The scary part is the letter in 2011 where Healy asks the legislature to support vouchers!
http://stevenfulop.com/sites/default/ ... _jersey_city_teachers.pdf It's odd and disturbing. No matter how you are going to vote and no matter which way you slice it, using teachers as pawns by telling them they and other public education staff will lose their jobs if you don't vote in the guy who openly supports vouchers is nothing short of despicable. Surprising, no. None-the-less extremely cruel to toy with people's fear during tough economic times.

And there are plenty of teachers in my neighborhood that think this is really dirty politics on the part of Healy and don't think it is right for their Union to lie to them just to get them to vote a way that will benefit a few.
Why lie? My feeling is that the Healy campaign is looking to turn people off so badly they don't even want to come out and vote. They rely on low voter turn out and lying to win. Really disgusting. I hope it back fires in their face. Teachers aren't stupid. There are 100 substitutes on average needed daily city-wide. Many principals call up the administration to put in a request to find out that there is a shortage and they won't get their request filled. This hurts the students, they are the ones that pay the price. Exactly where are the current jobs going to be lost if there aren't enough substitutes now?

Remember that when the police conduct their stops that often they are looking at whether you come to a full 3 second stop at the stop sign and stop for pedestrians in crosswalks not at traffic lights.

Nothing will definitely come of this meeting if no one speaks up or shows up. While I see what you mean and I would have agreed with you back in 2006 when it seemed like we would just meet walls and excuses, 1 1/2 years ago Councilman Fulop, myself, and the community in the York Street area of Grove (one block from City Hall) said something must be done. They got angry and they got loud.
I wrote a summary of the consent decree http://stevenfulop.com/news/consent-decree To help people know what is being done and track progress. I and others in the community started showing up at the JCMUA monthly meetings to observe and ask questions. The JCMUA has been responding admirably. There are now two large projects underway to greatly alleviate flooding. Don't accept no as an answer. Not showing up and not saying anything ensures nothing will happen. You will leave your few neighbors, who are fighting for everyone, to flap in the wind and get told, "I only see a few of you so it can't be that big of an issue". Honestly, screw that! Numbers make a big difference and things are starting to move in the right direction. The first fix will be installed nearly 2 years after Irene. These things take a long time. If you don't speak up now then when the impact is great and could have been prevented, you are looking at another 2-5 years for help. This is your community and these are your homes. Don't just lie down and let the City assume they can walk all over you. Demand that something be done, demand accountability, and demand answers at the very least. We were successful in getting high power pumps at the end of Essex Street (to be complete by August) and the dedicated funding for the rehab of the East Side plant to handle storm water for downtown and Bergen Lafayette (3-5 years off) because we didn't accept that nothing could be done. If a group of about 10 of us can get this much done, imagine what an even larger group can do. Obviously no one else is looking out for us. Nothing can be done is not acceptable.

I know there are a lot of people concerned with the aftermath of Irene and Sandy so I am posting this here because the City says they will send several officials (in addition to the ones listed in the announcement) to answer all the questions that residents have. This would be an excellent opportunity to get some answers and get the contacts that can help you solve your issue.

Re: Dan is still Dan

The one issue here though is that Dan had a very good chance to do the right thing by promoting even stronger pay to play reform and instead said he would back Healy's as the best possible legislation; that he was still Dan standing for the best possible reform. A month later we got the reason why Healy vetoed the Council backed pay to play reform legislation that Dan surprisingly did not support. We saw clearly that Team Healy was looking to circumvent the pay to play reform laws by using a PAC that the Fulop sponsored ordinance would have prevented.
Dan said nothing. This is something that people have to seriously consider. People get desperate to win and what do they compromise in the process. I will maintain that I don't think Dan has gone to the dark side and I don't believe for a moment that he has changed into someone less than good. However, it shows a desperation that will allow him to to justify losing his principles in order to win and in order to allow the dishonest people a win. Sitting on the Council there will be more opportunities where the end will justify the means. That is not a win for the City and its residents. How do you justify allowing your team to veto reform and attempt to circumvent the pay to play laws and stay silent to those you are asking to vote for you? For me this is a sticking point and a big one. For those who personally know Dan, I get it. I just don't see how you justify this. Quote:

Well the judge told the City that they couldn't bring a suit against Byrne because the City wasn't the injured party. I would assume that corporation counsel would already know that, but they went ahead and brought the suit anyway and the judge told them the campaign would have to bring the suit.
You've already got Bill Matsikoudis heavily involved in the Healy campaign when he is supposed to already be representing both the Council and the Mayor unbiasedly. SO I suspect someone would need to bring an ethics complaint against Matsikoudis for using his office and City resources for political purposes. A group like Civic JC might be willing to do this, but it is tough to do and Team Healy knows this so they get away with a lot of skirting around the edge while playing a game of smoke and mirrors... oh the circumventing of pay to play ordinances on an invitation was an error, we never saw the invitation. Oh, we didn't know that the City couldn't bring suit, our bad... blah blah blah. It's all about who is willing to call whom out and go down a long and expensive legal road.

My belief is that they weren't just looking to keep him from using nickname that he is known by, i think they were looking to take this first step and then have the petitions to be on the ballot invalidated and therefore have him removed from the race.
What greatly upsets me about this whole thing is that the Healy campaign originally created the complaint using the City's law department staff and resources. This is outright illegal, not to mention highly unethical. I can't even imagine how pissed Robert Byrne must be. Quote:

Since fluoride is in most toothpastes these days and dentists provide fluoride treatments, one wonders what is the money to made off of adding fluoride to the water and by what companies. I wonder if our water bills will increase even more in the name of health.
Sorry to be so cynical, but look at who exactly is pushing this bill and who donates to the campaigns of the elected officials pushing this. We have plenty of fluoride in our lives, we don't really need more and to those who have compromised immune systems or are elderly, this is a concern.

