The chicks always dug the bad boys from Staten Island. I guess if you had muscles and disco clothes (and mustaches and gold chains and nice shoes) they didn?t care about the accent. (anyone remember Montego err I mean Mont-guido Bay in Belmar?) We had two dudes from Staten Island in our summer house for a few years. They kept a chart of their conquests on the wall. They actually got into a fist fight over who had the most pickups at the end of the summer. (I guess it was the steroids kicking in)

PS ? I hated the disco years!

Re: Embracing Jersey City's Waterfront

crush and lost?too funny

Yeah JC has come a long way, nice to hear that the younger set is seeing it in a better light. Like I said all of my friends beat it out of JC for the burbs and left me holding the flag. Funny thing is all of their kids are now working in NYC and living in?.YES JC!

(keeping on the JC water front topic?.)

Another JC waterfront story is LSP. I have been going to LSP since day one. It was a real ghost town for years and years. I would tell people from the burbs and blogs that they have got to go to LSP one of the best kept secrets in the tri-state area. How can you beat the views while jogging or biking.? the NY skyline, Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island! Sad that I always had to throw in the ?don?t worry it is completely safe? part. I used to jog or bike around and then relax on the benches directly across from the WTC. At dusk the sight of the WTC was amazing. (hey what?s up with the nasty LSP 9/11 memorial what a mess! )

Anyway glad to see that the park is really getting used now by a lot of people. LSP was a winner idea great use of the JC waterfront for the public. (thank goodness Bret?s LSP Water Park idea failed!)

Funny story I tell all of the time ..years ago I was down by the LSP rail road terminal. I was just sitting there taking in the sights. A couple from the burbs came up to me and asked me if I knew the names of a certain group of NYC buildings that they pointed out. I almost sh** myself but kept a straight face. They were pointing to the buildings in downtown JC! (I swear it?s true) I straightened them out and really laid it on about how JC is up and coming. They were amazed and said that their daughter was graduating college soon and would be working in NYC. They said they were going to look into housing in downtown JC. Great!

Yeah nobody liked good old JC. I on the other hand was always a proponent of JC even in her darkest days. (JC love it or leave it! Sadly most of my close friends did..leave it) But I will confess this sin to you all. Living in JC in the late 70?s early 80?s was not cool to some especially the chicks. Do you know what it was like to finally get a nibble in the summertime down at the Guido infested Jersey Shore only to lose the precious catch? When I opened my mouth and said I was from Jersey City in my best JC accent I lost the catch hook, line, and sinker. Devastating! (you burb girls err I mean your mother?s were cruel back then)

When I changed my address to Chatham or Basking Ridge I was fine. (thank God it wasn?t my looks after all!!) Although do you know how hard it is to try and cover up a JC guy saying beer? I almost got busted a few times. ? I?ll have two beeeeeeer?s please?. I never asked for a second date for a Saturday it always had to be on a Sunday I was too afraid my Satday would slip out. ?Hey how about we go out again on Satday night? ..ahhhhhh.

Re: Embracing Jersey City's Waterfront

Newport City, New Jersey (or Newport City, New York) is a 10 billion dollar private project no public input. You have to give LeFrak credit for seeing gold in the JC waterfront and buying 80 properties. The stupid city and state had no vision at the time. LeFrak didn?t give two sh***s about Jersey City he only cared about his self contained "new town" Newport City and how New Yorkers would get over to shop in the mall.

Interesting piece cbs news from 1997?.(again stupid city and state for not getting the land!)

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi ... 9953443/?tag=content;col1

?After negotiating with more than 80 landowners - including bankrupt railroads he soon accumulated 600 acres, 200 of which go to the pier head line and include the riparian rights to develop the shoreline, and 400 of which are upland and buildable. The site runs from Hoboken southward, roughly from Eighteenth Street to Sixth Street at Jersey City's shoreline, and inland to Luis Munoz Marin Boulevard, formerly known as Henderson Street.?

