Peter link

The above link contains two pictures. One has the statue and base as it appeared recently. The other picture shows the statue with its original base. I remember playing on the original base as a kid but for the life of me can?t remember where it was located. I think it may have been in the middle of the square. On an island in the street? Any old-timers remember?

Anyway in 1966 some asshole kids broke into the old PS # 11. For fun they put books on the stoves in the Home Economics classroom and turned on the gas. The school burned down not much was left. After the new school was finished they moved the statue to it current (as of 2 weeks ago) location. I recall there was some outrage because of the crappy location it was placed. They didn?t like the old building in the background.

Interesting that Epps wants to replace Peter with a statue of MLK. There is a beautiful bronze bust of MLK in the main lobby of the school. It is situated (notice how much that word is being used now) at the top of the main staircase. At night it had lights shining on it so it could be seen from the street. Why is there a need for a full statue of MLK decades after the school was dedicated????? Especially with all of the money cuts just announced!!!

Police make arrest in attempted kidnapping at Short Hills mall

By Thomas Meagher
September 08, 2009, 1:03PM

MILLBURN -- Millburn Police have arrested a Hillside man on attempted kidnapping, carjacking, robbery and other charges in connection with an incident last week involving a Randolph woman who had been shopping at The Mall in Short Hills.
Tracy J. Rogers is suspected of forcing his way into the 56-year-old woman's car around 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 4, pulling out a knife and demanding money, police said.
After the woman turned over cash and jewelry, Rogers told her to drive to an ATM. The woman, though, opened the car door and ran. Another mall patron parking his car nearby assisted her and called police. Rogers then drove off in another vehicle.
Millburn detectives arrested Rogers, 43, in Newark without incident, police said.
"What was very helpful in the investigation was a witness account of the vehicle that we believe the actor fled the scene in," Capt. James Miller said. "A continued investigation led to the arrest of our suspect."
The woman, from Randolph, was not injured.
Rogers also faces charges of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon. Police recovered some of the proceeds taken during the robbery, Miller said.
Rogers is being held at the Essex County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.
He was released from prison in November after serving a nearly two-year term on burglary convictions, according to the state Department of Corrections.

******

On 1/28/2010 at approximately 12:58 PM the Millburn Police assisted security officers of the Mall at Short Hills in the investigation of suspicious activity at the Mall. One juvenile was allegedly to have removed $26.85 worth of coins from the glass ball fountain located inside the Mall. It was further reported that a second juvenile dropped bags of merchandise and ran after being approached by security officers. It is alleged that he bags contained stolen merchandise from Hollister valued at $336.80 and Abercrombie & Fitch valued at $56.70. Both juveniles, age 15, from Newark were taken into custody. One youth was charged with theft, shoplifting and receiving stolen property. The second juvenile was charged with shoplifting and receiving stolen property.

******
On 1/25/2010 at approximately 3:32 PM the Millburn Police responded to Polo Ralph Lauren, located at the Mall at Short Hills on a report of a theft that occurred on 1/22/2010. Surveillance video revealed a man concealing a total of three black nylon utility jackets under his own coat and exiting the store. The jackets have a combined value of $2,985.00.

3 arrested, 2 officers injured in fight at Paramus mall

Wednesday, December 16, 2009

PARAMUS ? Three people were arrested and two police officers were treated for minor injuries after a fight broke out inside the Hollister store at the Garden State Plaza mall on Tuesday night, authorities said.
The fight was reported around 7:50 p.m. by mall security guards, said police Chief Richard Cary.
Jazmine Cole, 18, and a 17-year-old boy, both from Teaneck ? were taken into custody after they allegedly spat at Officer Marc Glantschnig and a security guard, Robert Acito, Cary said. An 18-year-old Teaneck woman whose name was not immediately available was arrested and taken to Hackensack University Medical Center to be treated for cuts and bruises, Cary said.

Cole was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer. The 17-year-old was charged with simple assault. Cary expected charges to be filed against the third suspect.
Glantschnig and a second responding officer, Gregory Hooper, were taken to an area hospital, Cary said. Glantschnig complained of shoulder pain while Hooper said his knee was bothering him. Neither injury appeared to be serious.

"Some of the patrons apparently brushed up against each other and there was an exchange of words, and the dispute led to an assault," Cary said.

Re: PUBLIC NOTICE’s like the JC SFY 2010 Municipal Budget
Home away from home
Home away from home

Sorry if the thread subject was confusing (along with the numbers not being lined up) Yes the purpose of my thread was 2 fold. I wanted to get the public notice budget summary posted which had the Feb 24th date and where to pick up copies of the full budget. I also wanted to let everyone know that the State/ County/ City (all cities around JC) post (hide) their public notices in the paper copy of the JJ. I am betting that many of the DTJC newcomers (and old-timers) don?t even bother picking up a paper copy of the JJ.

Like I said up above maybe someone can get Steve F. to propose a resolution to have the public notices put on County and City official websites. It is like we are living in the 1920?s having notices posted in a paper copy of a newspaper that doesn?t have much of a circulation. Put it in the paper along with a link.

