a sale.
I'm all for improving the cultural life of this city but we have to remember that most people who live here and pay taxes do so because of the close proximity of Manhattan. Free and easy access to the city should not be sacrificed for some small time art events.
I think the front of city hall would make a much better place for this type of thing.

The have medications to help with blocked ambulation.

What a crock. Claiming to be a disinterested voter who pays no attention to politics while pretending to know "behind the scenes stuff." People who read these threads are not stupid.

What a lot of residents of his Ward know about Steve is that he is an unfailingly responsive. To me, that's the exact opposite of "all about Fulop." On the other hand anyone can see that Healy disappears for three-and-a-half years and then announces a lot of plans before an election that don't seem to come to pass after it.

I am glad to see Fulop taking such an active role in reforming the schools. It was a herculean task to wrest control of the Board from the hacks. Steve invested years of political capital and effort. Of course he continues to care how the Board moves forward. The school Board spends as much as all other city agencies combined. It has been a failure. It needs leadership.

As for improper influence, all we have seen is that Steve provided a small number of his legal and disclosed campaign contributors with introductions to members of the School Board. That is the least he can do. I mean that literally. Short of completely ignoring his supporters (which would not bode well for his continued effectiveness), introducing qualified firms to potential clients is the VERY LEAST he could have done. There is no sign he pressured the school board to hire the firms he introduced. They were contenders on the merits.

Compare this situation to Healy's illegal and secret acceptance of $30,000 from a phony real estate developer who wanted to get to the "top of the pile" in terms of the many city approvals he needed. This man was an FBI informant with no actual project. The Mayor insists he did nothing wrong because he was not indicted. But the core of his re-election campaign, his closest political allies and personal friends were indicted and convicted.

Is that the standard we want? Hey--I wasn't indicted, only the closest aides in my campaign were. Mayor Un-indicted Co-Conspirator? Mayor Skate? No thanks.

The deleted post was how Mayor Healy outsmarted and outworked your Stevie. Unlike Councilboy Stevie, MAYOR Healy has a record to run on. He's done a great job in difficult times. He's added police and kept the streets safe. He's held property taxes down. He's overseen great economic development not just downtown but everywhere. And when Sandy hit, who was it that was actually making the city work, protecting lives and property? Not Stevie boy, but MAYOR Healy. And unlike Stevie, He's got a wife and kids and grandkids WHO LIVE IN JERSEY CITY!

Here's how this election is going down. All you do-gooders and dreamers downtown don't know how to run a campaign. You talk youself to death about how terrible our MAYOR is, and still nobody downtown will bother to vote.

MAYOR Healy has built up a lifetime of credibility with the REAL voters of Jersey City. They've got lives and don't bother with all this crap, but they will show up to vote, and send Stevie boy and all you wannabees back home to whereever it is you came from.

I heard a pack of Healy supporters shouting "Stevie-boy!" at the first debate. Perhaps there are places in Jersey City where speaking that way might be effective. This is not one of them. What people are reporting about Healy is quite a change from the first debate, which I attended. Perhaps it was the format (public forum vs. debate), but Healy was well-behaved, for the most part.

If he's losing it on stage, maybe he thinks he's losing at the polls.

As other's have pointed out, it is very hard to take a newbie seriously when he shows up solely to support a candidate in the campaign.

However, if you had anything thoughtful or interesting to contribute, some of us might pay some attention. You don't.

I've heard some Healy supporters at debates and read comments and letters in support of Healy and I've noticed a pattern when it comes to comments about Fulop. They are personal and petty. I don't believe that Fulop is self-centered or arrogant, but I also would not care if he were. I'm looking for someone to run my city, not for someone to have a beer with.

One of the reasons I support Fulop is that I admire him. Perhaps leaving a life of privilege to volunteer for the marines after 9/11 and the dedication and persistence to compete in Ironman triathlons don't impress you. They do impress me. As do the energy and commitment he's brought to representing Ward E. It's refreshing to have a candidate whom I actually admire.

Healy's argument would be much more convincing is he had anything to say besides "totally false." What exactly is not correct about it? Fulop shows the actual videotape. People can judge for themselves what is going on, and if Healy won't offer a detailed response, why shouldn't we rely on our own common sense?

I find the whole thing rather sad and disturbing. The people raising money for the Mayor (referred to as Leona and Jack in the video) were indicted. One is a 76-year-old woman in a federal prison and the other committed suicide shortly after he was indicted.

I don't see how a person of honor could stay in office after that. Chilling.