That mall killed JC believe it or not there were still some descent stores around the city. WTF a massive suburban mall in a city? Talk about draining the cities retail. When the mall opened and starting to catch on they starting closing. Was anyone around in the early days? That mall was a ghost town for years. It was weird going there and not seeing many people walking around. If they had to build the mall they should have built it on the water front and the ugly high rise buildings where the mall is now. It could have been something like the pier mall in AC. Big open windows on the water front with views of NYC.

The Bay Front project on the other water front is going to be the best thing going in the city. Looks like it is really well planned out. The view from the other side of JC is not bad at all. I go down to my friends place in SH for a swim in the summer. The view down Newark Bay towards the Turnpike extension bridge at dusk is really cool?wide open views. (the blue sky is not blocked with the stupid NYC skyline)

Also the new golf course and park over on 1 & 9 is going right up to the water front. Interesting industrial views.

I would give you the nice bayfronjersey city website but?.

bayfrontjerseycity.com expired on 04/15/2011 and is pending renewal or deletion

?way to go JC..let the one interesting future project web site expirer!!

Here?s a nj.com piece..at least it has one drawing?

http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... il_oks_100acre_devel.html

Oh and about the Newport City, New York crack. In the 80?s it was called Newport City, New Jersey. It was also advertised as Newport City, New York in some ads. There was NO mention of Jersey City in any advertisements. They even took us out of the directions. They said get off the Turnpike at exit 14C. I think Manzo was a thorn in LeFrak?s side he made them take out the City in Newport City. Made them start saying Newport section of Jersey City. Made them put exit 14C Jersey City in the directions, and Jersey City on the Path stops, etc. Manzo stopped the whole project a few times saying that LeFrak was covering up the contaminated soil or dumping it in the river. I think LeFrak was talking about backing out at one point.

?"I had to convince people we were part of Manhattan and we had to eradicate the Hudson River," LeFrak laughed about his Newport marketing efforts, which have been rewarded all over the site.??

Any old-timers remember any of this? I think I have the old advertisements locked away somewhere..funny. I think Port Liberty did the same thing those ads were even funnier. They boasted that Julio Iglesias was buying there so you should to. (I was tempted indeed!)

I am one of the morons that take my time when I have the STOP sign and slow down when I have the right of way through an intersection with a STOP sign.(I go slow but don?t stop so maybe I am half a moron) Getting T-boned on a Downtown street is NOT fun believe me my poor car knows. (I really loved that car and miss her) Also how can you actually trust that a JC driver will stop at a STOP sign? I rather piss the people off behind me than get T-boned again! Oh yeah another problem is the cars and van?s parked illegally on the corner?s ..too hard to see what?s coming. (in my accident at least the coppers ticketed the illegally parked van)

Happy driving.

Forced to open safe by brutal thugs: pal taken hostage

By Michaelangelo Conte
Journal Staff Writer

A Downtown Jersey City man was bound with duct tape in his home and pistol whipped before being robbed of nearly $15,000 Thursday by gunmen who took the victim?s friend as a hostage, officials said yesterday.

The 28-year-old victim told police when he and his friend arrived at his Morris Street residence at 4:25 p.m. , two armed men pushed in behind them and started hitting him in the head with guns, reports said. The victim said he was told to ?Shut the (blank) up and give up the money?, while being bound with duct tape, reports said.

The robbers got the man?s safe, put it in front of him and demanded the combination while continuing to strike him, reports said. The victim complied and the robbers took $15,000 from the safe, reports said. Adding that they also took a cell phone and computer.

The gunmen left with the hostage , the victim worked himself free, the hostage has been located.

Maybe the full piece will be on the net later, or go and buy today?s print JJ.

Police say Jersey City man flees after gunman pulls trigger, but gun doesn't fire

By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal

February 19, 2010,

A Downtown Jersey City man is lucky to be alive after a man pointed a gun at his chest Tuesday night and pulled the trigger, but it did not fire, officials said.

