Possible. My first visit was 1994, and I was not their first customer. Best non-Italian Italian bakery in town.

You expect sleaze out of these guys. But they can't even skirt the rules the right way.

The Hague Machine built the Medical Center, kept the streets clean, and delivered the turkeys at Thanksgiving. The Healy Machine can't seem to do anything right.

I'd say they're out of gas, but every time they speak disproves that theory.

Thinking of some of the food-related threads, it's time to resurrect this thing...

While you can now get some very fine pizza in Jersey City. There is one place that stands out from the pack.

Elio's Bakery. I know you'll never find it. It's way down on Westside Avenue by Virgina.

And even if you find it, you may not get their pizza. Try going mid-morning. But it is pizza. Flavorful, lots of oil, old-style Italian bakery pie. If you get lucky you can get it straight from the oven. Nearly divine!

You probably will not get your ballot on time. Call the County Clerk, Division of Elections (201-369-3470 option 6)) and ask them how to handle it. Once the ballot is finalized you should be able to vote "by mail" in person at the County offices.

Isn't that precious!

Dan is so unlike a traditional politician that he wants potential voters to come to him!

That's pretty courageous. A lot of folks with a "plan for moving Ward E forward," wouldn't rely on Ward E beating a path to their door, but would present their plan any time and any place they had a chance.

A lot of folks who wanted to "help with addressing Downtown constituent needs" wouldn't hang out their shingle proclaiming "The Doctor Is In" and wait for needs to come to them. Instead they would be would be out finding problems, finding people in need, and helping them right where the problem is.

Sounds kinda like what those crazy upstart Sandy Recovery people did. It's a real pity none of them want to step up to help move Ward E forward...

I'm detecting a pattern here. Jerramiah Healy's lack of accomplishment causes his backers and spokespeople to gripe when other people reference their own real accomplishments.

Candice Osborne helped start the biggest grassroots Sandy recovery effort in New Jersey. And now Dan's fans can't stand the fact that she stepped up in a big way. They want you to believe her heroism is somehow a character flaw.

UPDATE: 6:30 p.m. -- Healy campaign spokesman Joshua Henne slammed Fulop's swimming ad as self-centered in a statement released Tuesday evening.

After 9/11 Steve Fulop quit his job on Wall Street to serve his country in the Marine Corps. After a deployment in Iraq, he returned to serve his community as an elected representative. I'm sure Healy would prefer to run against a sleazeball. I'm sure Healy would prefer to run against the phony stories he tells about Fulop. But what does it say about you, Mr. Mayor, that your official spokesman can't help foaming at the mouth when Fulop tells his real story?

I can't wait for the Jerry Healy ad which tells how he fought on the shores of Bradley Beach (all the more impressive since he had been hit by multiple beers). Or the Dan Levin ad which tells how he... what exactly has he done again?

Mayor Jerramiah Healy, during his closing remarks to his supporters: "Get out to vote so that, as Jeff Dublin said, Jersey City can remain for Jersey City, not some newcomers, some interlopers who don't know the city, don't care about the city, and want to use the city for their own personal ambitions."

Note how Mr. Levin completely avoids responding to the substance of Fulop's anti-crime plan, and goes straight to defend Healy's record. Why would he want to do that???

Fulop is talking about a pretty comprehensive way of revitalizing the police department, starting with more accountability at the top, and focused at getting more police in the community.

Critique the plan, Dan. I'm sure there's some reason why Mayor Healy hasn't tried any of the things Steve Fulop says should be done and that he will do.

But of course you and Healy prefer to change the subject. Otherwise people might compare Healy's dismal record with Fulop's fresh set of ideas.

(By the way, DanL, reminding people how much Healy raised taxes might not be exactly on-message.)

The problem is not mine, it's Dan's. The "Where's Dan?" picture is illustrative.

1) If Levin "skipped the Healy bull session," it indicates he's not really working hard. If he was, he'd be using his endorsement to get the support he needs from his new team (Healy) in order to win his seat. You know, the major rationale for his walk in the park with Jerry.

2) If they didn't bother to invite him, it indicates either that they don't trust him, or don't respect him. Probably both. And consequently they are using him to get what they want without giving him squat.

Neither alternative bodes well for Dan's ability to function as a Councilman.

BTW, I'd love to hear from DanL exactly what advantages he's getting as a valued member of the Healy Team. How are they helping him win his election and prepare to be Councilman of Ward E? I'll wager he hasn't got much more from them than the vain hope of getting a few HCDeadO voters.