The DTJC newcomers are probably the best and bightest financial people in the country. (don?t get a big head) A lot of you work on Wall Street. You would think that the city would tap into that talent. Instead they appoint some JC political hack to do the books.

Getting back to the notices in the last three days here are examples of what was hidden in the paper copy of the JJ.

- Entertainment license renewals for almost every bar in DTJC...Light Horse Tavern, Michael Anthony?s, O?Hara?s Downtown, York Street Tavern, Puccini?s, Lamp Post, Ringside Lounge, just to mention a few. These are the notices that say if you have an objection to the renewal send in a letter within 20 days of the date of the publication of the notice.

- I see that there are some people on this site that have catering businesses. There were two notices looking for bids for food services for a nursery on Westside Ave. and today one looking for bids for the food service at Bayonne pool for the next 5 years.

- meeting notices...the JC Redevelopment Agency will hold its next meeting on Feb 16 at 6:00 pm 14th floor of 30 Montgomery St.....Hudson County Mental Health Board 2010 meeting schedule is posted....

- all kinds of requests for bids for street repaving, trucks, bus services, it software, and elevator work in Hoboken.

- yesterdays JJ had a very long notice of sale (bid for bonds?) by Hudson County for 32 million dollar County College Bonds. It went on for pages all kinds of legal mumbo jumbo do they think that the average citizen of JC will ever see it or if they did read it actually know what it all means? (I don?t and I would bet that 225,000 out of a city of 230,000 doesn't either)

You young people from DTJC are the ones who should be reading these public notices....you have the energy and smarts to get things done!!

Interesting analysis of the summary. Nice that people on the site could describe what it all means for the ones who don?t have a clue. Maybe someone could ask Steve F. to propose having the full budget put on the official JC site, instead of having to go down to City Hall to pick up paper copies of it. I bet you guys could really dig into it!

I don?t know if you guy?s (the newcomers) get the paper copy of the Jersey Journal or not. I also don?t know if the JC public notices are published on any County/City website. It seems like the paper JJ is where the County and City (JC, Hob, Bay) place their public notices. For example: Sheriff sales, Auctions, Bids for contracts, Issuance/Renewal of Entertainment Licenses (and the hearing dates if you want to object them), Zoning Notices, interesting stuff.

Like today Weds 2/10 there is notice for : An NHRFR (North Hudson Regional Fire & Rescue) auction where you can pick up a few fire trucks, jeeps, or cars. (what hipster wouldn?t want a freaking fire truck?) A JC ?Notice to Bidders? to furnish Automotive Batteries. A whole crap load of license renewal application notices for all of the DTJC bars/ restaurants.

(FYI- this was in today?s paper JJ, I typed it in, I double checked it. Tried to get numbers to line up sorry, if WM can line up numbers great, or someone line them up in a reply)

The wife of Jersey City Mayor Anthony Cucci, Anna, died in a tragic rail accident while travelling with her husband in the mountains of Peru. Jaime Vazquez, then a Jersey City Councilman, was on the same train. He perhaps was saved from serious injury by quickly lowering his head down below the back of the seat. A group of Maoist terrorists, the Shining Path, were at first believed to be responsible for the wreck. But, after a lengthy investigation, Peruvian authorities charged the engineer with operating the train while drunk.

Silly?everyone from JC knows for food shopping you hit the Stop & Shop Super Store in the South Cove Commons in Bayonne. (and for you yuppies and hipsters it even has its own Starbucks and PNC branch inside!) (for the lovers a florist)(for me a bakery)

The Commons also has ?

- Franks movie theater
- Subway
- wireless phone stores
- tanning (for you guido?s)
- medical clinic
- Wendy?s
- A J Wright
- Game Stop
- Laundromat
- Staples
- Hallmark
- 10 East (Japanese)
- Houlihan's

There is a light rail stop across the highway from the Commons for the wheel-less crowd. While you are there you can take a walk on the water walkway. The entrance is over past 10 East. It has beautiful views of the private golf course ($$). Also nice to see when a cruise ship is docked.

PS - Bayonne also has a nice new Shop-Rite that opened in midtown.

In 1998 when Mayor Schundler negotiated the 15 year Comcast deal I think he made them throw in a JC public access channel. Don?t you remember ?Bret TV? his call-in show? It was pretty good.

I also remember watching the boring Council Meetings. The members would sit there with a sack of papers in front of them and they would go through them in minutes approving everything. It was interesting when a developer came in to give a presentation. (I bet all of the pols were sitting there dreaming of yachts and vacation homes)

Car crash, foot chase leads to Jersey-City teen's arrest
Tuesday, February 02, 2010

A suspected drug dealer was arrested in Jersey City Sunday night after a car crash, foot chase, and tussle with officers, reports said.

Police tried to pull over the 16-year-old teen, who was driving a Maxima, at 11:03 p.m., after he turned from Johnston Avenue onto Halladay Street without signaling, reports said.