The 21-year-old Varick Street resident was walking home from a grocery store at 8:17 p.m. and was at Varick and Christopher Columbus Drive when the gunman and another man hiding between parked cars ran toward him, reports said.

The gunman pointed a black handgun with a long barrel at the man's chest, mumbled something unintelligible, and pulled the trigger, reports said. When the victim heard a clicking sound and realized the gun had not fired, he turned and ran, reports said.

The gunman is described as being 18 to 20 years old and wearing blue jeans and a black jacket with an orange lining and fir trim around the hood, reports said. The second man was wearing either a red hat or red shirt, reports said.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Jersey City police tip line at (201) 547-JAIL.

Attorney facing "road rage" incident in Jersey City has resigned from Bayonne Little League coaching job

An attorney with the Hudson County Law Department who is charged with assaulting a woman during an apparent road rage incident and then smashing a car window with a baseball bat has resigned as a Bayonne Little League coach, officials said yesterday.

John Collins, of Tottenham Court in Jersey City, who is also a Jersey City Municipal Court public defender, has been suspended without pay from his county job pending the outcome of the criminal trial, county officials said.

Collins appeared in court Friday on charges he punched a woman in the face and smashed the driver's side window of the car she was in with a baseball bat during an apparent road rage incident on Thursday at 11:49 p.m. at 14th and Washington streets in Jersey City, according to reports.

Re: Opinions on Journal Square - Is it still up and coming?

.
Just some ramblings from an old-timer on this?.

JSQ / Indian Sq are probably the most successful business areas in JC. Those areas are thriving, there are signs of life everywhere. Not like other ?more developed? parts of the city that look like ghost towns during most times of the day. Have you ever driven (or at least tried to drive) up Newark Ave. on a weekend? It is like freaking Times Square. I think they could use a Bloomy pedestrian area. (do you remember my ?Frogger? post) All of the stores in the JSQ are rented out and have been for years. All of the houses are occupied not with one single yuppie/newcomer/pioneer per house but with hard working large families of all nationalities.

I don?t consider the JSQ area ?run down? yes it is old, but those people take pride in their houses and try their best to keep them up. (as would you) There are some really nice looking houses in the area. Also isn?t that what you newcomers like old/original stuff?? Real city living.

Like someone said DTJC was a true gentrification because the small stock of brick houses that were abandoned by their owners were purchased on the cheap by newcomers and developers and turned around. (had a friend who purchased a 4 story brick row house from the city for $3500 in the early 80?s) Other large parcels of vacant factory/railroad property were used to build massive apartment/condo towers. (some ugly in my opinion..sorry) I can?t see JSQ home owners ?selling out? to newcomers/developers they know the value of their cribs in the rental market. Just need to hang onto them rent one floor out live on the other. Prices are around 400K for a two family. Buildings with stores along Indian Square going for a million plus. Heard the store rents are at 6K to 10K+.

JSQ is at full occupancy. The retail is not what the 2,000 or so JC newcomers might hunger for but for the rest of the 234,000 of us it is fine. Coffee is coffee the bean comes from the same place doesn?t matter if it served in a fancy Starbucks cup or a Bodega paper cup.

Like I keep saying yes support your downtown businesses but spend some of that money in other parts of JC. You will be surprised what you find. I see some of you have found Boulevard Drinks. Excellent!

Crime in JSQ is the same as anywhere in JC. The same JC rule applies..if you are brave enough to go out at night watch your back.

There are many close knit communities(/blocks) in JSQ. Everyone watches out for one another. A real nice mix of people. An example is the quiet dead end streets around the square. Real tight! Also on those streets are a few cool looking new/old properties. Yes there is new development sprinkled around JSQ.

The new JSQ ? www.thenewjournalsquare.com

Oh yeah some one mentioned messing around with the Marion Section..bulldozing it?? Back in the day the Marion boys would have kicked your butt for saying something about Marion! They were a nasty crew!

