Re: Bob Hurley and St. Anthony on 60 MINUTES
Home away from home
Home away from home

Coach Hurley is a super nice friendly guy, met him a couple of times on the street. His record for getting kids to college is excellent. However, let it be known, St Anthony is a training ground for college basketball. That is NOT a HS basketball team, that is a Division 2 College basketball team where he recruits kids from ALL OVER the metropolitan area. Most of those kids are NOT from Jersey City. Very rarely will a public school be able to match parochial schools that focus intensively on recruiting. Public schools are more strict with whom they receive as students in their district. I think there should be a national Public School Champion and Parochial Champion, same as state champions in NJ. They are not and never will be on the same playing level. Unfair in my opinion.

With that out of the way, he has done an excellent job coaching team basketball and preaching education and value.

Compared to where the interviewer from 60 minutes lives, I guess you can call Hamilton Park rundown ( : I hate to see what they think of some parts of Greenville?

Re: Victorias Restaurant on 3rd st and newark

The positive: The owners and staff are super friendly, super nice. The pizza maker was attentive and tried to make the pizza exactly how I like it.

The potential: The space needs to be looked at by a professional and designed to be more intimate. Seems they are in between being a pizza joint and a restaurant. It's tough to decipher which direction they want to go.

The negative. Conventional pizza ovens are difficult to perfect a truly tasty pizza, brick is the way to go. Thus, the pizza was average. However, I took it to go and it took me a bit to park and get home, so it was not pipin hot, soooo I will probably just eat there next time. Still think Amelia makes the best pizza, the margherita pizza is excellent, but still not as good as Number 28, Arturo's or John's on 44. Al Santillo's Brick Oven Pizza is probably best pizza closest to Jersey City in NJ.

Music that sounds like elevator funk ting ting...I'm starting to think that P&6 must have hypnotic powers on all of you people. I mean, go to Mercato in NYC and try the Fave E Cicoria and that shit is AMAZING, the Italian Hot Dog at Tommy's in Elizabeth is AMAZING, my sandwich was very good, lot different than some of the adjectives being thrown carelessly here. In fact, a 16 dollar sandwich better feed 2, 3 or 4 small people, heck, that's an after dinner mint for me. But hey, maybe they had a bad music day, just stop playing cheesy bad funk pop sounds.

Went today for lunch, had the Park n 6th and it was a 8 out of 10, lots of brisket, juicy, tons of mozz and the bread was crunchy. BUT, it took 15 minutes to make bc they only made one for the previous order and forgot about mine. They did apologize, but where's the offer for a free soda or something, especially for new business. And the music sucked. And the door kept opening letting the cold air in and it would not close if you did not shut it behind you, which many a rude and inconsiderate people do. And they need one or two more tables. To me, it's too cold to eat inside unless they fix that door.

I went and got the whole chicken and was not impressed, it was decent, nothing special. I will try one more time on one of the regular dishes, but not the whole chicken. I will stick to my Kiki Riki in Union City.

In the famous words of Borat, how much?

I get two with a little side cabbage salad (marinated in beets) for 5 bucks at the Red Hook Soccer Fields, but the trucks / season is over as of October 31, thus I have to wait until April.

How much Sweetie? You can send message if you prefer instead of posting. Thx.

The JCFC is one of the top over 30 mens football (soccer) clubs in New Jersey. They compete in the GSSL A Division. The field is theirs on Wednesday nights from 8 PM to 10 PM via permit, thus no one is allowed to use it during that time. The club competes on Sunday mornings and play their home games in Weehawken Waterfront Park in front of 1000's.

Re: Gov. Christie Fires Schools Chief, Bret Schundler

Home away from home

Now BS (couldn't help it) is disputing CC's reason for firing him, upset he is called a liar...well, BS...you told the Gov one thing, and on tape, you are saying something else (to the panel), and you did NOT get the necessary funding NJ needs to assist children in our school systems (even though probably half will be misused)...that means...YOURE FIRED.

BS: Mr. Gobernor, I did not lie, I did not get the funding because of my handwritten notes and inability to execute in a timely manner..etc..etc..

