Re: Jersey City cop fatally shoots dog after it lunges at him, prosecutor says

I agree, Bodhipooh. And I say that as a pit owner and an animal lover. I'm sure if a police officer busted down my door, my dog would lunge at him, and she might even be a real threat. I'm not sure, and hopefully I'll never have to find out. But I'm not sure what else an officer can do in that situation. I also agree with dtjcview that it seems police response is rather one-dimensional, but I really don't know what else they can do when a dog is lunging at them. They could be maimed or killed in a matter of seconds. If she was really crying out for help and that's what caused the officer to break down the door, then I can't fault him.
The really sad part, if this was an abusive situation, is the dog probably WAS trying to protect her.

This isn't easily accessible to downtown, but has anyone been to The Wood Pit? http://www.thewoodpit.com/
I went once and really liked it. I smelled like wood smoke all day. Would love to hear what others think of it.

I was really excited to try this place. Went by on Saturday and it was PACKED, which is a great thing, but there was no seating available so I ended up leaving. Very nice person greeted us at the front, explained there was no seating but said we were welcome to stand at the bar, gave us menus to peruse. One weird thing though, there was an overwhelming smell of mothballs in there. Did anyone else notice that? I'm hoping it was a patron who just took their entire wardrobe out of storage or something, and and not part of the intended ambiance. Granted, I have a pretty sensitive nose, but it was really strong.

In any event, I'm excited to go back at a less busy time. Hopefully the mothball smell won't be there.

It certainly doesn't protect all pets from all forms of abuse. What it does is help people avoid buying pets from breeders with bad reputations or from "puppy mill" breeders who are trying to pass off their puppies as being from a reputable breeder. I think they are hoping people will use this to research the breeder and buy dogs from the ones with good reputations who do it right as opposed to buying from people who over-breed dogs and keep them in horrible conditions (or breed dogs with genetic problems, diseases, etc.).

It's kind of like buying a conflict-free diamond. Maybe the diamond wasn't mined by slaves or children or at the threat of torture, but somebody still had to mine it. It's a significant if not all-encompassing improvement.

Jerseymom, thanks for the tip about the store around the corner.

I love this place, especially their baba ghanoush. My boyfriend, who is usually less than enthusiastic about fish, says this is the best fish he's ever had.
Also try the Afghan kebab place a little closer to JSQ on the other side of JFK. Also delicious, and alcohol is not allowed there either.

Well yes. But it wouldn't have been 'road rage' ;)

Ha! True. And I agree, assaulting someone is not a logical response to crowded streets or lack of parking. Or being "cutoff" while walking.

Their chilaquiles are really delicious. And their tacos. Actually, everything I've had there is good. They have this dish called enfrijoladas that's basically enchiladas with a black bean sauce. it's awesome. I don't know if it's authentic or not, but I also don't care
I've been meaning to try those corn masa quesadillas! Next time...

Here's an article about them I found recently if anyone is interested in learning more:

I have a ridiculous question about the $5,000 pledge level. I'm just curious, it says:

"You and your best buddy, or significant other, or some random person you found on the street: come eat with us, for 5 years. And order anything you want, really. Shirts and hats as well."

How often for five years? On every full moon? Thanks.

PSEG Meter Reading
#46
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Has anyone had a problem getting PSEG to actually come to your place and read your meter? Today is the second time I've had to have someone sit at home all day waiting for them, and they just don't show up. I've called them about this several times and they are totally unhelpful just claiming that someone did come.

I don't care if they estimate my bill, but they insist on taking an actual reading at least once per year. I'm happy to have them do it, but they just never come. Any experiences you've had would be much appreciated.

There were fights like this all the time - at least once a month -- in my school. Was it normal? Yes. Was it ok? No, of course not. But that was reality. I didn't live in a city, I lived in a relatively small town on the west coast, and this was over 20 years ago. I'm not saying nothing should be done about it or that it's acceptable or sane, but it is reality for a lot of us and not all that shocking.

If a New Jersey company requires drug testing for employees and bases hiring/retention decisions on positive tests for marijuana (they don't hire you/you get fired for a positive test)- does that go away or become an illegal hiring practice if marijuana is legalized in the state?

JerseyMom,

I don't know for sure, but I think it depends. I'm originally from Washington state, where recreational marijuana was also just legalized, and a relative of mine works for the Department of Corrections there. They still must pass periodic drug tests as a condition of employment regardless of marijuana legalization. They even had a special meeting to tell everyone at DOC that they still had to pass tests for marijuana use. Not sure it it's because it's a state agency or just up to the discretion of the employer, but that's how it's playing out there, at least for now.

There are also breed-specific rescues you can look into. If you really want a Boston terrier, just google "boston terrier rescue nj" and you'll get many options. For example:

All the women I know who have a preference for men of a certain height (or income bracket, or religion, or whatever) are single and have been for a long time.

This is just my opinion (so who cares) but I personally feel that anyone who isn't open to dating an entire category of men (or women) based on a physical attribute isn't really interested in having a relationship.

BTW, I love short men. Maybe that's why I feel at home in JC.

That's really strange. My registration expires in December and I received a renewal notice via USPS a few weeks ago and renewed online. And the car was originally registered in JC at the office on Summit that you mentioned.

I just noticed you said you found the cat a home. In that case, you won't want to use the spay neutering initiative because they will "tip" the ear (cut a little piece off so that trap/neuter/return folks know that cat has been neutered). But the feral cat initiative people can point you in the right direction.

If you have your own transportation, you can get it done here for about $90
http://www.pfaonline.org/spay-neuter/services-fees/
If you don't have transportation, someone at the feral cat initiative can probably help arrange it for you.