Funniest thing about this thread is that someone from the JC Heights actually had the balls to bad mouth another section of the city (JSQ). Not cool!! Hey the JC Heights summer concert series is almost here. The driving pounding sounds of Latin music coming out of apartment house windows at all hours of the night. Enjoy!

*******

I think both newcomers and old-timers should come together?

I feel like singing? how about a song?.

[Chorus]
We are JC
We are it?s residents
We are the ones who see a brighter JC
So let's start working
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own property values
It's true we'll make a better JC
Just you and me

When you walk around JC
There seems no hope at all
But if you just believe
There's no way we can fall
Well, well, well, well, let us realize
That a change will only come
When we stand together as one

Jersey City police charge public defender - one of about 20 who work for city - with assault on cop and disorderly conduct after incident at tavern

Friday, August 06, 2010
By MICHAELANGELO CONTE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

A public defender in Jersey City Municipal Court - who allegedly boasted he "knew people" - was arrested on charges he assaulted city police officers after brawling outside a Downtown bar yesterday, officials said.

John Collins, 35, of Danforth Avenue, was arrested at 1:05 a.m. outside O'Connell's Bar on Montgomery Street and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct and obstructing a government function, reports said.

Collins told the officers they "had no idea who the (expletive) he was" and said he "knew people," reports said, adding that he told the officer he worked in the court.

While being booked, Collins "continued to be verbally abusive to the arresting officers, making threats about his 'connections' and how he could affect the officers' careers," reports said.

Officers responding to the bar on a report of a fight were speaking to the man Collins had apparently been in a scuffle with when Collins approached waving his hands and yelling at the 45-year-old Pavonia Avenue man, reports said.

Collins, who was "visibly highly intoxicated," pushed one officer in the chest twice and brushed away the arm of another officer who was attempting to keep him back, reports said.

When two officers escorted Collins a short distance away, he began pounding on the glass window of the bar and was telling the officers to "lock him up," which they did, reports said.

A few hours before his arrest, Collins had spoken against a proposed gas pipeline at a Jersey City City Council meeting a few blocks away at City Hall.

Last night, city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill confirmed that Collins is one of about 20 public defenders used by the municipal court.

True about #61?you newcomers know how to put pressure on people so maybe the city is starting to pay attention. When something like this (a bar springing up) comes up they know they can?t sit on it. That?s fresh!

Three ?guess who used to own PJ Ryan?s ? Michael Anthony Ryan former owner of PJ Ryan's Pub and Restaurant, in Jersey City (and someone on this thread mentioned he is opening there again)

Hey I wonder if he needs any stinking permits? I don?t need no stinking permits!!

Side question?how can someone who owns a business in JC be the chairman of the JC planning board? He could be putting the brakes on other businesses that may pop up and take some of his customers. Sounds like a conflict of interest to me. Hey wasn?t the brakes just applied on Barcade????

Silence until court date for domestic violence charges against Healy's son

Saturday, April 02, 2011
By TERRENCE T. McDONALD
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

No additional information regarding Thursday's arrest of the Jersey City mayor's son will be made available to the public because the arrest resulted from a domestic dispute, Hoboken police officials said yesterday.

Jeremiah Healy, 34, a Jersey City firefighter, was arrested in Hoboken early Thursday morning and charged with simple assault and domestic violence. Police have only said that the alleged victim was female and the alleged crime occurred on Washington Street near Third Street.

On Thursday, Hoboken Sgt. Sam Williams said police were waiting to interview Healy, the alleged victim, and a witness before they released more information on the incident.

But yesterday, Police Sgt. Anthony Falco Jr. said that police are prohibited by a state executive order from releasing details about domestic violence incidents.

Hoboken police haven't always refrained from sharing information about domestic disputes. In September, police shared reports about a 49-year-old Hoboken man who allegedly beat his girlfriend with a cat and punched her in the back and head.

