I noticed in many places it appears like they are putting up identical stop light poles/bases 2 feet from the current ones. If so, couldnt they have used the current ones and just changed out the lights?

What's weirder is that they just put in the new sidewalks with that red rubber mat stuff at the crosswalks, and then they put the new poles/bases right in front of it. I don't think someone in a wheelchair would have any way of wheeling up the ramp and then around the pole. It's really dumb.

I'm sorry, I know other people like it, but I hate the "6th Borough" nickname for Jersey City. I don't care if they want to use it for other places, but for JC, I think it makes it sound like we don't have our own thing going, we just desperately want to be the little sister to NYC. And we all know that's not true. Don't we?

And... I walked over there, apparently the hours on their website are also wrong. They're closed Sundays. I got BonChon instead.

(Thanks, everyone, for following the travails of my day.)

WEll, finally someone answered and he said "You're calling a residence, they have new number now." It's the -0076 number on their website! I feel bad, I called like 5 times because I didn't know if they were just busy or what... Oops.

I saw a family of foxes years ago, but never wolves.

Would wolves attack a dog? All the more reason to keep your dog close by.

I got a jar at Sam's Club in Secaucus a while back. They were strong - a little went a long way. Not sure if they still them at Sam's Club, sometimes you find something there and they don't have it the next time you go back.

Re: Downtown: Debit Card Fraud at Chase Bank

I have a Chase account. Last week I booked a hotel room overseas online for an upcoming trip, and Chase froze my account and called me with a fraud alert. I have to admit I was pretty impressed how quickly they were on it.

In Europe they use the cards with the chip in them, apparently they're harder to replicate. In the US, the banks say it's cost prohibitive to switch over to that system here, I guess it's still cheaper to pay out all these fraudulent transactions?

At Duane Reade and other places that let you 'blink' the card, I do that, somehow it feels more secure. I'm not sure that it is, but I figure at least the technology to steal your account info via a 'blink' would have to be a little more advanced than your basic magnetic strip reader.

Not to change the topic, but you know who else I've seen masturbating? Those dollar bus drivers.

They park on Columbus I guess between routes or something and I've seen, on 2 occasions, drivers masturbating in their empty buses. I couldn't tell whether it was the same driver twice or two different drivers.

Gross. Can't you wait until you get home?

Saw this and thought it was interesting/relevant:

http://www.seattlepi.com/local/422957_roosters06.html

Seattle wants to ban roosters. Not chickens or hens, just roosters. Because neighbors don't like hearing cock-a-doodle-do at sunrise I guess. (And because chicken/egg farming can be done without them.)

How does that work?

I grew up on a chicken farm, I'll field this one. The simple answer is: eggs come out unfertilized if there's no male (rooster) around.

Not to get to graphic, but think about a human woman. Putting aside the modern miracles of birth control and fertility drugs, during the years between puberty and menopause she'll release an egg each month (usually one, sometimes two, the case of fraternal twins.). She releases these eggs every month, regardless of whether there's a male around and whether she's having sex. Same goes for chickens but they release more eggs (not just one a month.)

So, the eggs we get in the grocery store or farmers market are from hens and there is no rooster involved. Of course you'll want to involve a rooster if you want to fertilize some eggs to make your next generation of egg laying hens.

Finally, someone commented on the smell of a chicken farm. I could be biased, like I said I grew up on a small chicken farm and I certainly didn't think my home smelled. But I think this depends on a few factors: how often the farm is cleaned, how big the farm is, and also whether chickens are being slaughtered/killed for meat. I don't think a typical egg farm smells much (as long as you're sweeping up the chickens' droppings) but I would agree that if you drive past a big Perdue farm it smells - I think you're smelling the chicken factory rather than the egg laying process. My parents had maybe 20-30 hens at a time, we swept out the hen house every day, and I don't think most people passing by even knew it was there.

I could be wrong, maybe people just didn't want to tell me that my house stunk...

I should add that she had other plants beside basil. I remember cherry tomatoes and chili peppers, but there were maybe 5-10 other kinds of plants there that I don't remember. Check it out.

I bought a basil plant today at the Grove St farmers market. The lady started the organic seedlings on her rooftop, I believe. I plan on leaving it in the pot on my fire escape, maybe a bigger pot just so it will be less likely to knock over or blow away in a storm.

I'm surprised to hear it was so slow - I guess with so many people. The only reason why I didn't join in was because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to keep the pace, I'm not a serious rider or anything - now I know for next time.

And I'm happy to hear the "missed connection" worked out - at least to the point of you 2 finding each other. Good luck!

Re: DON'T TAKE PATH THIS MORNING
#51

I took the PATH about an hour ago, (around 7:40 a.m.), Grove to WTC, no delays, didn't seem more crowded than usual.

I think they ran 2 WTC trains back to back - because when I came down the stairs I heard someone say "The WTC train just came through a minute ago," and then another WTC train came pretty quick after that. Not sure if they were just trying to get alleviate delays or coincedence or what, it happens sometimes.

After I got to the city around 8:30, my mother called me to tell me that the PATH trains were delayed. She often calls with things she sees on the news that might effect the city but wouldn't generally effect me (e.g. There are traffic delays near the UN - but I work downtown), this one she got right but she was just too late.

Somewhat related, why don't the USPS mail carriers in JC wear uniforms? If you see someone going into and out of apartment buildings with boxes and mail, it would be easier to know if they're legit if they're wearing a uniform instead of a t-shirt and shorts.

Re: Are there drug dealers loitering near Helen's Pizza?
#53

Home away from home

I agree that they're just guys hanging out. If they were drug dealers, they're not doing much in the way of hustling. If I'm thinking of the same old men, more than once I have seen one of them loaded in the ambulance later at night - I assumed he had just passed out, but I don't really know.

Quote:
I've travelled throughout the world, and every country on every continent I've been to has elderly men who choose (and it is their right) to "hang out" in public where they wish. Unfortunately in this country we don't have plazas which would serve as a public meeting place for them.

I think we do have plazas, not many, but a few. They could hang out near the Grove Street plaza, or even that tiny "park" at the corner of Jersey and Newark. Even across the street from there, by the bank, there are a few benches and a wider sidewalk. And then there's the bigger parks like Van Vorst. I think the reason why they hang out near Helen's or the liquor store across the street is simply because it's closer to the liquor store.

Re: Trees along Christopher Columbus drive

I live on Columbus and they already started taking down some trees around Coles/Varick last year, allegedly as part of the Newark Ave. redevelopment. (??? Maybe they had the wrong street???)

I think it looks terrible without the trees, it really took away from the neighborhood feeling. I don't really understand - they're going to take away the things that make the neighborhood people friendly - pedestrian walkways, places where people can stop and talk to their neighbors, turn it into living on a highway, and then wonder where all of the crime comes from?

Please, tell me what to do to stop this "plan" from becoming a reality.

Having zero previous gardening experience, I'd like to try to grow some basil this year to make my own pesto. Probably in a container. When is the best time to do it? Is it too early? It's feeling like spring already, but I guess I wouldn't be surprised if it snowed one more time.

I walked past a car with a broken window Tuesday night about 10-11pm. Columbus between Jersey & Coles. I called the JCPD non-emergency number thinking that since it had a JC parking permit in the window, maybe they could contact the owner - at least to let him get anything of value out for the night, and it was raining a little bit. They sent police out, but I don't know if they contacted the owner or not.
