Not to turn this into a 7th St Deli discussion but they were a frequent breakfast/lunch place for us - egg sammies and ramen were our faves. Anyone know if they are opening something elsewhere?

Thanks all.
We'll have ramen as well; I've tried 7th Street ramen and you're right, the quality was going down the last few months.
You'll probably have to get your egg sammy fix somewhere else though :(

Good luck, and excited to try. Just don't call ANYTHING a sammy. Awful, stupid trend in food circles to use these "cutesy" words.

I would venture that at least half a million people "endure" this drive daily, but probably much more. It is about 20 minutes. Or, 40 with bad traffic. Not sure why you think that is particularly hellish. Care to explain?

All service vests are "fake". There is no such thing as an official service vest, or an "official" service dog designation. It's all one big scam, really.

As of today, there are no requirements for licensing, certification or identification of service dogs. And, the animals are not required to wear special collars, vests or harnesses. This is a huge, glaring hole in the ADA laws.

By using an asinine metric! What does the number of soccer clubs within 75 miles of a city have to do with access to soccer?? If they had said within city limits, or within 10 or 20 miles, maybe you have a valid metric there. Imagine having to drive your kid to the outskirts of Philly (or, to Montauk!) so they could play soccer. Completely idiotic (and, most likely arbitrary) distance. And, their cost metric is just as idiotic! They factor in gas price and car insurance, but they don't factor in ancillary expenses like parking ($$ in these areas) and tolls (applicable in some areas, certainly here).

Aldi is the parent company of Trader Joe's. I assume they would carry a few similar items but not branded with the Trader Joe's logo.

Actually, it is not quite that simple. In fact, the Aldi supermarkets in the US are NOT AT ALL related to Trader Joe's. The Aldi supermarkets in the US are owned/operated by Aldi Sud, while the Trader Joe's supermarkets are owned by Aldi Nord. The two companies are completely separate and the result of a feud between the two founding brothers over selling cigarettes in the original Aldi stores, which they jointly owned/operated. After the rift, they split up operations. My understanding is the feud continues to this day, with cousins on opposite sides continuing the family rivalry.

In any case, both TJs and Aldi score highly in consumer surveys. I believe TJs takes the top spot, and Aldi is like #5. So, they are both obviously doing something right. In case you are wondering, the other spots in top 5 go to Whole Foods, Publix and Wegmans.

I wonder if this type of system would work from the Heights to Hoboken train station for example. Maybe even getting people across the Hudson from LSP or thereabouts.

The span between LSP and the Battery Park area is just shy of a mile. That's a VERY long distance to cover on a "flat level" cable car system. I am not sure that it is feasible. But, in addition, the construction costs could be incredibly high, necessitating very high per-ride fares. London already has their own version of this idea, and it has been an abject failure. The per ride cost is close to $7 (with a very generous discount for frequent users that pegs the cost at about $2.50.) Guess what? The cable car currently runs at 10% capacity. These ideas are great on paper, but they never deliver on the promises/dreams of their proponents. Once you ride this, you have to get to work, or home. How do you get people from LSP to their homes? Once in Battery Park City, how do you get to work? You would have to walk over to whatever subway station is more convenient for your final destination. When you add up the time and costs, it simply isn't worth it for most people.

Dude, on a bus, even a someone on a wheelchair needs to be secured, so they are not tossed around. To that end, there are areas within the bus that are specially equipped to secure a wheelchair in place. Those areas have seats that get lifted to gain access to the special mechanism. If someone is sitting there, they are required to get up and give up their previously held seats. Some people just LOVE to play dumb and try not to move or get up.

Traffic?? Are you SERIOUSLY claiming they are not affected by traffic??? You are CRAZY and IGNORANT. Any Philadelphia resident will tell you that traffic is AWFUL, particularly during rush hour. And, within the city core, it can slow down to a crawl at all kinds of hours. At night, traffic is very heavy in the entertainment/restaurant areas (old city, city center, etc).

Re: "sixth borough" - no thanks

I have never understood why so many people get riled up over this moniker. It is, in fact, an apt description of JC vis-a-vis its proximity to NYC. For DTJC, and neighboring areas, getting into Manhattan is as quick, or quicker, than all other boroughs.

Nobody is claiming JC is an actual borough of NYC, and it seems obvious to me that the moniker is simply a "cheeky" way to describe JC's proximity and relation to NYC. To deny that JC, and particularly DTJC, is anything short of highly influenced by Manhattan, and NYC at large, is being dishonest. JC's development, growth, and gentrification (and, thus, its general fortunes) is closely tied and related to NYC. If that bothers you, get over it.

