This doesn't sound good (as of 12:53 am - 10/3/2015)

Due to a track condition, PATH is operating 33rd-Hob, Nwk-Jsq and Wtc-Ex. Place only. NJT will cross honor PATH passengners.

This is a great thread! I live in Zone 11, which is really really small - so the opportunities for free, on-street, entitled parking are extremely limited!

I'm only entitled to park in places I could easily walk to from my home in a couple minutes - what good is that??? OUTRAGEOUS! How can I possibly get by???

Plus, people in Zone 2 can park in an area larger than Hoboken, that really chaps my ass!! Totally unfair!! I demand that the city council immediately make Zone 11 much larger!!

Yvonne, if you will support my cause to make Zone 11 as large as Hoboken, I'll support your effort to get a Zone 2 sticker.

Now that the hysteria has died down, the one takeaway I see is that the original plan appears to have worked as intended.

Yvonne herself said that the buildings on the 1999 vacant list that she checked out are now among the nicest looking properties on their respective blocks.

This document is on the city's Planning Studies page:

(last link on the page:)

Perhaps these are properties that were vacant years ago - in 2007, when the plan was last amended?

Please remember that when redevelopment of Newport and Exchange Place began, the Hudson River shoreline (on both sides, NY and NJ) was an industrial / post-industrial wasteland. The Hudson was a polluted mess. NYC was recently out of near-bankruptcy, full of crime and drugs. Having the PATH station within a block or two of your apartment or office would've been very attractive back then - as it is now - but overall it was a very different environment.

That said, no excuses for the poor planning / no big picture vision after those dark early days passed. As Brewster mentioned, Hoboken has done a much better job developing special public spaces on its waterfront.

There was a piece in the news a couple months ago about a cyclist in Queens who hit a huge pothole, crashed, got up, stumbled around, fell over, and impaled himself on a fence. Obviously different circumstances, but yeah - stuff like this happens.

If there are narrow spots where the parked bikes could encroach on pedestrian/vehicle traffic flow, perhaps they could angle the docks, so they eat up a little less space?
I've seen this setup at some of the stations in NYC.

The rumor I heard a couple months back (around the time of that "we're not selling") post was that Hard Grove was going to open in that space.

I guess it's possible the "we're not selling" posts were a bargaining tactic.

Would be good to have SOMETHING open there!

It would be great if there are enough stations and bikes to make last-mile use possible for a lot of people... not sure if that will be the deal we get (seems unlikely, especially outside of DTJC).
I just renewed my Citibike membership for another year, so I'm rooting for a successful launch here in JC.

I think the point of this is to enable travel between neighborhoods. If you're downtown and it's a 10-minute walk to where you're going, just walk.

That said, the map only shows 18 or 19 stations - rather than all 35 - so hopefully there will be more sprinkled around. It would definitely make sense to have stations in Hamilton Park and Paulus Hook.

The covered racks fill up pretty fast in the summer, but you should always be able to find a spot.

Big plus-1 to suggestions of beater bike, sturdy lock/more than one lock, and good locking technique. Those have worked for me - no problems - on a daily basis for the last seven years.

One more suggestion: don't leave anything on the bike (i.e. blinky lights, saddle bag, etc). That stuff will disappear. One time I left my rear blinky and someone stole the batteries out of it - left half of the light attached to the bike, and the other half on the ground nearby. You get the idea.

Good luck & ride safe!

The current "fountain" is a disgrace.

I've been passing through there on a daily basis since 2007, and not sure I recall ever seeing water in the "fountain." The planters get refreshed about once a year, and look good for a couple weeks - that's it.

If we go forward with a "fountain" option, the city needs to assure that there are adequate funds to keep it running. If there's any question about funding for operations/upkeep, better to go with an option that is simpler, less expensive - i.e. the city can maintain it going forward, and not have it look broken/neglected, like the current memorial.

PS snow removal around the current "fountain" in the winter is also a disgrace. The PA runs a pickup truck with a salt spreader in circles around their part of the plaza, but on the other part it's pretty much "dig your own ditch" - trudge through the slush and hope you don't fall down. I'm surprised that the city hasn't been sued into dealing with this in a more responsible manner.

PacoYtaco - I agree - I'm sure even the knucklehead in the SUV wasn't *intending* to do the wrong thing. I feel like I'm a pretty attentive driver, and there have been times I've done things like this (made a mistake - but I haven't yelled at people about it!)

The county has created a wonderful new amenity - and there are signs - they just need to do a little more to make the necessary separation clear, to make it safe. Could be more of those white plastic pylons, or low concrete curbs - or some other manner of barrier - just at the points where cars are entering the roadway.

I love the new bike/jogger lanes in Lincoln Park, but think the county needs to better job with signage and separating the lanes to keep cars where they should be.

Over the course of an hour's ride this afternoon, I encountered no less than three cars driving the wrong direction (clockwise) around the loop, in the bike/jogger lanes. With my yelling & arm waving, two of the drivers seemed to realize their error; the third, after a "playing chicken" near-miss, shouted "you're riding the wrong way!" out the window of his SUV.

I'm not just complaining here - I'm going to contact Freeholder O'Dea and the Parks Dept. But wanted to give users of the park a heads-up, too: be alert, until the county can do a better job making the lanes safe for everyone.

Looked like they were still awaiting deliveries of of few items... training some of the cashiers, etc - but I was able to look around, get what I needed, and check out quickly.

I wish them well - I'll be there a lot.

The past couple years, it seems there has been a growing group of websites that publish these surveys about different aspects of citiies acrosss the country.

