Why are Jersey City taxpayers stuck paying this enormous bill?

Don't worry guys. The unaccountable Port Authority just wasted $60 million and no one knows how or why. Our taxdollars and fare money is being put to good use.

But don't expect anyone to actually get fired over this. After all, $60 million of taxpayer money is like monopoly money, right??

We do, but between a corrupt and unaccountable Port Authority, and various bootlickers who post on this forum repeatedly defending the PATH and telling us how lucky we are, don't expect change anytime soon.

I think it's just you. Whenever I take the PATH into the city during morning rush hours, it crawls so slow that walking may be faster.

I went to the pizza place today and thought it was excellent. Two slices for $2.50, and the quality exceeded most of what you can find in JC or NYC, especially for that price range. (not talking about a place like Razza). Maybe I caught it on a good day.

Either way, I'll definitely be back.

JC is a great town with much of its appeal based on its proximity to NYC.

However, if I worked in NYC on a regular basis, I would NOT live here. Quite simply, the PATH sucks ass on a regular basis. It simply takes far too long to wait for trains, the trains themselves are incredibly slow, and they are packed 24/7.

And with the Port Authority the way it is, things only get worse, not better.

Not sure but why not just keep adding $40 and $20 until you hit your goal?

Think the Port Authority would do anything remotely close to this? An attempt at actually providing communication and explaining what's going on?

Maybe after the current corrupt leaders retire with their million dollar severance+benefits packages and a new (probably just as connected) Chief Exec pledges for change.

Sent the PATH a message asking how they could justify cutting back service amid record ridership. Amazingly, got a prompt reply:

Hi, Dan ?

Thanks for reaching out.

We are very aware of the growing demand for PATH in the region, and have a number of modernization and capital projects in process to help expand capacity. Though we lost a few months of progress on these programs due to Superstorm Sandy, work is now being done again. You can read about some of these programs here: http://www.panynj.gov/path/path-modernization.html

In the near future, we are also planning on expanding the platform capacity for stations on the Newark ? WTC line to allow for 10-car trains. We are currently only able to run 8-car trains on that line due to shorter platforms at Grove Street Station. With the purchase of additional cars, we will also be able to expand our schedule once the Automatic Train Control signal program has been completed.

In the meantime, targeted service reduction is necessary in order to allow for work on these capital programs to continue, and for post-Sandy repairs to be completed. Our Transportation Division takes a number of factors into account when suggested changes to the schedule, including travel demand forecasts, ridership patterns, passenger feedback, and connections to other services, to name a few. We appreciate your understanding and patience with the new schedule.

I hope this information is helpful.

Sincerely,
Chris

PATH Customer Service

I told you they'd say some BS response that people have no way of verifying. This is what happens when there is absolutely zero accountability. You can get away with saying anything.

Do they seriously think people believe that by changing Sunday service from every 15 to every 20 min, this will do absolutely ANYTHING to hasten post-Sandy repairs?

Another update:

I called and spoke with someone on the phone at NJM. According to her, the reason this is "through the roof" (my words) is because Jersey City is now considered a "coastal area" (thanks Sandy!).

I had the lady run a second quote with exactly the same coverage as my current Travelers insurance, and here's the comparison:

Travelers: $540 / year, $500 deductable;
NJM: $817 / year, $1500 deductable (high because of JC is "coastal area")

I'm shocked and disappointed. In addition to good customer service, I always though NJM had the best price too. I was hoping to save a hundred or so going forward

Can I just chalk it up to bad timing (thanks to Sandy)? Does anyone who has NJM currently see their premium go up (significantly)?

I use the Philadelphia Contributionship for renters insurance. The other day I got a letter in the mail from them saying the average Tenants policy will see a rate increase of 1.9% for next year. The average Condominiums policy will see a rate increase of 9.4% for next year. But the average homeowners policy will see a rate change of 28.8%!

I think the take home message is living in JC will screw you for homeowner's insurance no matter where you go.

I've used a wide variety of public transportation systems in the US and Europe, and PATH is roughly the same service as everything else. I agree they don't communicate well, but otherwise I just really don't understand where all this antipathy comes from.

MTA is good, but also has its own problems -- e.g. no viable direct connections between Brooklyn and Queens (G train is a joke), repeated budget shortfalls, opaque financial management, disruptive repairs (especially on weekends), perpetual inability to build the 2nd Ave line, lines can flood at the drop of a hat....

PATH management isn't responsible for capacity problems during rush hour; there's only so many trains that can go through the tunnels. Christie also put the big kibosh on adding another rail tunnel, which would have helped relieve crowding. And if you want a packed train, try the 4/5/6 during rush hour some time.

By the way, the average overnight schedule on the MTA? 20 minutes.

Paris Metro? London Underground? Boston? SF? Atlanta? They close every night for about 4 hours.

This is not to say the PATH train is perfectly run. It's just nowhere near as bad as the haters proclaim. The level of vitriol would be inexplicable... if it was anywhere other than a community forum.

Yeah, the average schedule on the MTA is 20 minutes overnight. Not all day Sunday! That's kind of the problem. Especially because it was never really announced in advance and there is no reason for it other than to save money and pad their bloated salaries.

