Re: Jersey City Council to introduce $587 million budget with zero tax increase

I agree that school funding is the same disaster it was before and after this administration took office .... but, you know as well as anyone, the machinations that this administration has done to keep the city portion of taxes flat while increasing spending by continuing to give out abatements (PILOTS) so the city keeps the portion of taxes from new development that would go to the schools (under funding the schools) for itself and raiding the JCMUA.

and what services have been improved?

Frankly, I find you even more morally compromised than those you accuse. You truly believe this is a problem and continue to benefit from it. If it bothered you so much you would, at a minimum, leave.

the charters are here - https://s3.amazonaws.com/nj-data/Educa ... school_scores_2016_17.csv

charter schools are their own district and not part of the jersey city public school district.

P.S. Having reviewed the data, some charter schools are present, but other charter schools (LCCS, TECCS, METS, University Academy) are absent because they were not listed with Jersey City as the District. Let me know if you know of other schools, and we will update the chart soon.

well it is rather myopic and really limited. though, glad to see that Infinity was included, but why not Liberty HS and other programs? And it's wholly, deficient in covering a variety of charter schools. well, I guess one must start somewhere.

this is an outstanding piece on Jersey City high schools by Bridget D'Souza (Civic Parent - https://civicparent.org/) - http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/ ... for-parents-and-students/. We hoped to move on to middle schools as many feed into high schools programs and if this something that you are interested in doing, I would be happy to work on it with you as along as it is inclusive of all Jersey City middle schools/programs.

the last few times that I have been there, they had new menus and I think I saw a placard that they are now affiliated with the Manalapan and Milburn Diners. Always have liked it. Large, never too crowded, conveniently located by buses and PATH, and plenty of parking, and free sugar cookies by the register.

you are meandering again.

we only moved from 3rd to 8th St. while in Cordero and did not move to McGinley Square until both kids were in MS 4, where their program was for students citywide.

there used to be zone boundary (catchment) maps on the JCBoE website by school, but they now just ask one to call them at - 201-915-6201.

I am not up on the oversubscribing issue, which from recollection was with 3 year pre-k. Not a bad deal - free universal 3 and 4 year old pre-k.

I can accept that! I'm curious, was there any problem with your kids staying in Cordero after you moved out of the neighborhood? And do you know what's going on with the oversubscribing and busing, or even where to find a catchment map? I had a prospective tenant ask me which zone we were in, and while I thought it was still Cordero, I realized I didn't actually know. Conti is fairly close too.

if one has been charging below markets rents, there will be clearly pressure/need to raise rent(s) as costs increase, but for those already charging market rate rent, they have been getting a windfall (as far as taxes as part of cost) and now their margin's will shrink.

on the other hand in areas that are seeing reductions in assessments and taxes, pressure on rents should ease, though I doubt they will be reducing them, unless the market forces them.

well, my children attended PS37 Cordero, 42.5 score, 38th percentile, and MS 4, 18.8 score and 9th percentile. we chose those schools. note that MS 4 includes 5 programs - AEP (accelerated, 4 years in 3), Hope (honors), general education, special needs and bridges (older kids above age for grades) which all are included in the score.

my children (a boy and a girl) have never encountered bullying.

there are great kids, teachers and programs throughout the district schools and there a few not so great of the same.

So no, the scores of those schools do not concern me at all, based on our experiences. and I believe our public district schools are competitive with private and charter options.

I mostly agree with "ecinjc", and with "brewster" who meanders a bit ...

In a trendy but controversial new rating system, New Jersey education officials have for the first time assigned a score of 1 to 100 to each of the state's more than 2,000 public schools.

But if you missed the score in the state's release of annual school report cards this month, you're not alone.

That's because they were excluded from the summary reports the state encourages parents to view online, and were instead placed more than 20 pages deep into each school's detailed report. They combine standardized test results, graduation rates and chronic absenteeism.

Among the worst-rated schools was Trenton's Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, which scored a 1. Among the best schools was Jersey's City's McNair High School, which received a 97 out of 100.

agree. no problem with micro units in general. and no problem with increased density outside of the historic districts, but there is a process for changing zoning and the city in this bailed (which happens time and time again.)

not sure what the beef is with neighborhood associations, they have no legal authority in the zoning or redevelopment process. they organize and advocate on behalf of residents who are members. most are pretty fluid and change over time.

do they represent everyone? no. they represent those that live in an area that show up and choose to participate

I hope they carry some editorial influence with the elected officials and the city as they represent voters.

before you dismiss them, neighborhood associations have played a big role in preserving Liberty State Park, saving the Loew's Jersey City, renovating Hamilton and Van Vorst Parks, creating the Grove Street Path Plaza and contributing to the Jersey City Parks Coalition and more. are they perfect? no. do they make mistakes? yes. but they are more credible and have made a greater difference than any city government or most elected officials of the day.

Thank you. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank Ward E for honoring me with the opportunity to serve as your councilperson. My commitments to you are these: I will work extraordinarily hard to make development work for you. I will work extraordinarily hard to make our day-to-day government work for you. I will stand up for progressive values. And I will partner with those in power without being beholden to them.

For those who voted for another candidate on Nov. 7th or Dec. 5th, you have my commitment to do everything to earn your trust over the coming months and years.