CC: Wrong, sir! Wrong! Under section 37B of the contract signed by you, it states quite clearly that all offers shall become null and void if - and you can read it for yourself in this photostatic copy: "I, the undersigned, shall forfeit all rights, privileges, and licenses herein and herein contained, et cetera, et cetera... Fax mentis incendium gloria cultum, et cetera, et cetera... Memo bis punitor delicatum!" It's all there, black and white, clear as crystal! You did not get the education funding NJ needed! You bumped into the ceiling which now has to be washed and sterilized, so you get nothing! You lose! Good day, sir! AND YOURE FIRED!!

Re: The Hamilton Inn

I finally tried this joint. 1. My friend and I ate at the bar and the bartender and the staff member sitting next to us was very helpful. We asked for more bread and not only did they give us bread, but when we finished that, they gave us more without asking (dipping into the left over clam sauce). 2. The food was very good. Pastrami sandwich, clams, and pizza with artichoke. 3. They need 3 or 4 more beers on tap, throw a couple of germans in there. 4. The prices for some of the options are fair, some are a bit high, but nothing outrageous. 5. The interior is very nice and gives off a neighborhood feel.

Re: Letter from fire chief: Mr. Fulop, you haven't a clue

Home away from home

Why would I volunteer, I have a job and I do not want to be a fireman. Thus, those who do want to be, this is a great way to start your career. Uh, Mr JCKId or should we call you..Mr. Fire Chief..wink wink....most towns, cities, municipalities are volunteer based...and all I am suggesting is 25 percent. Heck, maybe 15 to 25 percent. But the tax paying citizens are looking to save their money for better use such as improving schools and other various projects while still conserving a JCFD that is reliable, run efficiently and continous to provide for the safety of its citizens..this does not mean they deserve to be overpaid in a system that is politically unstable.

Everyone knows how JC works. Fulop is correct. Friends of Friends and Family members of Family members of this long time machine are doing favors for each other. It's obvious, way obvious how the Chief got the job..maybe he is qualified, but he had the 'inside' track over any other possible candidate.

So, next time we have an election, DON"T re-elect the same guy.

Here is how to reduce the payroll on the JCFD AFTER you show full evidence of the current structure and payroll of the JCFD....by the way, there is a public website that shows salaries.

Scale down the JCFD. 25 percent volunteer. Reduce top level employees ..5 to 8 captains to a fire person. Increase service time required to 30 years before retirement, reduce benefit payout by 25-40 percent. Mandatory 3 percent investment into 403b/457b's to build up retirement savings of fire persons. Not going to be easy, but ya got to start somewhere. You are going to have to give packages to move the unnessary overpaid JCFD to 'early retirement'. Gonna cost something.

Police should be paid more than Firemen. To entice people to work dangerous jobs, they get a decent salary but a BETTER retirement package after serving say 20 or 25 years...thus, you have non employees being paid for numerous years at an early age. The retirement should be 30 years. I guess the public should see a flow chart (w base salary) of the JCPD leadership from top to bottom and see if there is too many chiefs and not enough indians. Lets have both parties (Fulop and the Chief) lay down their ideas in simple terms and evidence.

I do not buy that nobody would work as a police officer / firemen if it was not for the early retirement age/package. Just pay them well, give good benefits and vacation time, raise the number of years for retirement, encourage minimum 403b/457b contributions, and reduce the benefit package 25 percent.

Re: The Hamilton Inn

This is great. Not only first hand hearsay, but the majority of posts on jclist have two major complaints. 1. Bartenders/Wait Staff is not attentive 2. The food is overpriced.

To me, that spells DOOM. Why are people continuing to go to this place.

To the owner: This is not NYC, Brooklyn or even Hoboken. Serve quality dishes at reasonable prices and you'll make a ton of cash. Just snip 2 or 3 bucks off a dish. Also, you MUST have happy hours, specials on wine and beer. This is sound advice, heed or be gone soon. Don't waste the really great interior and atmosphere. Word gets 'round quick in downtown.

Worst Places to Live In NJ. Ready: Camden, Central Ward Newark, Weequahic in Newark, E Port in Elizabeth, Trenton North, Paterson, East Orange, Irvington, anywhere near Communipaw in Jersey City, Passaic, Atlantic City (okay, so they have casinos and some clubs, but try living there), Fourth Street area of Lakewood, Plainfield & Perth Amboy.

Any arguments?