That's great. As you can see by my name, I'm not a fan of the PATH train. Lived in Hudson county for a decade and I have nothing positive to say about this transit system.

That's not really fair. What public transit system are you comparing Path to? Generally speaking, everybody hates the transit system they use regularly. Many people I know who have moved from outer boroughs to JC think the Path is much better than MTA.

I think the Path has major communication challenges, and the technology needs to be slightly upgraded (signal system), but generally its very reliable. What are you comparing Path to?

While "nothing positive to say" is definitely an exaggeration, I certainly understand where that poster is coming from. I think you are being far too generous to the PATH (really the Port Authority) by classifying their problems as mere "communication challenges."

Their behavior is deliberate, and stems from the extensive political connections of the Port Authority's decision makers and resulting lack of any accountability to anyone.

This whole schedule change is a perfect microcosm of how the Port Authority operates. Make decisions in complete secrecy, spring them on the general public mere days in advance (so there's no real time to complain), and provide no explanation whatsoever. Do you think it's a coincidence that the printed schedules were released Friday and go into effect on Sunday? Most of them will have the weekend off so too late to complain now.

Remember the complete PATH shutdown a couple weeks ago? I have a hard time believing any transit system authority would shut down the entire rail system, without warning, without real explanation, for hours at a time. And of course there is no follow-up.

When I created this thread, the reason I said "hopefully this does not mean trains will run less frequently" is because I am conditioned to believe that ANY time there is an announcement about the PATH it is negative. Sadly my fears were realized.

I can tell you the real reasons behind this service reduction:
1. Because they can.
2. It probably saves some money.
BTW the WTC line is also moving to 20 minute service on Sunday.

The political connections and lack of accountability in the Port Authority run so deep that don't kid yourself into thinking any "expose" will change a thing. People have been writing about this garbage for years and nothing changes. Here's one example of many. http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/pa ... en_DJsm7eMFXRpXeG6eN8ZVAI

And notice how they buried this huge service reduction into a single line change. Again, intentional. If they bother to make any kind of statement at all they'll probably say something about how it's necessary for track maintenance, or some other statement that people have no way of verifying.

And other posters here are right. PATH trains going into and out of NYC seem to be packed at any time of day. A tremendous service reduction is the last thing we need. Combined with scheduled fare increases. But with all of the political connections, don't hold your breath waiting for a thing to change.

New PATH train schedule

Just saw the message at the bottom of one of the TVs in the PATH stations. It says all trains will have new schedules effective Sunday.

The message directs you to the Port Authority website, or the preprinted timetables they have in various stations. However, I didn't see anything on the Port Authority website.

Hopefully this does not mean trains will run less frequently.

Would you be able to drop it off at the Ward E HQ downtown (best option)? Or give it to one of the many Fulop volunteers who ate going to be out this weekend? Just tell the volunteer to please turn it in to leaders at HQ for submission.

I deleted that post because I think I was just stupid. Though there was no separate envelope, I noticed an instruction that said detach the completed application, tape it shut, and put it in the mail. So I did the first two steps and plan to put it in the mail tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get a real ballot in the mail.

What we are saying is please do not do that. Because we do not trust the Clerk's office to not "lose" it iff you mail it to them directly. If you take it to Fulop Ward E HQ, they will time stamp it and hand it in in person, thus guaranteeing you get it processed. Then if you don't receive your ballot in the mail, you have recourse with our help because we'll have a copy of your application with the time stamp on it as proof of submission.

Sure you can still mail it to the clerk directly, but be advised they are trying to suppress votes like yours by not processing your app in time.

The application has Fulop's return address on it. Hence Healy "calling foul." So I'd hope it will be safely delivered and I'll get my ballot.

Also, there is no envelope. It is literally a handout thing that you just tape shut and it has Fulop's address printed on one side along with a box in the top right corner that says postage paid by addressee.

Didn't you see the owner's quotes about JC? He said that the clientele in JC was very low class compared to the LES location and the JC place would be closing for good soon.

While some of the owner's friends have rushed to his defense on this board, I think the extreme length of closing combined with zero communication to the public means it's safe to say the owner really doesn't care about the JC location.

I don't care either way, and liked the tacos there. I'll go back if it ever opens. But at the same time, I realize that the owner hates JC.

Re: Taqueria

I'm a big Taqueria fan as well but I read the following on Yelp shortly before Hurricane Sandy.

"I wrote a bad review about this place and the manager(PHIL B.) had the nerve to write me back calling me "chubby/fat" and said that I should just eat somewhere else. This place cannot handle bad reviews. Instead of taking the advice from our reviews and making the place better, they choose to shoot insults at people. I reported him to Yelp. Also I later found out that some one else had written a bad review a while ago and this was what the manager wrote on http://www.jclist.com

"taqueria downtown is so busy and runs well enough on its own, so we can focus on taqueria LES. Can't even tell you the difference in class in the clientele in NYC than that in Jersey. So don't worry, it's just a matter of time before we close the jersey store.""

I wonder if the prolonged closing is merely a strange coincidence or the owner wanted this all along. Does anyone know where the thread is that the reviewer is referring to? The review is still there if you wanted to check.