Asked why details of that case were shared, Falco said, "I don't have an answer for you."

Healy is scheduled to appear in Hoboken Municipal Court at 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday. He hasn't returned requests for comment, but his father, Mayor Jerramiah Healy, has said the incident involved "no domestic violence of any kind."

Hey that whole naked picture (no pun intended) was all over the media, the NYT had a big piece on it. Old-timer?s step in .. as I recall someone knew Healy was coming home drunk from a bar (or two) . They waited outside for a while until he I guess took a shower.(how they timed it I don?t know) They went in front of his house and banged on his metal trash cans. The noise caused a buzzed Healy to come out of the front door in a bath towel. As he was yelling and waving his hands his towel fell off and they snapped a picture. A few days later the picture was showing up all over. It was placed on cars windshields, etc just in time for election. Politics as usually in good old JC and you thought the Swift Boat tactic was nasty!!!

There is a new piece in the print JJ section today. (hey guess what it did make the front page) It says the same stuff as yesterday but it throws in these two new tidbits. I guess there want to make him look like a good guy. It says something about his 2008 participation in the Cops /Fireman Charity Football Game. And also that his brother Pat is guess what also a JC fireman.

I have nothing against the family or anyone. It just pisses me off how three of his kids have city/county jobs. I have friends back in the day who couldn?t afford to go to college. They were banking on getting on the JC PD or JC FD . They got on the list but the list never got to their number and was always re-done?new list, new testing. Also have friends whose kids just graduated law school?NO JOB!

Jersey City Mayor: 'no domestic violence' involved with son's arrest

Published: Thursday, March 31, 2011, 3:27 PM
By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy denied his son was involved in any kind of domestic violence incident, in a brief statement he released this afternoon.

Healy's son, Jeremiah S. Healy, 34, was arrested in Hoboken early this morning and charged with simple assault and domestic violence.

According to Hoboken Police, the younger Healy was involved in an altercation with a female victim at 1:20 a.m. on Washington Street in Hoboken.

But the "facts" will prove there was no assault, the mayor said today.

"According to the information I have, no one was injured, no one was assaulted, and there was no domestic violence of any kind. This will be borne out by the facts," said Mayor Healy.

"I love my son very much and support him 100 percent," he added.

From Wikipedia but give me a freaking break ?..couldn?t the Mayor have waited a year or two to make it less obvious?

The sudden death of Mayor Glenn Cunningham in May 2004 triggered a special election. Among the eleven candidates, Jerramiah Healy won Cunningham's unexpired term with 17,401 votes (27.8%) out of 62,641 cast.[5] Other than the unusually high number of candidates, the election was notable for the rabidly negative nature of the campaign.[6] The attacks included the distribution of a photo taken of Jerramiah Healy on his porch in Jersey City, passed out and naked.[7]

Healy stood for re-election in May 2005, facing only token opposition from Melissa Holloway, a former city councilperson, and Alfred Marc Pine, who had received less than one percent of the votes in the special election. Healy received 18,349 (75%) of the 24,414 votes cast.[8]

One of Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy?s sons was arrested early this morning in Hoboken in an alleged domestic violence incident, Hoboken police said this afternoon.

Jeremiah S. Healy, 34, of Ferry Street, was charged with simple assault and domestic violence against a female victim after an altercation on Washington Street at 1:20 a.m. today, Hoboken Sgt. Sam Williams said.

A witness to the incident called police, who then responded, Williams said.
Hoboken police declined to give any more information, saying they haven?t interviewed Healy, the victim or the witness yet.

Healy, a Jersey City firefighter since 2005, earns a $95,575 annual salary. When firefighters are arrested, they are required to tell their superiors upon starting their first shift after the arrest, according to Fire Director Armando Roman.

.

I am not against bars (I spent plenty of time in them back in the glory days of JC) but for those interested ?..