For me I think the saddest person to see in the video is Krunal Thakore. He's a bright guy, but so far in Steve Lipski's back pocket it is scary. He wants to run for something and he should dump the machine and just run rather than looking like a shill.
Still, it shows you who is getting picked for the videos and that Steve Lipski is still very much involved in campaigning. Of course there must be a job in there somewhere for these people. Quote:

Re: Dan is still Dan

Actually the parts of the sewer system that are damaged are being fixed and we don't have to wait generations. While I agree that storm water retention is important, the lack of overall planning as far as new developments surrounding older housing stock thereby creating a bathtub effect is of even more concern.
You are on the inside now Dan. You are at the table and you therefore have the ability to make a real impact by demanding to know what the plan is to protect the existing homes rather than allow for these huge foundations to be built on top of mini hills that will divert water around them and only collect storm run off for their "stand alone" buildings. Clearly the fact that the administration has had many meetings with developers to push their projects (new ratables) forward and none for the public must cause you great alarm and is surely something you can change right now. Councilman Fulop and I started the pressure 18 months ago to help alleviate flooding to the Van Vorst Park and Paulus Hook area and these fixes are the only thing that the administration has to hang their hat on and will come nearly 2 years after Irene. Exactly when do you stop with the lines "it will take generations" and everything is crumbling and actually start doing, instead of telling people what they can do to help the City that is not doing their job? The people of downtown deserve a candidate that is going to start fixing the situation and not just hand out a brochure telling them what they should be doing because they won't see relief in their life time. The point of making them look like bricks is that they act as a visual that will calm traffic. I don't know how accurate this is or how much you can calm down Jersey City drivers, but it is touted as a time tested traffic calming solution and that is a positive thing no matter how cheap it looks.
Of course I too believe it is the homeless people, if not the angry mommy stroller brigade. However, I am the first to admit that it could very well have some link to Blackwater.

Are you saying that you receive this newsletter in the mail still? I haven't had one in over two years, probably more.
Why not? I haven't moved. I remember them announcing they were going to change over to electronic format and I signed up through the City's Web site, but I never got any email newsletter either. I'll believe you if you are saying you have gotten the actual physical newsletter at your home every year, but not if you are just submitting for dates. I know the County does a great calendar that I get in the mail every year. I love that calendar. Now I am wondering why I don't receive the Municipal Newsletter in any format if they are doing that, but I did just see this spring 2011 one on the Mayor's action bureau site http://cityofjerseycity.com/mayor.aspx?id=1204&terms=newsletter Were these mailed? Looks like four pages. Too bad they don't have an archive of the past ones or they don't email these out to those who signed up for the email list. Maybe they do and I don't get them due to a glitch on mine or their end. Can someone post the 6 page one that they got in the mail? Quote:

Except we haven't seen this news letter in a few years and then this one suddenly pops up months before an election.
I'm not surprised though as to the use of tax payer money, let's be honest this is what it is. In 2009 Mayor Healy created the same campaign colors that he just happened to have Cultural Affairs use for all of their big public events like National Night Out and a block party in every ward. All illegal, but you have to have the stamina and money (because they will just use city hall lawyers) to bring a case like this about. People want transparency, but I find it incredibly transparent. They actually both come off quite well. I was surprised at how well Dan did, but clearly they come off very well with one giving more details in some questions and the other in other questions. Still Candice was ahead of the curve on flooding issues before Sandy hit and then was able to rally and lead people in the disaster relief effort. Leadership is a key aspect here. In 2009 Team Healy had campaign signs posted on traffic cones of street projects they were doing so it was free advertising for those people driving by. They were up for about a week while the crews worked along Newark Ave so you really couldn't claim the campaign did not know about them.

Re: Power Lines in JC

I don't know why Mercer street has some of its line buried and I do know the cost to do this is exorbitant. However, in the aftermath of Sandy the lines had damage and the crews did not have a map on them of the buried system so they did not get power restored until 2 weeks after their neighbors with above ground lines did.
The BPU (Board of Public Utilities) just put out their findings for Irene. They just published their findings in January and I am still making my way through the 68 page document now. Some of the recommendations include having disaster responses that include 75% of their customers having power outages and web sites for municipalities to view the real time power outages and restoration process. They should be holding public hearings shortly on Sandy that I imagine will include even more recommendations. Our whole system is tied together and I would like to see an administration that is more forward thinking and proactive when it comes to the flooding in Bergen/Lafayette and downtown. I would also like to see what can be done about surge protection for Country Village. However, I think burying the lines is what municipalities do in areas where heavy winds and a lot of trees regularly take out power lines, not areas prone to flooding. When the power lines were first put up in Jersey City, people found them so ugly that they planted what would become huge trees underneath them with the idea that the branches and foliage would grow up around them and hide the lines.

Right, especially not Goldman Sachs.... Bloomberg is offering big incentives to lure businesses back into NYC. I'm not talking about the WTC office space. I'm saying that Jersey City might benefit from the WTC as we can offer cheaper living space, which in turn will increase the tax base. It will also add more stress to the PATH system. It will be an adjustment.
