Oh, I'm sure there are many entry level positions that would take a chance on them, given adequate supervision and extended probationary periods.

Went for dinner last night with a young in-law I was obligated to treat anyway, so...

Got there early, about 6:30, and went upstairs--first ones in! We were given the single two-seater table by the window, a very nice spot affording an unparalleled view of the Valu-Plus. The other window-side table is a large one, seating about eight. If I were to make suggestions, I think it would make more sense to have three two-seat tables by the window, giving people a few more "romantic" settings (as romantic as a view up Newark Ave. can be, anyway).

Service was prompt and helpful. I forget our waitress' name, but she was the one with long brown hair and glasses; very sweet. Even overly accommodating--I thought maybe Justiciero's review might've been posted in the kitchen. The busboys are a little clueless, attempting to remove plates not yet half-eaten, etc., but that's a minor quibble. Food arrived in good time and as ordered.

And it was real good. Had a pint of the Fuller's--excellent. Like BM, we tried the duck and sweet potato ravioli. Agreed that the individual tastes were tough to discern, but the whole package melted nicely on the tongue. Good calamari. My "date" had the salmon and enjoyed it while I ordered the hanger steak. Came medium rare as requested and tasted wonderful, very tender, lotsa garlic in the sauce, very tasty sliced potatoes and mushrooms.

Too full for dessert....

Placed was jammed by the time we finished eating.

Very comfortable space. Despite the crowd, we were never hurried. Good stuff!

"The nine members of the Jersey City municipal council work on a part-time basis and make less than $30,000 a year," said Healy. "This requires they work an additional job."

Um, so I guess it's impossible that the other job be a non-governmental one? Perish the thought!

Went last evening, probably my 5th or 6th time there. No attitude issues, big guy with the arm cast was fine, lady/owner as sweet as ever. Began with the cactus taco which is fine and spicy. Then the carnitas tortas, one of the most delicious sandwiches I've ever had, anywhere. A JC treasure, that place.

Though we'd eaten there in the past, it'd been a long while and this thread perked up my interest again. So I stopped by last evening for take out.

The smell didn't particularly put me off. It was more like lingering bug spray than anything else; not my favorite aroma but nothing that would make me turn around and leave. The staff were quite pleasant (the older balding guy especially); no complaints whatsoever on that front.

I'm not all that well versed in Vietnamese cuisine (probably only eaten it 10-12 times) so navigating the menu was something of a chore. I wanted to try a pho and went with #6 which I think jcinsom had recommended. Added an appetizer of cold rolls with diced pork. Total bill, $9.25.

The rolls were very good, interesting texture between the slightly gummy, uncooked wrapper and the granular pork with greens. Decent if slightly bland sweet dipping sauce.

I'm not at all sure I mixed everything properly with the pho. You get about a quart of broth and a quart-size container of noodles, thinly sliced beef and veggies--a lot of material! There was also a packet of bean sprouts which I dumped into the bowl (was this correct?). And there were several small condiment containers. I didn't include these, not sure if I should have. In any case, the pho was phine. Maybe could have used some spicing up, hence my thought that those condiments could have come in handy. Pho phans can hopefully clue me in. The beef was excellent--wish I could get that quality routinely at your average deli. I can see the pho being a great winter meal, like the lapaz bachoy up at Fiesta.

I was wondering which dessert equates to the halo-halo as well--the parfait?

In any case, I'll be back fairly often I think.

Word of advice: If you go to contest the ticket, even if it's 120 degrees out, do not wear shorts. They're deemed improper apparel no matter how much sense it makes to wear them. The one time I contested a ticket, I trudged up there on such a day only to be told I couldn't enter the court wearing shorts. I really didn't feel like walking back home and changing and had the brilliant idea that there might be a place on Bergen Ave. I could get a cheap pair of jeans. Sure enough, there was this tiny hole in the wall selling jeans for about $12--specifically marketed to bozos like me who thought they could get into traffic court wearing shorts. Not sure if this applies only to males.

But yeah, watching a bunch of cases before mine, it seemed that anyone with even a half-assed excuse gets the ticket at least cut in half if not dismissed.

I wanted to like Lisbon a lot. We ate there three times earlier this year and while some of the food was all right, the main courses always disappointed, especially the meat dishes. I just had the feeling that the basic quality of the meat wasn't so hot (the pork and clam dish was especially dreary). Yes, good sangria and decent desserts and the room itself is very comfortable, the service fine. But it ain't no Tony Da Caneca (in Newark), not by a long shot.

btw, the affiliated pizza place does a pretty OK white clam pie.

Well, so far, so good. Stopped by on the way home and ordered a Tilapia Panang, basically a fillet in a coconut/curry sauce that balanced spicy and sweet, with peppers, peas and carrots. Very tasty! Large serving ($13) of the fish (no bones to be found), big hunk of rice. Good stuff, I'll be back.

He was someone, imho, who it wasn't all that easy to get into, even for jazz fans with avant proclivities. Speaking from personal experience, I'd owned his "Spiral" LP (Arista/Freedom) since the late 70s, I think, enjoyed it sorta but not enough to really investigate further. I'd hear pieces of his from time to time on the radio and always *almost* have them grab me. But then, finally, way late in the game, I picked up "Point of Departure" and everything clicked. So whereas someone like Cecil Taylor never caused me a moment's hesitation, the ostensibly "straighter" music of Hill proved quite knotty, at least for this listener. Probably because it's not all that straight at all!