Marullos, I think the last comment is the most sound. Do not take on the responsibility of cleaning/remediating the tank and soil. It will be expensive and it IS the responsibility of the owner. I wouldn't even offer to pay any portion of the costs, let alone half. They have a LEGAL responsibility to disclose this tank to any potential buyer. Sooner or later, they will take care of the cleanup and remediation if they really want to sell. Based on your comments here, I would guess that the seller KNOWS you are a motivated buyer and is probably hoping or assuming to use that to their own advantage. Hold firm on your offer, and put on your best poker face. They will fold. They don't have a choice.

Hey, Atsushi: thank you for the nuanced review! It's nice to get your perspective, as a true Japanese native. Much appreciated. Quote:
Atsushi wrote: My wife and I went to Koro Koro last night, and it was very good. Background cultural info for people who may not be familiar with Japanese culture (I?m Japanese): Rice ball is called Onigiri or Omusubi in Japan. It has been the most classic lunch people in Japan bring to picnic and outing since the ancient time: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onigiri Rice balls this restaurant serves are similar to what you can buy at convenience stores in Japan with a special plastic wrap to keep the seaweed dry and crisp, except: They make them fresh (on the spot) manually one by one. (Rice balls you can buy at a convenience store are made by machines in a food factory and probably several hours old by the time they get to the stores.) I thought that because they make their rice balls on the spot and serve them right away, plastic wrap is not necessary (indeed some customers were having a hard time unwrapping it correctly). I believe that for those orders to stay, serving them without a wrap on a plate would be more authentic and intimate. And for those orders to go, plastic wrap should be an option as some people prefer seaweed to be crisp and others prefer wet (moist). What?s embedded in a rice ball (content) is what gives individual rice ball unique flavor. Traditionally, only a few kinds of content were used in Japan, like pickled plum or salted salmon. But in the last 30 years, many new contents have been invented and have become popular. Most of the contents that they serve appear to be their original and definitely with western twists (They even had one with Indian twist and Cuban twist; next time I shall try those!). I tried those rice balls with western twists, and they were really good. (I was reminded of Ramen noodles served at Union Republic. Their ramen is definitely with western twist. They may not be strictly traditional, but there is nothing wrong with that, in my opinion. There are many kinds of food Japan has imported from the west and has given them her own twist, so I have no objections with Americans giving their own twists to Japanese food. Some of these ideas are really unique, and native Japanese would never have been able to come up with. I enjoy American twists on Japanese food in general.) I also tried their miso-soup and Japanese potato salad. Both were very good. Like rice balls, what you put in a soup makes miso-soup unique, in addition to type of miso (fermented beat paste) and stock (or called Dashi). They put eggplant and seaweed in theirs, which they said that it?s from Okinawa. I?ve never been there, so I can?t specifically comment on that, but I thought that eggplant worked well and the soup tasted like authentically home-cooked. Of course, it wasn?t quite as good as what my mother makes, but I?ll give it an A minus. (Every Japanese person thinks their mother makes the best miso-soup , so A minus is pretty darn good;) I tasted soy sauce in the Japanese potato salad, which was great. My mother normally doesn?t put soy sauce in her potato salad, but some of us, myself included, pour small amount of soy sauce on it upon being served. When I make potato salad, I sometimes put some wasabi sauce in it, and it would be great if they add that to the menu. Last night air conditioner wasn?t working, so it was really hot, but that?s a really minor point. I?m sure they will address that sooner or later. I remember hearing that they can accept cash only at this time but that they will be able to accept credit card soon. We?ve been looking forward to opening of this place for a few months, and overall, my wife and I were very satisfied, and we are looking forward to going there again and try other things on the menu.

Unlike your parents, mine taught me manners AND how to think rationally.

In the interest of clarity and accuracy, I am replying to my own message. I should have said that there is no BLANKET ban on making turns. There is a sign prohibiting left turns from Grand onto Barrow, M-F, 6 AM to 10 AM.

BTW, the placement of the sign is ATROCIOUSLY bad. A sign banning left turns during certain days/times that is placed on the FAR RIGHT. Unless you are actually looking for it, you would never see it.

In any case, my original complaint is no less valid. My incident happened around 10:30.

Getting this back on track (or, should I even bother?!)

This morning, while driving to the Grove Street area, I tried to make a turn onto Barrow St while heading East on Grand St. What do you know? Some knucklehead, riding east on the sidewalk at a really high speed, decided to cross Barrow, while I am making the turn, and what do you think happened? I had to jam my brakes so I wouldn't hit him. This is precisely one of the many reasons why people SHOULD NOT ride on sidewalks. The kicker? There was a policeman standing on the corner. Did he say anything to the cyclist? No! Did he say anything to me? No! Did he even notice?? Who knows.

It's not just that it isn't safe to your own person, or that of others, but cyclists who choose to ride on sidewalks, especially downtown, are also putting motorists at risk of being involved in an accident, a potentially serious or deadly one.