Every senior property owner should be filing for the Senior Freeze (Property Tax Reimbursement) Program and the city should be providing some assistance. Even if one currently does not meet the income or other requirements, it is important to establish ones' base year. Jersey City is not exempt because of PILOTs.

I know there is some sort of income-based rebate and a "senior freeze," but I don't know how that might impact some bills or rebates.

There are lots of hoops you have to jump through and you don't get any relief until many years have passed.

It doesn't look that bad. Over 65, NJ resident for 10 years, paid your property taxes, meet income limits, no 2nd homes etc.

Is JC exempt because of PILOT?

wow, there is a new city website up. on positive side, there are more transactions that can be performed online such as obtaining a residential parking permit.

I went on to look at the agenda for today's city council meeting ... and cannot locate it. I also cannot locate other boards and commissions meetings.

the website either went backwards or is incomplete.

while, I have not been following the city as closely as in the past, our new website was developed by a Canadian company CivicLive, here is a list of their projects - http://www.civiclive.com/featured_projects

correct, but each ward has one equal vote on the city council and I am not the only one that supports candidates in other wards in addition to where they reside. I still live in and am a homeowner in JC. I would be raising this issue ($300K super pac donation) with any candidate in any ward.

I have not seen any related bashing related to gender. I have been "bashed" here on jclist as much as or more than anyone. There were 14 other female candidates running for office in JC back on 11/7 (including Esther Wintner who I have worked with/for on Civic JC) and in 3 of the 4 run offs. The criticisms do not seem gender related.

yes, this is a disbursement, not a contribution as the other poster alleged. and there was a contribution from the managing director of JEN Partners, an NYC private equity firm (that does invest in real estate). however, I do not believe that donor works for the law firm that received the payment. many of the large donations are from friends of his family including his late father. funny, that I have criticized for not being very good at fundraising and almost solely raising money from JC in mostly small donations, so James is getting beat up for doing what I should have been doing which is reaching out to family, friends, friends of family and parents and school contracts. I get it.

As for the rest, is it really that shocking that companies have a government affairs office within legal? I know mine does.

quid pro quo-

http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... sessments_homeowners.html

"The four-story Montgomery Street home was recently renovated, which hiked the property's tax bill by more than $17,000. If the added assessments are canceled, the homeowner would keep the lower tax bill.

That owner is Dixon Advisory, a real-estate investment trust that has been scooping up properties all across Jersey City. Dixon owns at least two dozen of the 485 properties on the list obtained by The Jersey Journal. Of the six properties on the list that would see the largest tax hikes, five are owned by Dixon, which purchased 237 Montgomery St. in 2012, renovated it and initially intended to rent it for $9,990 a month. A video produced by Dixon calls the home "the most luxurious rental" in Jersey City."

Yes, as outside capital pours into our city and seeps into our political system, Conrad's thematic summation of the devastation wrought by a distant colonial capitalism does easily spring to mind.

Even the often referenced Waterfront Project is sponsored by Dixon Leasing, along with our old friends Carepoint.

https://www.thewaterfrontproject.org/our-supporters/

I would hope that their sponsorship of this worthy cause is as equally generous as the combined $1.3 million these two top donors gave to Fulop's super PAC.

The Carepoint money resulted in the Ambulance contract debacle.

What might that Dixon money have bought?

not the facts at all, you posted fake facts.

I met James in 2013, not long after he moved to Jersey City. I believe that he and his fiance at the time (since married) were renting an apartment in the Village neighborhood. I was introduced to him by a fiend of mine, Valerio Luccio, a former president of both the Harsimus Cove Neighborhood Association and Civic JC.

I ran into him again the following summer at Citizens Campaign's "#bethechangeJC" held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Which included workshops that involved identifying priorities and finding evidence based solutions for Jersey City issues.

he obviously has lived and been involved her in Jersey City since at least 2013. His home that they purchased is not a brownstone, but a small frame house west of Coles St. that seen better times at least on the exterior. google the street view.

and in addition to volunteering, I have donated money to his campaign, but not at the level to be itemized individually.

I encourage people to talk to him.

in a city that has a reputation (fair or not) of poor schools, so how do we continue to accept poor library service access.

we use (or would like to use) our library for computers and internet connections, services such as literacy programs for young children, meeting spaces for community groups and students to study and meet with fellow students for homework and projects, and technology ?petting zoos? that provide opportunities to explore 3-D printers and other tech gadgetry. do we have that?

is there a library strategic plan? I have not been able to locate one. our mayor talks about striving to be the ?best mid-size city in the country?, but surely the poor state of our libraries (and most all other infrastructure) does not put us on the map.

construction aside, our library has the most limited hours in the area.

These the hours of the the Bayonne library-
Monday - Thursday 9:00 am - 9:00 pm
Friday - Saturday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Sunday Closed

These are the hours of a nearby suburban library (South Orange)-
Monday 9 am - 9 pm (children: 11 pm - 8 pm)
Tuesday 9 am - 9 pm (children: 9 am - 6 pm)
Wednesday 9 am - 6 pm
Thursday 9 am - 9 pm (children: 9 am - 8 pm)
Friday 9 am - 6 pm
Saturday 9 am - 5 pm
Sunday 1 pm - 5 pm

and there are towns that with even more access.

Running on his ticket condones it, Dan. You did something politically expedient for yourself. And that's probably why you lost. And moved out of downtown.