Whether the blummster is a shill or not, I find overall atmosphere at least as important as food or varieties of available beverages. Now, I don't expect any bar to stay in business that caters to my particular musical interests--won't happen--but the least I can hope for is that whatever they're playing, it's at a volume level low enough to allow conversation without screaming. Yes, I understand that the idea of conversation is old-fashioned, maybe even existentialist, but damn. I'm always amazed at bar owners who fail to grasp the acoustics of their space, automatically hyping the volume levels and having Joan Jett ricocheting around the room until she's amped up to Glenn Branca vicinity. Why does "fun" assume grating loudness and big hair?

The new Maggie's (there's a name out front now written on some cardboard--can't remember it) will happily be divided upstairs and down, the bar on the lower level. That should solve most noise issues. Maybe she'll toss a few copies of "No Answer" or the Paris Review around.

We've gone two or three times since Maggie left and, while the food is pretty much the same (I happen to like it), the atmosphere's gone downhill in a Hoboken bar kind of way. Overworked (thereby inattentive) wait-staff and worst, blaring 80s rock of the Bon Jovi ilk making conversation impossible and keeping food down difficult.

Might go back in nicer weather when we can sit outside, but not until then. Waiting patiently for Maggie's place to open.

While I've come to generally prefer Cafe Manila just up the street (more interesting selection), Fiesta still does a great fried tilapia--very juicy and tasty. As mentioned in the review, the lapaz bachoy is also an excellent cold weather soup/meal.

Jim399, I'm on the 6th St block that recently lost those three trees. I also was a little annoyed to see them go (the two live ones anyway), but I know the guys who initiated the action and they were basically doing so for safety reasons. The dying one, obviously, was a risk to be blown over one day. The other two, from what I was told, were a type (I forget the name) whose root base covered a fairly small volume relative to their height and above-ground weight and were also considered a danger to be blown over eventually. How valid all this is I have no real idea, but in any case the driving force wasn't just to remove trees for the sake of removing them. Personally, I would've taken the risk and enjoyed the trade-off of the leaf cover but then, my building isn't one that would've suffered damage if one or both were toppled.

The brutal pruning of the Polish Vet's Hall yard is another matter. That should be a gorgeous building/property but looks pretty miserable.

I've noticed the legs-open-wide sitting posture for the last few years now and have come to assume that, since it's always males, the purpose is to advertise the purported enormity of the member hidden within. Real adult.

There's an epidemic of multiple bag carriage, though. What's with that? Why the necessity, male or female, for two or three increasingly large satchels? I get on with a newspaper and a book. Everything else I need is in my wallet. Why do I get the impression that, especially for guys, a man-purse has become de rigueur for impressing your boss that you're taking home work? And ladies, a regular purse is annoying enough. Three purses is absurd. The average number of bags seems to increase with body weight, I notice, expanding the individual's silhouette out to around five feet.

btw, if you look at some portions of the upper walls where, I'm guessing, weathering has worn away the grime, you can see the original color of the stone, a rich brownish-red. A good cleaning would go a long way toward making it less "ugly", though I'm admittedly baffled by those who find it so now.

Yeah, I absolutely agree. The embankment, as it stands, is one of my favorite things about the area (and we live directly across from it). For decades, I loved the stonework on the Central Park transverses, now I can just look out my window and see close to the same thing. I wouldn't mind a park but I'd be perfectly happy if it remained as is.

I'm guessing they'd target either crappy old wooden doors or the modern, hollowed-out variant. I know I was a little concerned about what seemed to be pretty easy access at 511 Manila for anyone with a strong leg and a thick boot.

I posted here a couple weeks back that, apparently, two bike-riding policemen were ringing doorbells on 6th St, checking the sturdiness of outside doors, referencing break-ins in the area. Wasn't sure at the time if they were real cops--still not but it seems more likely now, if this sort of thing's been going on at a higher rate than normal over the summer.

Yesterday afternoon in Hamilton Park, I met our ex-neighbor from when we rented on Manila and 9th. He said our old apartment (511 Manila) had recently been broken into in the same manner that seems to be the trend around here: the front door (weak wood) kicked in. Right around noon. I wonder if we're talking about one or two groups of thugs.

Chama, we moved here a little over five years ago from the Upper West Side to the HP area. It takes a little while getting used to but eventually I think you'll enjoy it. The quiet is pretty amazing. I used to have a white noise machine I'd place on our bedroom window sill to partially block out street noise--no need for that here. I still get slightly amazed when I take the hound out for her evening pee 9:30 - 10 and there's *no one* out on the street. Very nice. Between that and the amount of living space we'd never have been able to afford in Manhattan, it ain't half-bad.

First time I've ever seen this gentleman, btw. Aside from his nifty attire, he was carrying on a rather weird/scary conversation with a young-ish sounding woman over one of those walkie-talkie phones where everyone can hear both ends of the conversation. Really loud. She was screaming, as near as I c ould decipher, about getting slapped and he was telling her to calme down, be quiet.

Yikes.
