While I'm surprised that the EMT and PD has a hard time recognizing decomissioned grenades (I'm not a professional and yet I know what they look like), calling the bomb squad and evacuating the neighborhood isn't what bothers me.

What bothers me is that this guy was taken away in handcuffs to the hospital, and handcuffed to the bed. I know that this is SOP for those under arrest. Was he under arrest? Just what was his status?

If they felt that he was a danger to himself or to others (I believe that's the standard used for detaining psych patients against their will) on what grounds were they making that judgment? And if he was a psych patient taken against his will, why the handcuffs? Is that standard?

This story could have had a MUCH WORSE ending. It's not clear to me that this guy did anything wrong, and yet he was detained.

bobble, thanks for eloquently putting into words part of what i was trying to convey about the handling of the situation.

if slacky had been a dangerous, agitated individual, all of a sudden seeing 12+ first responders could have probably had a much worse consequence if it had been a grenade with the possibility of detonation.

+1 to robotjustin.
sometimes i think that JC has a forcefield which rejects basic ontology and e-prime language and instead wallows in the back and forths and absolutes of belief which keep us mired within a rather corrupt government. but, its also sort of like living in an rather rundown estate where the nanny is busier getting herself diddled by the butler than paying attention to your transgressions manifesting as finger-painting on the parlor walls.

It turns out that the grenades were just paperweights that the man bought at a yard sale.

'YARD SALE'!!!

How reassuring is that - no guarantee of it being an inactive grenade.

10/10 to the cops and ems dudes - and thats a lot coming from me.

besides the fact that there was a huge hole going thru the grenade.

slacky, its sucks that you had to go thru all of that.

unfortunately, welcome to the us. some of us just aren't very bright, and fear and hate anything that is different than what they are used to seeing.

i truly hope that you are able to be recompensed for you time and suffering, and the very idea that a first responder would treat an anxiety sufferer with compounding his panic is horrible, and i hope that he loses his job, which probably consists of hanging out in the dunkin donuts most of the day.

add this to the neverending list of the incompetance of the JCPD.

you should have bars on the windows facing the streets, safety latches so that the windows cannot open from the outside more than 1/4" inch and exits in the front and back.

are you having trouble paying your rent?

most landlords are flexible, especially with the holiday weekend. i know that i send my rent into my landlord's office. he probably won't see or think about the check until tuesday or wednesday, then wont deposit until he has the majority of the checks (he owns about 25+ properties)

anway, what i am getting at here is communication is the best policy. if you have to be a few days late, why not talk to the landlord?

most seem to use the late fee as a last resort, and not a fast rule. better that you can consistantly pay your rent timely, than they squeeze you for that extra amount, possibly messing up your entire budget....

now that that is out of the way, please clarify why anyone who lives in the city would leave ANY valuables, much less a PURSE and WALLET filled with ID and goodies in their car for any amount of time???

hopefully something is recovered, but it sounds like you have some reliable scam artists who nabbed your stuff.

good luck.

please dont compare sawadee to WF. its like comparing taqueria and fresh tortillas, if you get my drift.

at the very least sawadee uses copious amounts of fresh lightly cooked veggies, in their dishes, not frozen overcooked lifeless wannabe veggies.

and their pad thai is not a fake pink color like the crap from WF.

no, sawadee isnt perfect, but for delivery and staying close to home, they get my vote!

living in paulus hook you have the option of eating out alot, fresh direct or shopping at the over priced deli. otherwise you can walk to the produce shops on grove or the shoprite on marin. bring your "old lady cart".

downtown pharmacy in liberty towers is not so bad as far as selection and price for non-produce type foods.

there are no convenient laundromats, either.

otherwise, paulus hook is as idyllic of an urban nabe as you are bound to encounter.

I am further confused. I thought us do-gooder JC folks were supposed to hate abatements because in the end the taxpayers get screwed. But if the city actually gets MORE money from PILOTs than from regular taxes, why are we against them?

Help.

ya know that real ugly building that you see when you get out of the grove street path station?

the city is also supposed to only employ union workers on abated builds and give us basic public utilities, so in theory they are good, in practice, no.

what is also great, rush hour monday afternoon, while most of the cars and buses are off the road there are still blockades on center and merseles at montgomery and columbus.

there are no police to direct traffic leaving 3 lanes of traffic to try to weave between the bollards in 3 separate areas, and of course the flooding in the street had subsided by that time...

a funtime was had by all...

not.

Liberty National Golf course is on PRIVATE land.

Totally two different projects, honey.

The idea of a public Golf Course on LSP land in the 90s was killed by public opposition.

Nothing was sold.

The developer of of Liberty National Golf Club in CAVEN POINT (not LSP) is Applied Companies which bought the private land from then-bankrupt Port Liberte. Then they brought billionaire Paul Fireman on board and built the private Liberty National Golf Course on land that WAS NEVER an LSP land.

NEVER.

Again - get your facts straight, or better yet, cure your hangover, coz you're not making any sense.

oh, so i guess they set aside space for the hudson county walkway then...

I don't know the answer, but having some stats regarding this matter would be great.

Without such data both Healy and the open space proponents are just full of hot air.

LSP is Liberty STATE Park. it is run by the state parks commission.

will people stop calling this a city park, although with the non working fountains and dirty bathrooms, it does seem an awful lot like a city park.

Where did I say it was a CITY park?

I said it's within the city limits, and it's 1,100 acre green area.

Further, LSP being within city limits makes access to it very easy for JC residents.

While obviously a STATE park (duh, missa - thanks for pointing out that revelation to me), it is still 1,100 acres of green space within the city limits, so aren't all these calls about JC having very little green spaces a bit disingenuous?

regardless of my revelation mr. chuckles, this is the the hudson county green space map.

compared to the amount of people who would like to see projects like the embankment become a reality our council people and city government are doing a crappy job of representing those of us who would like to see more open space available to the public.

its not about the state park not being enough, as much as it is about conserving open space for the future especially in the midst of rampant development.

LSP is 1,100 acres of green space located in JC.

Apparently you and the embankment park supporters don't take that fact into consideration when lobbying for the embankment on the platform of "lack of green space in JC".

How convenient.

where did I say that i wanted the embankment because we lacked green space in jc?

please find the post. i would like to see it.

its far more convienent to lump my words in with someone elses when you dont clearly know my position on the issue.

I heard a rumor that Mia Scanga is promoting Gerald McCann for BOE (i call this a rumor because i cannot watch this program on the web because there is no audio). I find this interesting, as on the Talking Politics website listing convicted politicians of Hudson County he is not to be found.

Was he never convicted or had pled guilty in the past for any of the crimes he has committed?

I thought he was a convicted felon?

Is the Jersey Journal lying or was he accidentally left from the Talking Politics website?

if you feel strongly about having trees around, you could buy a tree for the street you live on, provided that you will care for the tree. where ever you see an empty "block" of sidewalk, there is an opportunity for a tree to grow.
