Re: Call for Choreographers NimbusPRESENTS: OFFLINE Thrive Application Deadline August 4th!

Guest Curator Arthur Aviles (Artistic Director of BAAD! The Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance and formerly of Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company will select 2 resident choreographers and 6 choreographers for performance only to present their work at Nimbus' Theater in Downtown Jersey City on Saturday, October 5, 2019.

The acclaimed activist and writer Audre Lorde self identified as a ?black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet? and dedicated her life to confronting and addressing injustices of racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia. BAAD! The Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance has taken inspiration from Lorde for NimbusPRESENTS: OFFLINE, and we hold the mission of presenting work that empowers women, people of color, and the LGBTQ community. We recognize that the stage is a powerful platform to shine a light on the Jersey City community, make visible the invisible, and recognize the multitudinous ways of existing in this world.

We recognize the change that results from programs that privilege underrepresented voices, bodies, ideas, cultures ? the vital power of visibility. Being visible, vocal and present expands the narratives of who we are as women, people of color, and queer people, and the change is seen from the passing of Marriage Equality, to the LGBTQ and disability-inclusive curriculum bill, to a young person feeling inspired to shed the shame of being queer or poor and create a work that expresses their self-value.

Artists persistently create in the realm of possibilities and offer their communities and the world ways to live, to think, to co-exist and thrive. Though we have made progress it remains urgent to continue to respond to a pressing need in the world, in the Bronx, in New Jersey, in Jersey City, especially when oppressive rhetoric by national leaders regains a platform.

NimbusPRESENTS: OFFLINE offers a welcoming space to create, explore, experiment, consume, and share creative content that empowers women, people of color, and the LGBTQ community. Empowerment comes in many different forms and so too does the work we make to communicate ideas. Folkloric to avant garde to street dance and all forms are encouraged and welcome. Choreographers who identify as people of color, queer, and all or no genders are encouraged to apply.

Proposed works should be no longer than 10 minutes. Priority will be given to new works and works in progress.

All choreographers will receive a 45 minute technical rehearsal.

Selected resident choreographers must sell 15 tickets to the performances. Choreographers selected for the produced performances are required to sell 10 tickets each.

Resident choreographers receive 30 hours of studio time for rehearsals and are required to do one work-in-progress showing prior to the performance for feedback from the curator, Nimbus artistic staff, and invited audience.

(Note about space use for resident choreographers: studio times are primarily available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings with some additional weeknight availability.)

Applicants will be assessed on the following criteria:
Demonstrated history of work
Project proposal quality
Project feasibility

Choreographers of all backgrounds encouraged to apply.

Application Deadline: August 4th
Application Fee:$15/submission, due upon application
Please contact programs@nimbusdanceworks.org with questions or concerns

NimbusPresents: OFFLINE, now entering its fourth year, is a series of curated performances presenting the work of emerging to mid-career choreographers from the New Jersey/New York area. Designed to address the limited amount of space available for the creation and performance of new dance in Jersey City, OFFLINE provides audiences and artists the opportunity to have intimate and meaningful exchanges.

In 2005, a group of artists came together in Jersey City to create innovative dance that impacts the community. Rehearsing in a space at Grace Church Van Vorst, Nimbus Dance was formed, bringing the arts to a city with little arts support. Seven years later, the School of Nimbus opened with eighteen students.

Everyday, young students developed perseverance, grit, confidence, self-expression, and creativity. They found friends among each other. They received outstanding dance training in ballet, modern, and performance. And in the local Jersey City school district, Nimbus Dance began delivering dance education during the school day. Students were given the unusual opportunity to stand up from their desks, discover new ways of moving, flex their creative-thinking brains, develop problem-solving skills, and find new relationships with their classmates.

Today, the number of youth impacted through Nimbus Dance has reached 4000. $40,000 in scholarships are distributed per year to students so that they can study dance with Nimbus Dance. The number of performances per year has blossomed to fifty in New Jersey, New York, and around the country. Generous supporters have recognized Nimbus? work with the community and aided in the growth of the organization. But questions kept arising:

In what space can Nimbus Dance best serve the community?
In what space can Nimbus Dance continue to change the lives of the young and old through the arts?

In winter 2020, that space will open: The Nimbus Arts Center at the Lively. A state-of-the-art facility in Jersey City?s Powerhouse Arts District, the 15,500 sq. ft. center will feature a black box theater, dance studios, administrative offices, and art gallery space. However, we need your help.

To help make this a reality, and to help change the arts landscape of Hudson County, please donate to our Capital Campaign.

Thank you!

Help Nimbus Honor and Permanently Commemorate Meredith Lippman

For three decades, Meredith Lippman (1952-2015) dedicated herself to the arts of Jersey City and Hudson County. She was admired for her artistic curiosity and willingness to learn. As a teacher, advocate, mentor, and unifier in the arts community, Meredith?s impact was widespread on local arts organizations and individual artists. She served as President of Pro Arts Jersey City, played a key role at the Hudson County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs as Program Development Specialist, and was instrumental in finding Nimbus Dance Works? first full-time home studio.

Nimbus Dance Works is developing a new arts center in Jersey City that will serve performing artists, visual artists and youth (more details to be released publicly soon). A long time supporter of Nimbus, Meredith Lippman?s estate is generously donating the proceeds of the sale of Ms. Lippman?s paintings to Nimbus in support of the new arts center.

In recognition of Meredith?s lifelong contributions to the arts in Jersey City, Nimbus
hopes to commemorate Meredith by permanently naming a gallery space for her at the new arts center. In order to make this possible, we must raise $30,000 in Meredith's name. Please consider purchasing one of the remaining paintings (currently on view in our gallery) or make a donation to honor and commemorate Meredith Lippman in the community she served so selflessly.

To view available paintings, please click HERE.

Ms. Lippman's work will be exhibited in the Nimbus Gallery from September 7- 28

Gallery Hours:
Monday-Thursday: 4-8pm
Friday: 4-7:30p