Like the OP said look in the JJ for the legal notices about the property. I am one of the fools who actually read those tiny notices in the classified section. I haven?t seen one for that address yet. It will say something like ?MOJO BAR is requesting a license renewal at 130 West Side Ave if you want to protest it send a letter to so and so within two weeks?.

I think there was one in the JJ this week or last. Not for that property but I will post the address etc.

PS ? you guys should read those HC and JC legal notices. The best ones are the back dated ones from HC that say a no bid contract for $500K was awarded to so and so for the period of May , 2009 to Dec 2009 Hmmmmmm!

.(read above post first)

Hey 9900 I found this thread on jclist from 2007, what a horror story. Doesn?t sound like the impound lot has it together.

http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=11508

(If they don?t give you information ..as stupid as this might sound?.get a pair of binoculars pull your car (rental car ) over on the side of the NJTP before the toll plaza above the Phillips Street impound lot and see if you spot your car. I think there is a large fence on the Phillips street side so you can?t see in from there. Your car may be just sitting there)

Again good luck (sorry for the rental car pun)

.
A friend of mine lives down in Society Hill. The SH Association requires every home owner to get their dryer vents cleaned once (or twice?) a year. Great idea! They also get their HVAC vents cleaned at the same time. (not required by assoc.)

They use a place called Advent.

www.adventductcleaning.com

Looks like their do all kinds of vent cleaning, don?t know any prices.

Bergen/Lafayette – Savage Sex Attack!!

Jersey City woman, 34, is dragged into alley, suffers long rape attack, and is beaten and robbed just after midnight, and then assailant rides away on his bicycle

Friday, March 25, 2011
By MICHAELANGELO CONTE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

A 34-year-old Jersey City woman was put in a choke hold, dragged into an alleyway, and savagely sexually assaulted early yesterday, according to authorities who are seeking the public's help to capture the victim's bike-riding attacker.

"The facts depict the actor as a very disturbed individual," Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said yesterday of the physical and sexual assault that occurred just after midnight Wednesday near Harrison and Bergen avenues. "Obviously we have to remove this actor from the streets."

The victim was walking home when she was approached by a man riding a bicycle who demanded money, DeFazio said, adding that she told him she had none.

The man put the victim in a choke hold and forced her into an alley where he partially disrobed her and sexually assaulted her, the prosecutor said.

The assault "went on for some time" and the woman screamed, but her attacker had her in a choke hold and threatened to kill her, DeFazio said, adding the man also beat the victim, causing injuries unrelated to the sexual assault.

The man then robbed the victim and fled on his bicycle, DeFazio said.

The woman called police and was taken to Christ Hospital, where she was treated for her injuries and released, DeFazio said.

The woman described her attacker as a black man, about 30 years old, and standing 5-foot-7, officials said.

The man was wearing black jeans, a forest green hooded jacket with an orange sweatshirt beneath it, and white, black and gray sneakers, DeFazio said. He had large silver and gray headphones around his neck and was wearing a do-rag on his head, DeFazio said, adding that he rode a silver, BMX-style bike.

The man could face up to 40 years in prison if convicted of aggravated sexual assault and robbery.

"We are working diligently to apprehend this dangerous individual," Jersey City Police Chief Tom Comey said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Special Victims Unit at (201) 915-1234 or the police tip line at (201) 547 - JAIL.

12012 ok I think I read that the company already started it?s work maybe back office stuff not the inspections.

I found this on the jersey city independent site ?interesting I thought there were way more properties in JC.

?We did a lot of analysis before we submitted our bid,? he said. ?Out of 51,000 properties, about 14,000 are condos, and many of those ? if not most ? are long-term tax-abated.?

?It?s not that you don?t apprise those, but it doesn?t require the same amount of expense on staffing on our part for inspections,? he explained further. ?It is [our knowledge of the] condos and townhouses in Jersey City that enabled us to hone in on a lower bid process.?
