Just to clarify I wasn't suggesting it be torn down. Actually, I really like the idea of it being an elevated park. I was just agreeing that in its current state I don't believe it adds any "charm" to the neighborhood.

I'm with you. I do see it's potential and appreciate it as a relic of the past, but in it's current state that you described it's ugly. Everything that's been done to it has made it ugly- it's unkempt, trashed and covered with crappy graffiti in certain parts.

Yeah, we used to love it too. I don't mean to knock it and hope that I did just catch a few bad days. I think it may have been very hot days when we got the bad bread. It used to be great, as was the pizza. I'll try again though.

Still no excuse for the $3 slice! I think most places in the city are cheaper than that. I think its a better deal to just get a pie there.

Do people want basketball and tennis courts for active recreation? Sure!

Do people want space allocated to a children's playground for kids to play in? Sure!

Do people want a dog run? Well, um, let's not get into that one.

That last statement was kind of odd. Seems based on the initial community response it was "Sure!" as well. From the report:

Ballot 4, Question 3 (see page 96 of report)
Would you like an enclosed dog run (where dogs can run off-leash) in Hamilton Park?
A. Yes, I would like an enclosed dog run. (235 votes; 89%)
B. No, I do not want an enclosed dog run. (29 votes; 11%)

Ballot 4, Question 4 (see page 98 of report)
If a dog run is adopted in Hamilton Park, what overall physical size do you think is most appropriate?
(Note that the tennis court is only used as a reference for size, a dog run would not replace the tennis courts, nor will it necessarily be the same shape. Location of a dog run, similar to the location of all amenities in the park, is subject to the City?s overall Master Plan design.)
A. Roughly the size of one tennis court. (62 votes; 24%)
B. Roughly the size of two tennis courts. (113 votes; 44%)
C. Roughly the size of three tennis courts. (79 votes; 31%)

Is this a typo or can one buy street heroin for about $11 a bag? I plead ignorance.

From what I remember of my heroin using friends in college, yes, you can definitely get a $10 bag of heroin on the street. What a bargain!

I'm editing this because I'm kind of embarassed for answering the question. I've personally never used heroin, and the fact that a couple of friends of mine in college got turned onto it is actually very sad and tragic. I didn't mean to state it so lightly above.

What about a memorial for the troops that died in Dessert Storm.
I understand that this is close to home, but isn't there a memorial for 9/11 located between the ferry terminal and Exchange Place (PATH) already or is Cityhall more interested in making the proposed memorial a tourist attraction?

It's a 'touchy subject' but JC could spend the money on its infrastructure and social issues - hang on, where is the money coming from - if someone is giving it to Cityhall as a donation then build the thing, but I heard JC was close to being pennyless.

I believe the memorial at Exchange Place is a city memorial. Liberty State Park is a state park and the memorial is a memorial for the 700 or so people from all over the state who died that day.

The funding I believe is a combination of state funds and private donations

There are serious consequences to not having "affordable" housing in a modern urban city. They're not talking about building housing projects next to your brownstone. How are you going to have a community if your firemen and teachers can't afford to live here?

The day I find myself surrounded by only elitist snobs like a couple of the posters on this thread is the day I'll gladly move to the Midwest as well.

That's a ridiculously high percentage, but that would bump you up to $975 for, I assume, a 1 BR. Unfortunately, I suspect that's probably about market rate. Not sure about the legalities.

Rents will continue to go up in the area. Question is, will people pay them. Or will they just move to other parts of JC, Union City, Weehawken, or parts of Newark, etc.

For any fellow Food Network nerds out there, there was an episode of "Boy Meets Grill" on Cuban food where Bobby Flay was in town and went to La Nueva Isla and Hard Grove, and the camera followed him walking on Grove St. between places. And of course didn't "Roker on the Road" go to Melt a couple years back?

Just saw him on Grove across from City Hall. At least I think it was "the" downtown pimp. He certainly looked pimplike, especially because he was black. Jokes. He was less pimped out than I would have liked for my first sighting of him- all black suit and coat but with a red stripe on his black fedora of course. And a cool pair of shades. He just looked like a cool cat. As Joe Jackson said, you gotta look sharp.

I agree with Mouse, I really think they need to start having crackdowns on the drivers in JC. I really have honestly never seen anything like the driving around here. Its like the wild west. It would almost be funny how lawless it is if it weren't risking the safety of others. From cabs blatantly running red lights to rolling stops to lefts on red to cars flying down 25 mph residential streets... Its out of control. I'm not some grandma complaining here either. I'm familiar with urban and aggressive driving, grew up in NJ, have a touch of the road rage, but there's nothing like the horrible drivers here.

I have to think that its the fact that people know that they can get away with anything so they keep pushing it a bit further. To some extent people from out of town may just be confused with the lack of visibility and consistency of stop signs, but I don't think that's the major problem here.

And in a neighborhood magazine, where 50 percent of the people reading it are likely to know of him in some capacity.

well its true- its a long fluffy article about development in downtown jersey city and i read it in the most recent "Discover Your Neighborhood" guide. i think it was somewhat objective and attempted to just document the change in the area and wasn't clearly saying whether or not it was all for the better, but in the context of the guide its obvious that its the kind of thing that's supposed to highlight the renaissance and attract investors. i don't know who puts out this guide, but I recall the Lefrak organization getting some thanks and praise in the same guide. the article in question was written by Tris McCall and his name WAS attached to it.

I grabbed a copy of it in the Taqueria. I assume they still have a bunch.

Funny, I was just talking to someone who grew up in Newark and still lives there, and says the real estate there is soaring (relative term). Seriously, hard as that may be to believe to anyone who grew up around here. And Metro Homes, the place that's partnering with Trump in JC, is building this monstrous... neighborhood, really, in Newark. Things are just insane. I stand corrected. I just looked it up. I'm not familiar with that fable. OK, so he called him chicken little and not chicken. Its still pretty ridiculous. He's mocking his concern over crime in the area. I think his other comment about having the GA go stand in front of his house was kind of implying he's a chicken. Either way, the guy is the chief of police and he's resorting to namecalling. I thought Fulop's refusal to stoop to that level in return was respectable. Someone with my level of maturity might have called him Chief Robert Poopypants in response.

Agreed! It was ridiculous and childish, and didn't make sense. Now we call people "chicken" if they're worried about crime in their neighborhood? or, more accurately, expressing the concerns of their constituency about crime in the neighborhood? Almost funny if it wasn't the chief of police himself saying it. What an idiot.
