Mayor's Son Sued After Beating in Jersey City
By KEVIN KOENINGER JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CN) - Two drunken Jersey City police detectives and the mayor's son beat a man so badly he suffers from seizures, developed a brain tumor and lost his job, the man claims in court. Hector Mejias sued the Jersey City, Healy's Tavern, Jeremiah Healy Jr., the Jersey City Police Department, several police officers and Dets. Chris Heger and Mark D'Ambrosio, in Hudson County Superior Court. Mejias claims he was driving past Healy's Tavern on Sep. 29, 2012 when he saw three men beating a man in the middle of the street. He says in the lawsuit that all three men "appeared to be highly intoxicated." Defendant Healy, the mayor's son, owns and operates Healy's Tavern, Mejias says in the July 16 complaint. Mejias claims that he stopped, told the assailants they would kill the man unless they stopped, and that he was going to call the police on his cell phone, when "the men identified themselves as police." The lawsuit continues: "The three men then started to approach plaintiff aggressively and appeared to be highly intoxicated. "As the men were approaching plaintiff, plaintiff attempted to flee by getting into his vehicle. "When plaintiff entered his vehicle, the three men opened the car door and started punching plaintiff violently in the head. "In self-defense, plaintiff bit the hand of one of the assailants. "Although plaintiff was able to bite the hand of one of his assailants, plaintiff was forcibly removed from the vehicle whereby the three individuals continued to beat him and kick him violently." Mejias says police arrived soon and arrested him on a charge of aggravated assault, though the men who beat him and the other man were not arrested or charged. "From police reports and media articles, plaintiff learned that the three individuals who beat him were Jeremiah Healy, the son of the mayor of Jersey City and the owner of Healy's Tavern, Detective Chris Heger and Detective Mark D'Ambrosio," the complaint states. Mejias claims that the police defendants covered up the incident by filing false reports. A grand jury found that the officers had no probable cause to arrest Mejias, according to the complaint. Mejias says he suffered permanent brain damage from the beating, now suffers from seizures and has developed a brain tumor that will require surgery. He says he is "permanently disabled and cannot function without numerous medications to control his seizures and other ailments that did not exist prior to the beating." Mejias says that before the beating he was commercial truck driver, but because of his brain injury and seizures and the need to take medication, his commercial driver's license was revoked. He seeks punitive damages for constitutional violations, negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress. He is represented by Mario Blanch of West New York, N.J. Courthouse News Service

Sorry, a little off topic,
When I was a kid, around 1962 or 1963, sometimes on early summer evenings, my mom would take me with her to window shop on Newark Avenue.(back then we just called it ?The Avenue?) Though we would leave home after the stores closing times, it didn't matter as none of the stores had gates on them. There was a furniture store, called Grays (where K9dergarten Dog Care is today) its entrance door was set way back from the sidewalk, with most of its furniture on display behind large windows on both sides of a terrazzo walk. There was a great echo as you got close to the door, loved yelling and hearing my voice echoing off the display windows. I think there were decent stores like Zampella's & Waldstein's for men's clothing, and other stores for women. But there were also bargain stores such as John's, Diskay's and the Wonder Store. There was even a movie theater, called the Palace (where the parking lot is next to Palace Drugs) I don't remember what mom was looking for, maybe a dress or just some exercise, but there always seem to other people strolling the avenue. After the 1964 riots, the gates went up, long established stores started closing, stayed that way for a long time, but it is getting better, much better in the last few years.

There is a relatively new Australian investment fund which has been buying residential property in Hudson County, mostly in Jersey City.
The fund is only open to Australians. It is call "US Masters Residential Property Fund" http://www.usmastersresidential.com.au/ Using the Tax1 website, I found they currently owned about 175 properties in JC. http://tax1.co.monmouth.nj.us/cgi-bin ... &out_type=0&district=0906 I don't know if this is good or bad for our city? Do any JCListers who live in any of their properties have any comments?

If you ever cancel your ez-pass account and mail your transponder back to the issuing agency, before you put it into the envelope make sure you first place it into the mylar "no-read" bag you received when you were first issued the transponder.
Otherwise, you will be charged ever time the USPS or the courier's truck passes a toll booth. I got charged for the NJ Turnpike, GW Bridge, Vz-Narrows Bridge as the transponder travel via USPS truck from Jersey City to Staten Island. NY ez-pass will not close your account until they receive the transponder. I had a delivery confirmation receipt and they reversed all the charges. In hindsight, it is so obvious that I should have put the transponder into the "no-read" bag, but I just didn't think of it.

Check your credit rating. I'm not on the side of big banks and I don't know you, but in 2 minutes I looked up your account on the Jersey City - Online Tax Inquiry and saw that in the last 4 years your real estate taxes were paid late 14 times and on time only 2 times. If I could do this, I'm sure the bank is also looking.

I don't know if it would violate the first amendment, but I wish the city would pass a law to ban the placement of advertisements or notices on automobiles parked on public streets.
The litter is terrible, you used to have an ad placed on your car a couple of times a month, now it's 3 to 4 times a week. The worst is when it rains and the ad is glued to your windshield, you need a razor blade to get it off.

You might want to wait a couple of weeks before you plant anything except pansies.
According to Dave's Garden.com, we can still have a frost. First and last freeze/frost dates for Jersey City, NJ 07302 Each winter, on average, your risk of frost is from October 20 through April 18. Almost certainly, however, you will receive frost from November 1 through April 7. You are almost guaranteed that you will not get frost from April 29 through October 6

Another incident, perhaps the same guy
A masked carjacker robbed a 2012 Mercedes-Benz at gunpoint Monday night in Jersey City, police said. But when the victim asked for his dog, which was in the front seat, the carjacker gave him his pooch, reports said. The vehicle's owner, a 50-year-old city resident, said he was in his vehicle at Pavonia Avenue and Washington Boulevard at 8:40 p.m. when a man wearing a ski mask approached the SUV wielding a handgun, reports said. The car robber barked "Get the (expletive) out of the car or I'll shoot you," the victim told cops. The victim said that when he opened his car door, the carjacker grabbed him and pushed him to the pavement, reports said. The victim then pleaded for robber not to shoot him and to let him have his dog, which was seated in the front seat. The carjacker then handed the man the dog, according to police reports. The carjacker drove away in the vehicle and the victim refused medical attention at the scene, reports said. The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information about this incident should contact the Jersey City Detective Bureau at (201) 547-JAIL. http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... y_carjacker_lets_vic.html
