Re: Gaughan's Legacy!
Home away from home
Home away from home

im pretty sure there were gangs 15 years ago, and crime, which was my point. and the fact that there are a ton of 99 cents stores is gaughan's fault how? jsq probably used to have alot of nice stores as well (or so im told), and now youve got the cheapo stores. it's not a coincidence that the stores moved around the time newport opened - why arent you blaming gaughan for newport then?

crime has been an issue around here for awhile, but some hot areas (like franklin and palisade) have been toned down thanks to efforts by many. your posts make it sound as if the heights is a land of lawlessness, which any non muppet / troll can see is absurd.

yes the heights may not be the same as it was in the 30's (or whenever you guys were growing up), but to say it's deteriorated to the point of no return in the past 15 years is not accurate in my opinion

am i missing something? the central ave (and adjacent streets, like palisade) have gotten 100% better since the time i was growing up (so roughly 15 years, which is the same timeframe as the OP was referring to). was this a serious post, or another tongue-in-cheek typical jclist post?

i went to a club in the city and ordered 4 beers and paid with a credit card. they added 20% to my bill automatically and said it was because it was a credit card or something. it was too loud and too crowded to argue (or even hear what the bartender was saying), but that was just really annoying

jeez.. you know how some people really have it coming to them? well this guy definitely DID NOT have it coming to him at all

http://www.nj.com/news/jjournal/jerse ... 23433715756070.xml&coll=3

"A 41-year-old bank employee survived a suicide attempt yesterday after stabbing himself multiple times and then jumping from his sixth-floor balcony at the Metropolis Towers on Marin Boulevard in Downtown Jersey City, police reports said. "

unfortunate that the economy (most likely, although who knows what other problems he might have been facing) would drive someone to this. if he does recover, i hope that he doesnt try it again in the future

Its because of us artists that the rest of you even want to live here. I don't know where you are coming from, but the arts DO pay, and we do pay our rents, we just keep it real.

they do the same thing to poor or minorities elsewhere and i dont see where the big outrage is over that. maybe we should give some of the montgomery gardens residents cheap condos at the beacon. you know, since they were there first.

oh wait never mind, it's not the same since a few gangbangers live in the projects. therefore, everyone who lives there must be bad and it's ok if they all get displaced. just dont displace the artists

the area you're referring to is pretty good, but certain streets are worse than others. for example, while palisade near congress st is pretty good, the farther down you get it becomes shadier. the best advice was given already - go t here at night and see for yourself.

im also looking at buying a condo (either in that area or elsewhere). a couple that ive seen near the park were way overpriced and small.

i wonder if it's a good thing that these cops are getting featured so much. yeah, you get the positive publicity and pats on the back from your friends and relatives, but i imagine that those cops who arent in the limelight would start getting jealous at some point.. not to mention other would-be criminals or associates of those arrested might start eying retaliation on these guys

Sure - what hurts the overall economy of Manhattan hurts Jersey City.

the implication was that even though the top 5 paid employees probably dont live in jc, thousands of their 'underlings' probably do. if the head honchos get their pay reduced from $10 M to $500K, you can assume that the 'underlings' would likewise get their pay reduced, or at the very least frozen (so those counting on a bonus or a raise to help pay down their mortgage or whatever would be out of luck)

Re: JC - Some positive things...

1 Restaurants / Bars: Rita and Joe's (broadway and 1/9) - Excellent food and nice atmosphere. The back room is also available for parties, etc.

Charritos (heights on Central near Charles) - Much better and somewhat cheaper than the one in Hoboken. More seating area, authentic Mexican decor, and very good fod. BYOB which is a nice touch. People on here swear by Taqueria but honestly, I'd much rather go to Charritos. To each his own

2 Services: The Jitneys - people give them a bad name, but they run really frequently and get you from point A to point B with few issues

2a Services NOT to take - any yellow cab. A five minute ride once put me back like $12... never again.

Bloomberg just had a SHAMEFUL news conference.

I really try not to be a NJ homer, but it totally bugs me that Bloomberg did not mention any NJ first responders, who rescued a good percentage of people on that plane.

I happened to be at Mitsuwa at 3:30 pm today when the plane hit the water, buying my scallop sashimi (lol), and I saw the plane's tail in the river at the Chart House a half hour later.

I left the River Drive minutes before it was closed by NJ first responders who took care of the victims.

Come on, be classy, Bloomberg, and mention NJ first responders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it may not be new but it's still clever.

also, i've seen cars drive around with 'confusing' license plates (like II11III1, etc). while that probably wont fool a camera at a toll booth, it might fool a human looking at the plates

the problem is alot of metro areas like NYC/JC aren't really suffering to the same extent alot of other areas around the country are. is the sky falling? probably not to the extent that the media would want you to believe. but is there a noticeable problem at the macroeconomic level? yes

when i was in HS, they had the option to go on a week long trip to camden to do various acts of community service (help rebuild houses, day care, soup kitchen, food pantry) throughout the week. i went with about 10 other kids from my school, and it was a really memorable experience. im not sure if you could find something similar, but maybe during winter break your son can go for a week away and do something similar

haven't heard anything.. any idea where in the heights? ive been looking for a good place to go to near my house. i live right near new moon but i don't think they're trying to make it into a night spot as much as just a standard bar. if this other place is different then it'd be great

saw them re-brand this place over the past few months (iirc, it used to be a dive place). i saw they had daily specials, including 'college night' on thursdays. i figured it'd be a pretty good hangout, so i decided to stop by on a friday night a couple of months ago. went around 11, place was pretty empty. a couple of people inside, aged anywhere from 22 to 50. pretty random bunch, and not much of a scene. the bar itself was nice though, and pretty big. i ordered a beer ($3 coors bottle i think), and left. i think they have a DJ on saturdays so i'd try it at least once more before i write it off. the best part about this bar is that it's 1.5 blocks from my house

not to defend him, but has anyone posting here gotten really really drunk? like to the point where you black out and dont remember anything at all? some people can drink an entire night and not black out. others can chug a few beers and not remember anything at all. some can funnel beers and act like a clown with friends... others get belligerently drunk and angry. alcohol affects different people different ways. again, not saying he is excused (especially if he is an admitted alcoholic, he shouldnt be drinking excessively or at all to begin with), but i've seen alcohol do some pretty weird stuff to people.
