I agree. They looked cheap to begin with. And they're slippery in the snow and rain.

This happened to me when I was younger. I guess it's hard for some people to understand why someone wouldn't speak up. You really can't know how you will react until you are in the situation. I was groped by a creep on the subway, and was so filled with shame that I couldn't say a word.

I find it interesting that so many commenters are demanding to know why she didn't ask for help on the train or anything like that, when so many of you immediately questioned the truth of her claim. Would you ask for help from someone if you thought they would accuse you of lying?

Exactly.

Don't forget sudden stops! You see, ladies may perceive a "grinding" or "pushing up against," when really the person next to them just lost his footing on a crowded train. Sillies!

BurningClumpOfHair, I agree with you.

I can't believe the misogynistic bullshit on display here from so many.

Yes, none of us on this board know exactly what transpired, but the fact that anyone's first reaction would be to assume the woman is lying or oversensitive is just revolting.

Do you think it's easy for a woman to come forward in such a situation? Just for some general perspective, according to the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network, 54% of sexual assaults go unreported to the police. See http://www.rainn.org/get-information/statistics/reporting-rates.

I'm assuming you all know that criminal sexual contact on the train *is* a thing that happens, right?

I could go on, but what's the point? I know I won't change your minds.

You have to be a citizen of the United States and of the local area to vote in an election anywhere in the U.S.A. You can be out of the country but your allegiance must still be registered with one country the U.S.A. For instance, Italy will be holding their elections for Prime Minister, Senate, and Chamber Represenitives. Italians abroad can vote as long as their citizenship is with Italy and not anywhere else. If you either vote in the U.S.A., you cannot vote elsewhere and if you are legal to vote elsewhere, you cannot vote here in the U.S.A.

Sorry to get off-topic, but slight correction: You can have dual citizenship (i.e., USA and Italy) and still vote in both USA and Italy elections. Italian co-nationals residing abroad (listed in the AIRE) may vote for Senate and Chamber representatives who represent "Italiani all'estero" (e.g., I know many people who voted for representatives of the North/Central American region of Italians abroad in this current election). However, you cannot vote for Prime Minister as a co-national listed in the AIRE-- you must be *both* a citizen and a resident of Italy to do that.

But, yes, you must be a US citizen to vote in any US election.

This reminds me of an article I recently read about gentrification in Crown Heights: http://narrative.ly/2013/01/the-ins-and-the-outs/

From the article: "MySpace NYC is a real estate agency that arrived in 2008, and is perhaps the most controversial, notorious player in the entire Franklin Avenue saga. [...] A undated marketing letter from a group called IDG Holdings but signed by a principal of MySpace informs building owners: 'We buy properties ?As is? and in any condition and price range. We pay Top Dollar, in Cash, without any Broker fees. We can close as fast as 7-10 days'?

Now, I'm not saying that Dixon operates similarly to MySpace NYC as described in the article, as I don't know enough about Dixon to say one way or the other. But I recommend the article.

It's true. When we first looked at our menus, we laughed at the fact that they were charging $4 for bread and butter. And we didn't order it, but we got some (free) bread with our order of meatballs. It was seriously good. Not just the texture, but the flavor.

Anyway, I wouldn't expect free bread and butter with a pizza order.

Here is a good map from WNYC showing median income by census tract: http://project.wnyc.org/acs2011/income.html#13.00/40.7359/-74.0312

Hover to see the data for each tract.

Side note: WNYC's website has great maps. Have you seen their storm surge map? http://project.wnyc.org/storm-surge/

I heard someone on the PATH say that the jitneys operating between JSQ and Gate 51 at PA run until 1:30 am. Is this true?

welcome to the neighborhood, I suppose. if you think that newark is dismal, then perhaps jersey city isn't going to be your cup of tea. skinner's loft, litm, and sawadee are all on that block. two boots is practically next door. porto, miss saigon, bon chon, barcade and nha trang are mere blocks away on newark.

not really sure what you're looking to float your boat when it comes to an eatery on newark, but if you don't like bon chon and nha trang, then i don't think we can be friends.

I agree that John's is a solid option. So is Larry and Joe's. Doesn't Churrasquiera Europa serve lunch? All three are on Newark between Baldwin and Chestnut.

I think Moloney's Meat Market on Newark Ave. has sandwiches, too. (I've only gone there to buy meat.)

Did I miss something-- does it say they will all be rentals? I'm also unclear on the exact location. Would it be the parking lot next to Sanai's? Anyway, it's good that something's happening in JSQ. I hope it turns out well.

Yes, exactly. A Fairway would be amazing. Much wider range of food than Trader Joe's, particularly if you want to cook a meal from scratch. So... tell Fairway to come to Jersey City? :)

Yes, you can request it here:
http://mygovhelpadmin.com/JERSEYCITYN ... .aspx?ssessionid=&rqst=38

Just so you know, it took them about 4 months to trim the tree outside our place; they said that's because they schedule the trimmings based on urgency, not on the order in which requests come in.

Also, when they eventually trimmed the tree, they didn't trim it enough, so I would recommend being home while they do it, if possible.

I used Hoboken-based Kerry Crawford, http://kerrymakeup.com/

She was great, both in terms of professionalism and talent. She travels to the preparation site. I think she can definitely give you the natural look you're describing.

DJ Shakey! Brooklyn-based, traveled to northern NJ for our fall 2011 wedding. I can't say enough about what an awesome job she did. Not only is she well-versed (to say the least) in diverse genres of music, she's also able to listen to your suggestions and bring them to the next level, and to read your guests, and somehow synthesize all this into an awesome party. Our wedding guests ranged from music nerds to people with little interest in music, and everyone had a blast; the next day my relatives were sore from all the dancing. Needless to say, she is not cheesy at all. Check out her website for examples, http://www.campjulie.com/

@ sepecat, I completely agree-- "Why does everything have to look like downtown?"

I like JSQ. Certain blocks aren't nice; I avoid them. I would love to see it improve, but I wouldn't want it to turn into a version of Hoboken (!), downtown, or anything else.

I agree with the posters encouraging support of area businesses, etc.

Also: I wouldn't move to a neighborhood with the hope that it changes into something *I* want. As if the people who've been living there for a while don't count. It annoys me when newcomers (and I am one) act as though they "discovered" a neighborhood.
