Re: Jersey City men help detain teen trying to burglarize car (5th and Coles)

Good to hear about neighbors getting involved to help one another. Glad they caught the him. So sad that a 17 year old is going around trying to steal things and assaulting people, especially if he is doing this to his neighbors.

Agree with Ripple. They should re-develop that stretch...maybe housing for police or other civil servants.

I'm going to guess this property (136 Erie) sells for about $850k. My guess is based upon a similar sized house just around the corner on 8th St, basically only a few doors away, also listed with Armagno that sold for $850k That property had rental income and a back yard. We will learn more soon.

Just heard 136 Erie sold for ~$950k (ask was $1.1 million) to the Aussies. Inside was rough when I saw it so I would imagine it needs some work.

I live in Hamilton Park Area and it's convenient and relatively safe. Its ideal for us because I work in NYC (PATH) and my wife works in central Jersey (car). We park on the street and have not had any issues.

As for realtors, we used Natalia Chebalina (spelling?) and had good results. Hope this helps

60%!?!?! Is that legal? Your rent must be really cheap or they're trying to get you out of there b/c that kind of increase is outrageous.

Depends on how fast they close. Closing price will become public soon after but I'm not sure exactly how long it takes. Went into contract pretty quick. Wonder if the Aussies (Dixon Leasing) got it?

Always liked that house on Erie (front page pic). I guess the Aussies liked it too....so much so they bought it for their portfolio.

That house is gross. The Aussies liked it so much they are going to fill it with renters.

Ha! If you think that house is gross, I wonder what you would think of my house!! That house is in much better condition than mine.

I went to the 294 8th street open house and thought it was nice. Outside the Aussies (who have cash), anyone looking for these kind of houses these days must have BANK or a great job or something b/c getting a new mortgage these days is a pain in the A!*.

bearbear -

We've been talking to several architects about rennovating our brick rowhouse. Several of them wanted to charge us a fee based on a % of the contstruction cost. Others charge a flat fee...much cheaper but don't provide much service (overseeing construction, permits, etc.). We opted for a flat fee since it is much cheaper.

My $.02 (from someone who is not an expert):

Personally, I think it's ridiculous to force people out of their homes by increasing the tax on their home because the "value" of their home skyrockets. They get taxed /penalized on this "unrealized" gain and have to consider uprooting their lives b/c taxes are becoming too onerous!?!?! Come on. Maybe house went up in value but did they get a better job to pay more taxes?

Equalize this....fairness that.....these are pretty words but I think we need to focus on how JC is spending all this damn money and why it needs to constantly increase taxes.

Believe me....I want to improve my house and make the neighborhood nicer but am wary of increasing my RE taxes.

I agree that something needs to be done. Too many people are blowing the sign to save a but of time. I live nearby and there are a ton of kids walking that intersection. Hate to have my kid involved in an accident there.

I vote for more police presence followed by a speed bump.

Where on 8th did this happen?? Hopefully this is a wake-up call for the police to increase the number of patrols in the area. To be robbed in front of your own house is crazy.

Glad they caught at least one of the perps.....these guys were after all running east towards the 7th Street police station!!

Sure this has been covered already, but I just want get a sense of what people are currently paying for a home inspection and RE closing attorney.

We are looking to buy a single family row house. The only wrinkle is that it has 2 kitchens (mother/daughter set up) so I'm not sure if a home inspection will cost more. Thanks in advance.

We moved from NYC to Jersey City. I work in NYC and my wife works in central Jersey so it's too much of a pain for her to drive through NYC every day. Now she can drive against traffic to get to work and I can take the Path. We like our neighbors in the HP area and the feel of dowtown JC overall.

Re: Failure to stop at a stop sign! help!

Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

I think you know the options:

1) not guilty - contest (with or without an attorney)
2) guilty - pay the fine

In certain parts of NJ, I think you can reduce the points even if you plead guilty and pay the fine. See STILLINJC's post above.

FYI - For a "rolling stop"...instead of coming to a complete stop as you should to comply with a stop sign, you're just going through intersection at a low speed. People risk getting a ticket if they get caught, but people do it anyway since most people get away with it (similar to speeding). Tons a of people in my area come to a "rolling stop" to save some time. Unfortunately for them, some undercover cars are hawking certain intersections (near schools).

Sorry, not sure what you meant about the cop's attitude being horrible. Did his attititude cause you to get a ticket or did he cite you for something you didn't do??

It can be done but it will eat up some of your time. We contested a ticket and the judge ended up dismissing it. Same situation as you...due to confusing signs, we ended up with a ticket. It really annoyed us, so we decided to ask for a hearing. Take some pics to help your argument...that's what we did. Best of luck.
