Ski!

Robin.

If the conditions are good enough, I'll bring my skis up to the hill at Dickinson High School after work tomorrow or on Saturday morning. Anyone else up for some urban downhill?

We don't. The Weather Channel started it as a publicity stunt to get more clicks on their site. Nobody else (National Weather Service, NOAA, etc.) uses these stupid names.

Outside of Manhattan (above 14 St) a "block" is not a standard unit. JSQ to Canco is 0.5 mi (10 min walk according to google maps). Grove to Dixon Mills is 0.4 mi (7 min walk according to google maps). The number of streets crossed along the way doesn't stretch the geography.

That couple was insufferable.

And after looking at Dixon Mills and Trump, they went "45 minutes farther into Jersey City" to look at Canco? 45 min from downtown to JSQ? Walking time, maybe.

4 billion. 1 WTC cost $4 billion (so far). It's the most expensive building ever constructed on earth, though another building may soon pass it--the WTC PATH station. Banksy's right, but we're not allowed to criticize because it's WTC.

Re: Jury duty questions

Yes, the instructions on where to go will be on the recording tonight. Assuming it's petit jury, you'll be instructed to go to 595 Newark Ave (the ugly building next to the old courthouse), stand on the long line for the metal detector, and go to the 4th floor to check in. Bring the hard copy of your notice. They'll scan the barcode on it to check you in.

I don't think there are any bike racks by the courthouse, but there are some signs you can chain up to. I just walk to the courthouse, it's less than a mile (15-20 min) from the Harsimus Cove area.

Seems like the Coles Streer Bike Bandit is still at large. There's another recent thread about bike theft that identified Coles Street as a hot spot.

If you have a U lock or a chain lock, wrap it around the frame AND the rear wheel, so if a perp releases your rear wheel, it's still locked to the rack/rail/signpost. Also you can get anti theft bike bolts that come with a special "key" needed to tighten and loosen them. A perp with an Allen wrench will have no luck.

"Those" storefronts on Newark Ave are there because they have customers who shop there during the daytime, enough customers, in fact, that they can cover the rent every month and pay their employees!

Some of you guys must think everyone who lives Downtown has a white collar job in Manhattan.

http://www.target.com/p/schwinn-men-s ... bike-blue-28/-/A-13241180

I had fitted it with a child seat for my daughter (we never did get to ride it - the bike was two weeks old). The seat was on the rear and looked like this:

And a basket on the front:

I realize its a long shot - and I'm super late posting - but if anyone happens to see my bike I'd appreciate the heads up.

Thanks all

Coles Street does seem to be a pattern here. Three bikes were stolen from my bldg at 4th and Coles earlier this month. Today I saw a flier on 5th at Coles requesting the return of three different stolen bikes in exchange for dropping criminal charges. If you live on or near Coles, hide your kids, hide your bikes.

These cameras might help the problems with stop signs too. The other day I was sitting at BASIC (8th and Erie), watching cars move through the intersection.

Of the first 20 cars, care to guess how many came to a complete stop?

Five. That includes two that didn't stop until they were halfway into the intersection.

15 just rolled right through the intersection with no intention of stopping. smh

Yvonne, not every street needs to have a dedicated bike lane. On some of the narrower streets, a simple "sharrow" can encourage motorized traffic to tend toward the left side of the lane and convey the idea that the limited street space is to be shared.

I have seen 2 people get hit coming at of storefronts on Newark Avenue by bikes now!

I saw a kid riding a bike 15 mph on the sidewalk on Newark Ave try to screech to a halt before hitting a pedestrian right in front of the Downtown News Stand earlier today. Fortunately he was able to slow down enough that he didn't hit the pedestrian very hard and nobody was hurt. I'm not bringing this up to play blame-the-cyclist, but to point out that the "bikes should ride on the sidewalks" line doesn't make sense. Bikes moving at 15-25 mph don't mix with sidewalks full of pedestrians, children, dog poo, etc.

I've been riding my bike in Jersey City for 8 years. The problem isn't narrow streets (most traffic lanes in JC are 10-12 feet wide, and most cars are 6 feet wide). There's enough room to share the road on most streets in the city. And where there isn't, that's cause for patience and passing the cyclist at the first safe opportunity, not for running the cyclist over. The biggest problems are:

(1) too many aggressive drivers who try to "challenge," intimidate, or play chicken with cyclists;
(1-B) too many drivers who think bikes don't belong on the streets (do they have drivers ed anymore?), so they try to "send a message" by cutting cyclists off or making some other aggressive move;
(2) too many drivers who simply don't pay attention to what they're doing while operating a car; and
(3) too many cyclists who don't follow the rules of the road, running red lights, blowing through stop signs, going the wrong way on one-way streets, weaving from street to sidewalk and back again, being unpredictable and unsafe. Cyclists can't expect drivers to obey the rules and share the road if cyclists won't do the same.

I've been cycling in many parts of the country, and Hudson County, NJ is the most frightening place I've encountered, and it's entirely because of driver attitudes. I've never experienced the "I'm going to lay on my horn and then swerve to pin you against the parked cars" types of road rage encounters I've had with automobile drivers in JC, Hoboken, Union City, etc. anywhere else. It's one thing to not like cyclists, or to hold a belief that they don't belong on the streets, but Hudson County is the only place (I've been) where it seems some people will take actions to try to harm or kill you.

Oy. Sounds like it could be a nightmare just thinking of all of the things in this old building they could nitpick. I am the tenant in one of the units, not an owner. I just don't want anything that's under my control in the unit to cause my landlord problems.

NJ DCA Inspection
Home away from home
Home away from home

Received a notice on the door that the NJ Dept of Community Affairs will be doing a multi-tenant building inspection and needs access to all units in the building.

Just wondering what they typically look for, so we can avoid getting any violations. I scanned through the 104 pages of legalese (link below) on the DCA website, which includes mentions of dust samples, cleanliness, and other odd things. But what do they really check out? Smoke detectors? CO detectors? Will I get a violation for having a plant on the fire escape? Is it a quick in and out, or are they going to spend 30 minutes checking every inch of my apartment (and critiquing the decor)? Any experience/advice from others is appreciated. Thanks!