Sometimes the results ring true, but often they seem horribly false. Hoboken... ?hipster? - really?
Not too long ago, I recall compteting ?JC is among the best for health and fitness? and ?JC is among the worst for health and fitness? articles/threads around the same time.

The outfits that produce these pieces clearly aren?t employing anyone with experience or judgement to make sure their stuff passes the sniff test before they hit the publish button.

I work at a news-oriented online company, and frankly am embarrassed that these surveys get picked up and promoted by local media - which puts them in front of a wider audience. I am embarrassed that we are talking about this particular ridiculous survey on JCList.

I?m going to ?vote with my feet? and not look at these threads and articles anymore. I?d like to see them die on the vine. Hopefully the resources behind them can be put towards something more interesting and productive.

This plan sounds great in many ways, but I have a few questions. I'm not 100% clear on how things are meant to work now (yeah - my bad), and how thing had previously been proposed to work in the future (before this plan came along).

I would appreciate elucidation from those with the pertinent facts.

Right now, if a call with medical emergency is placed to 911, is it planned that JCFD will arrive first, and ambulance from JCMC will arrive next & follow up?

According to this proposed plan, would we be relying on local volunteers (rather than JCFD) to to fill the first responder role until ambulances with professional EMTs can arrive on the scene?

What is the incentive to attract high-quality volunteers to fulfill this important duty?

Don't get me wrong, the distributed, community-mindedness of this plan sounds great. But the skeptic in me suspects $$ is at play - and while that could be a good thing for the budget there are other considerations that must be addressed.

Even in the Times...

Plan to End Overnight PATH Service Irks Riders

In the underworld of the subway, it can be hard to tell day from night. The high and low tides of passengers are usually one clue of the time.

The PATH platform at Ninth Street in Manhattan at 2:30 in the morning can be a bit disorienting, then, looking more like midday than the middle of the night. As dozens of people waited at that hour on a recent weekday, the only real tipoffs to the time were the drowsy eyes and drooping heads.

As the New Jersey-bound train to Hoboken and Journal Square pulled in, 35 minutes after the previous one, it was standing room only.

?It?s like Tokyo sometimes: You have to push your way on, and then you?re stuck like a sardine,? Carlos Parada said. He was on his way home to Journal Square after his shift at Strip House, a steakhouse on East 12th Street in Manhattan.

As if Mr. Parada?s commute were not grueling enough, he and thousands of his fellow riders found out there could be no commute whatsoever in the future. At the end of December, their Legislatures already adjourned, Governors Andrew M. Cuomo of New York and Chris Christie of New Jersey, vetoed a sweeping bill that would have reformed the agency. The governors, who jointly control the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, then unveiled a report of their own calling for changes.

Another possibility is Christie and Cuomo have no intention in letting this pass, but they condoned such an outrageous proposal so that there can be a big fight about it and they finally relent in the end. Leading to everyone cheering but the passage of no meaningful reform.

Remember, Christie and Cuomo have a history of this. It was revealed that they secretly asked the Port Authority to ask for completely outrageous toll hikes, so they could look like heroes by fighting and lowering the toll hikes. While nice theater, it screwed the average citizen, who now has to pay $14 to drive into the City.

This is great news - I think a program in JC would have a much better chance at success by linking with the NYC system, rather than going it along, or joining up with Hoboken/Weehawken.

Hopefully a sponsor will step up, and they'll spread the stations around a little bit - not have them all within a 1-mile radius of Grove St PATH.

Yes - very happy Fine Fare this is coming back. They have been making rapid progress with construction the last couple months.

Some nice improvements happening in this neighborhood - the renovation of Boyd-McGuiness Park @ Duncan & Kennedy should also be a terrific new amenity.

Love Duncan Hardware & Veniero - I give them as much business as I can. Wish the hardware store had Sunday hours... that's usually when I'm spending my fixit/home chores $$.

I don?t mind Teddy. At some point a few months ago, his health definitely dipped - but then he seemed to bounce back. Not the same Teddy as 20 years ago when I first started riding PATH - but this could also be said of me, or any of us.

A couple years ago, I saw an extremely drunk, emotionally distraught woman try to provoke Teddy into a fight on the train during the evening rush. It was an ugly scene, but Teddy showed restraint... he earned some extra respect from me that day.

That said, my sense is, this pissing match between JC and the PA isn?t about Teddy, it?s about the homeless people who congregate in & around JSQ. I hope said pissing match does not hinder delivery of services to these folks.

I call BS on this. I moved to DTJC in Feb '93 and immediately got a PO box at the main post office at Montgomery & Washington... I was there frequently; most often, driving my car. (I assume that's the PO referred to here). There were definitely meters on the streets adjacent to the PO in 1993.

Yvonne, if the post office sucks, or if some other business sucks, don't use it. Jersey City is full of enterprising people who will find a better way to provide you with the service you need.

That's one of the great things about living here... there are tons of people with that entrepreneurial spirit all around.

If you're stuck in a rut... gonna keep going to the post office on Washington... gonna keep getting tickets while you stand in line - good luck and godspeed.

If you'd prefer to find a better way to spend your time and money, I think you'll find many options - local business people willing to cater to your needs.

A fun excercise, harkening back to the dark old days when DTJC didn?t have so goddam many restaurants. When I moved in ?93, Helen?s & Stella?s pizza seemed like institutions. I think Shadman was there, and Ibby?s opened a couple years later.
Presto?s and Komegashi were favorites from those early days. Iron Monkey opened mid-90s.

I used to love the old Newport Pancake House (predecessor to the Brownstone Diner... run by the same family).

I agree, once you get out of downtown, you?re in a different world, with places like Miss America Diner and White Mana (that have been around since the 1940s) at the far end of the scale.