But the Erie Street teen jumped out of his still-moving car, allowing it to crash into two parked cars, and ran into a second floor apartment on Halladay Street and hid in a closet, reports said.

After cops gained entry to the apartment, the teen knocked two officers to the ground, causing a minor injury to one of the officers, reports said.

As the cops tried to cuff the boy, a 15-year-old girl in the apartment started hitting the officers, reports said.

The boy then ran out of the apartment, but other officers caught up with him, reports said.

Officers found 37 glass vials of suspected cocaine, 46 small bags of suspected heroin, and $91 in cash in the boy's jacket, reports said.

The 15-year-old girl was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and obstruction of law.

You probably already know about the below JC online tax inquiry. If not its a nice tool to see how much your neighbors pay in taxes. It gives a history of what the taxes were on the property, you can see how much they went up over the years.

You can also put in the big name places like Goldman Sachs see how much they pay. (funny you see the word abatement on them!!!!!)

http://www.cityofjerseycity.com/finance.aspx?id=1156

Also FYI:

2 bedroom condo SH ? taxes around $4,500
- Maintenance fees $140 a month (gatehouse, guard, snow removal, landscaping, pool, clubhouse, walkway, tennis courts, tot lots, parking, etc)

2 family heights - taxes around $7,000

Here?s another..over in that big empty lot on the corner of Rt 440(1&9) and Comunipaw Ave. There was a motel named the Hudson Motor Lodge (yellow sign is still there) next to it going toward Newark was a diner called The Colony Diner. Both were ripped down because of soil contamination. I recall two attempts to build on the lot. One was an office tower with retail space the other years later was a futuristic Audi dealer. Both deals fell through.

Ahhh The Alp?s ..I recall in the late 70?s JC was getting so bad the old folks wouldn?t come out of their houses. The Alp?s was losing big time business. So The Alp?s started a door to door limo service for them to come and eat.

Ok a little help from the old-timer?s here. When I was a kid we use to go to a ?fancy? restaurant over by the Medical Center. I thought it was on Balwin but from looking at a Google map of ?Summit and Fairmount Jersey City? it looks like it was on the corner there. I do remember it was on a corner property and it took up a lot of land. It was a beautiful old wooden mansion or funeral home that was converted to a restaurant. I think it started with a ?B? . It was ripped down in the 70?s and replaced with a few ugly 2 family houses. If you look at the Goggle map you can see what I think is the foundation outline of the restaurant in the green grass. Does anyone remember it?

A Jersey City man is in critical condition, possibly paralyzed after being shot in the spine

By The Jersey Journal
January 27, 2010, 10:19AM

A Jersey City man was left in critical condition and possibly paralyzed by a bullet that "fragmented" his spine on a GREENVILLE street Monday night, officials said.

When police arrived at Grant and Ocean avenues at 8:30 p.m. they found the 39-year-old York Street man lying face up in the crosswalk, reports said. The victim told police he couldn't feel his legs, reports said. Officers found a spent 9mm round nearby.

The York Street man was rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center. Doctors told police the bullet was lodged in the man's spine and it could not be removed due to the severity of the damage. At the hospital, the victim said he felt nothing from the waist down, reports said.

The officers noted that immediately after the shooting there was a report of shots being fired at Claremont Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the Jersey City police tip line at (201) 547-JAIL.

Late night you have to watch your back. The Broadway / Tonnelle spot would be great if you are like your name says from India(2US). Two blocks to JS Path, one block to Newark Ave. (Indian Square)

The only safe place in JC are the two gated and guarded developments. Society Hill and Port Liberte. (funny I thought GnomeGeneral was describing Society Hill in JC not Bedminster.)

PS ? Downtown has the highest overall crime rating as per the JCPD website. (yes you guys win because of the total number of larcenies, that puts you over the top).

Just thought of another fancy ?jacket and tie? place. Remember the old Divine Fairmont Hotel on Duncan and the Boulevard? I think I had my Communion and graduation luncheon?s there.

Newbies check out this website ..looks like it has stuff from 1962. Cool pictures. See there were signs of ?affluent? life before you guys showed up. Check out those clothes!!

As I recall a developer purchased the Hotel in the 70?s(?) and was going to rip it down. Somehow the city/county got involved turned it into an old folk?s home. Thank God!

Father Divine?.

George Baker Jr. (c. 1876 ? September 10, 1965), also known as Father Divine, was an African American spiritual leader[1] from about 1907 until his death. His full self-given name was Reverend Major Jealous Divine, and he was also known as "the Messenger" and George Baker early in his life. He founded the International Peace Mission movement, formulated its doctrine, and oversaw its growth from a small and predominantly black congregation into a multiracial and international church.

Controversially, Father Divine claimed to be God. Some contemporary critics also claimed he was a charlatan, and some suppose him to be one of the first modern cult leaders. However, Father Divine made numerous contributions toward his followers' economic independence and racial equality.