Dan is still Dan... and that's the problem. Dan is a good guy with good ideas, but weak on being able to get them done. How many of these great ideas has Mayor Healy championed since Dan has joined Team Healy?

Dan's got an even bigger problem. Steve is still Steve. Even Dan's supporters' imaginative distortions of history can't hide Steve Fulop's record of accomplishment. And how has Steve done this? By doing something Dan has been unable to do - building a team and winning over former opponents.

The 8-1 against votes of Fulop's first Council term have turned into 5-4 winning votes. Now, instead of being voted down by Team Healy, Steve's reform proposals have to be vetoed by an increasingly isolated Jerramiah Healy.

Joining a ticket is not only a political judgment, it is a statement to the voters about who you stand with. Supporting a stumbling, crumbling, patronage-as-usual Mayor is a clear statement that you don't get what Jersey City needs and how to move us forward.

Re: Dan Levin in talks to run with Healy

@blogcityblog, I'm not hearing people say that Dan would go back on everything he's stood for. Corruption - using the word loosely - is often more subtle than that. The problem for Dan is that when he makes such an abrupt, self-serving political about-face, it's reasonable to wonder what kind of line he'll draw on the next issue.

Someone already suggested that Dan's silence on the Liberty Harbor North zoning change was one of those places where Dan's newly discovered allegiance to Healy is causing him to draw a new line. That was the kind of political donation-inducing developer giveaway that the old Dan Levin - or anyone looking out for downtown residents and Jersey City taxpayers - would have been all over.

Is it his policies or his principles which are "evolving" to adapt to his new, Healy-led circumstances?

But just you wait. I'm sure that sometime in the campaign, Dan and Jerry will pick some nice safe issues for Independent Dan to take an opposing stance. It will make a nice show.

But until Dan actually bites the hand that is now feeding him, everybody should wonder just where Dan's new normal will be.

Isn't it already clear that Levin doesn't have the clout to win? That's why he's gambling that the money and votes he gets from Healy will finally put him over the top for something.

He's also hoping - vainly, I think - that this political deal won't cost him too many of his former supporters. I'm sure Dan thinks that his supporters will be loyal to him personally rather than to the reform agenda he has - what's the word: soiled? battered? abandoned? - by sucking up to Healy.

The few partisans who post here (on both sides) are not a good indication. So try talking to downtown residents, like Dan should have done before making the leap. Based on the people I've talked to, Dan Levin has taken his good government "brand" and crashed it into a Team Healy billboard.

The full article is at: Al Sullivan's column.

I hate to distract from this thread's true subject, i,e, ripping Dan a new one alternating with attempts to explain the unexplainable.

But I was at the meeting in question, and I remember Candace Osborne speaking clearly, personally (about her stake in Jersey City and her son's future), and with well-reasoned points.

Of course everyone remembers Esther, who was passionate in her attack on Healy and his cronies for their mismanagement of the city. (I am waiting for her passionate defense of the same when she joins Healy's ticket as is rumored.)

Ms. Balcer, if you go back to the videotape, I think you will find that Candace's words will wear well. They may not have made much of an impression on you. There was certainly less bluster than others. But they made an impression on me.

But if he's not ashamed of his do-nothing record, his criminal pals, his double-dipping pension-padding taxpayer-funded "jobs," then it's no wonder he'll smear Steve Fulop's military service, his integrity, and his record of fighting for the people of Jersey City.

Expect more last desperate gasps from the do-nothing, know-nothing, sell-out-everything broken-down Healy machine.

Ticket #2 is incorrect and should be dismissed. It doesn't matter if you are guilty of something, you have to be guilty of the exact offense cited on the ticket, and all the other info on the ticket has to be correct.

tern is also right, if you take the trouble to go to court, and you mention some issue - like the already ticketed once - judges will often dismiss a portion of tickets or reduce the fine.

Good luck!

It's about time. I commend the Board members who were finally able to bring this about.

I can't imagine how the other four Board members (Sean Connors, Angel Valentin, Pat Sebron, William DeRosa) could justify their attempt to extend Dr. Epps' contract.

Dr. Epps' tenure has been marked by fiscal mismanagement, cronyism, questionable ethics, and a lack of bottom-line results in improving educational performance. I hate lining his pocket still more, but it's time to close this chapter. Now the focus must be moving on to a search for someone who can lead a real transformation of the system, focused on educational results.
