Re: 70 & 72 Essex St in Paulus Hook?

I heard it is supposed to be a Bed & Breakfast. This outfit:
http://www.nyc-jc.com/ currently leases some major space in 70 Greene and rents out the apartments as vacation alternatives to hotels. I typically see tons of europeans with luggage, etc. coming and going on my way to/from work. Anyway, 70-72 Essex is supposed to be an expansion of their operations.

I was given this information by one of my neighbors who has her finger on the pulse of Paulus Hook real estate.

It looks like they are doing a nice job with the place though.

Nope... that's most likely his base salary!

I am sure the guys who arrested him are getting the cold shoulder from the other "boys in blue"... I am wondering if he was arrested by the Hudson County Sheriffs department since the Blvd is a county road.

Re: Harbor Casino

Just can't stay away

The "old" Harbor Casino was the last hold out on Warren between Essex and Dudley before they built 126 Dudley. It was a true dive bar and the building itself was barely inhabitable. Rumor had it they served the crabs they caught in the Morris Canal down the block. The owner (who will go nameless) held out and worked a deal with the builder of 126 Dudley. As a result, he had them build him the bar on the corner and the apartments above it. It looks like it is a part of 126 Dudley, but it is a separate legal entity with its own apartment entrances, etc. I think he also got them to "throw in" a condo in 126 as part of the deal. The builder of 126 had to pay him a salary for the time the "old" Harbor Casino was closed during construction. Long story short, it took a loooonnnggggg time before Harbor Casino re-opened... 126 was built and up and running, yet Harbor Casino remained in construction phase. The rumor in the neighborhood was that the original politically connected owner of Harbor Casino used his buddies in city hall to issue multiple "stop work" orders to delay the inevitable opening.

Eventually, the bar opened and the owner leased operations out to some guy... it really struggled to figure out what it wanted to be... a dive or a yuppy bar. I guess business wasn't going so well and the bar was eventually leased about 2 years ago to the guy who also runs the White Star. He made some noticeable improvements to the bar and the quality of the food really improved. He was also more cognizant and respectful of the neighbors nearby and there were less shenanigans out there late night.

Recently, in the last 6 months or so, the owner of the Harbor Casino sold the bar and the apartments above it to the gentleman who owns the White Star. At that point, the name changed and it became the White Star at the Harbor or something like that.

Long post... but that.s the story!

I wouldn't consider any other insurance company. I've been using them for car insurance for 15+ years and condo insurance for 7 years. They are a hassle free company with excellent customer service.

The Bayonne Starfish/Mermaid program has been around for a real long time and is a quality age group swim team.

I do not know anything about the JC Pirhana program.

Stevens Institute in Hoboken also has a really good aquatics program.

St. Peter's College has programs from time to time, but they have never really been consistent with their aquatics program.

Unless you are in immediate danger, there is no need to interact with these street urchins. Ignore them and move along.

I agree that dealing with the police department can sometimes be frustrating.

I don't think Jersey City is the place for you. Try Westfield or Cranford, NJ. They are nice/safe towns. You can rent a place relatively inexpensively and they both have a walkable "downtown" area. It's roughly halfway between NYC and New Brunswick and is on the NJ Transit Raritan Valley line.

I am not sure where you are moving from... but based on your unique criteria it doesn't sound like you will be happy with Jersey City. Granted its not for everyone... but I LOVE it!!!

Thanks for your brilliant advice. I wasn't sure that I had to get your approval before moving anywhere.

Quite frankly, you asked people for input, yet you continue to provide nasty remarks based on the input received. I don't care where you move, nor does anyone else... people took time to respond to your message out of kindness and you respond with jerky comments???

Get lost!

Driving into NYC on a daily basis is insanity. Tolls, gas, parking in NYC will kill your monthly budget. Traffic backups leaving NYC via the Holland Tunnel frequently can be an hour or more.

Focus your search in the Paulus Hook or Hamilton Park neighborhoods downtown.
