Re: Help Liberty Humane Win a Make Over!
Home away from home
Home away from home

While I don't usually write about Liberty Humane Society on here, I must add my thoughts and concerns on the contest.

I have visited the shelter ahead of us. They do good work, plain and simple. I can't badmouth the other shelters in first and second place in that area. In fact, I've friended many people from St. Tammany through Zootoo and they are all very good people, true animal lovers.

We need the makeover badly. Our animals need it. We don't have the space or an abundance of supplies to take care of the amount of animals that come in. We make the best of what we have. We are in dire need of renovations throughout the shelter, things nobody would even think of. We need little things like newspapers, towels, toys, blankets, food, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, cat litter, and paper supplies on a daily basis.

Our barrier wall came crumbling down two weeks ago. That wall helped secure our backyard area, keeping the animals within our grounds. While we had some renovations done, there is still much to improve on. We have one bathroom in our facility, in our employee kitchen. While our volunteers help us with some of the tasks that the employees are often too tied up to do (laundry, constantly walking dogs, training) there are some things we can't always rely on volunteers and donations for.

Our animals require vet care. All animals are spayed/neutered before being adopted out. Our adoption fees are very humble, perhaps too humble for the economy at this time. We're over crowded with unwanted pit bulls and cats that continue to come in on a daily basis. We take in animals from Animal Control and the general population. We don't get to pick and choose what animals come through our doors. We simply make room, set up a crate or cage, and hope for the best.

A makeover might not be the answer to the intake population by any means, but it would provide us with a modern facility that will make our day to day routines easier to handle with ample space for more intake and better care. It would provide us with a proper and sanitary space for medical treatment for sick and injured animals.

My first visit to LHS was a good experience. Working there was life changing. The people that work at LHS are a different breed. Day by day, sometimes night by night, employees spend their own time with these animals, giving them the attention they deserve.

Sure, I can hope and dream that this makeover can become a reality. We have enough people in Jersey City and Hudson County who can help MAKE this a reality.

My personal opinion is that if you have time for facebook and myspace, you can spend a few minutes a day on Zootoo and show off your pets to people who will actually be interested in hearing about them. I've met many great people that volunteer with us mainly because I've read their journals and viewed their photos and comments on zootoo.

It's been a great and rewarding experience. I hope that with the remaining time in this contest that others will help out and make this dream a reality.

i had my cat put to sleep and a private cremation for him back in 2004. it cost me over 600 bux at garden state animal hospital (north bergen)

i'd recommend going through LHS if you really can't afford a private cremation.

i remember the old sea kaws tags on a building near newport that was demolished in 1997 or so... i was always intrigued by the tags near the roof of the building for some reason. i guess this all explains it.

I used to do this for the Sheriff Dept also. It's quite easy unless the person jumps from job to job. The only time it's a major issue and more of a heacache is when it's a private firm handling the actual garnishment, then things can get ugly. When it's county/statewide, there is a higher success rate of getting the money.

Cool! I worked in the JC store, maintained the website, and did some minor service work. I rode for his BMX team in Secaucus as well and worked the GT Air show and booked all the bands. I miss those guys, they were good people.

I used to service those bikes at SDS bike stores. They were Raleigh F-500's which were discontinued to use to the public and were only issued as Police Bikes in the late 90's. I wonder where they all went.

good breeders will work on a specific temperament aside from just perfecting the look of the dog.

It's part of our job. We have to use our best judgement when handing a particular animal. I find cat scratches to be a more frequent nuissance but anything is possible.

I would propose dog owners must get licensing, similar to a obtaining a car license. It would involve (1) basic dog owning knowledge test, (2) evidence of insurance so that, if your dog bites someone, the victim can sue the shit out you and (3) maybe some other requirements that would be useful. People keep saying dogs have to be licensed now and I know that, but as these dog lovers love to say, it is not the dogs its the owners. So owners should need a license, as well as the dogs. Also large fees should be charged for these licenses so that more money can be put into doggy law enforcement.

As for urban areas, dog owning should be much more restrictive. In the suburbs or rural areas you can make a better argument for dog freedom, but not in a city. I would require a mandatory license to evidence that every single dog you own in a city has gone through some form of obedience training. A dog seen off a leash should be immediately confiscated and sent to live with a family on a farm. I would also only allow dogs in certain areas of the city, not on every street of the city. Some areas would be off limits to dogs.

Thats what I can say Just off the top of my head...

Re: 1 - If animals were adopted from shelters more often and less from backyard breeders, there would be much less of this problem. There are people who post on craigslist looking for puppies and dogs who don't want to pay adoption fees because they simply can't afford to own a dog but want one anyway. This is the reason why the shelters are overcrowded. Shelters screen applicants and check with landlords.

As for humans having to take a test, well that's very unlikely but there is a test for good and trained dogs - AKC's Canine Good Citizen Certification - http://www.akc.org/events/cgc/index.cfm

Re: 2 - http://www.dogbitelaw.com/PAGES/insurance.htm

Re 3 - A license to own a dog? come on! Vet bills, food, medication, and everything else that is an actual part of being a RESPONSIBLE dog owner costs enough already. Dogs in only certain areas of the city is also a little unreasonable.

I don't take my dog to dog parks. Why? Because he's a Pit Bull. He's not dog aggressive, but people are afraid of Pit Bulls. Also, another dog may rub him the wrong way or provoke him, and he's a big boy. I try to think about what other people are thinking at the given moment. I understand, so I walk my dog by my side on a very short lead when I pass by people who are clearly uncomfortable. Most of these folks just cross the street anyway. Others, greet my dog and get kisses from him. Dogs are not for everyone, but for those of us who own dogs and are responsible about it, we shouldn't have to always face the consequences of these waste of life people who make my job harder to do. Yes, they are wastes of life if they allow their "baby" to come to the shelter because they took on a responsibility they can't handle.

-Responsible dog owners: Pick up after thir dog even when no one is looking or it is not in front of someones house or property (schools, parks, the Embankment, churches ext)
-Responsible dog owners: Take their dogs for one 45-60 minute walk a day or two 30 minute walks a day to exercise their dog (in addition to 2-3 short pee/poop breaks a day) A tired dog is a better behaved dog and will be much more obedient and trainable. Puttin a dog in a yard is NOT exceptable, they must be walked! Birds fly, fish swim and dogs WALK!!

Thanks ,

great post. my dog is usually exhausted after a half hour to 45 minute walk, though we are usually out longer if it's not too cold out for him. the more i walk him, the more excited he is to go out on a daily basis, and the more relaxed he is around the apartment.

people seem to do this fairly often at night around here so they are less likely to get caught or face criticism. I've seen it done with both big and small dogs. Not cool.

Though my dog is often about as harmful as a marshmallow peep, i keep him leashed no matter what. I have never had the urge to unleash him, nor do I approve of others who walk their dogs unleashed at night. I find that highly irresponsible of them, and you never know what may stimulate a dogs mind.

Places:

Exchange Place - on a clear night in the summer. I couldn't ask for a more relaxing place to hang out and drink coffee.

Liberty State Park - All the time. This park is awesome to walk your dog, ride a bike, rollerblade, or jog through. In the morning the view of the sun rising over the river is captivating.

Lincoln Park West - To watch some of our local schools play baseball and softball in the Spring. I used to play softball in high school and College. Sometimes I go see my old high school team play. There's a lot of talent in this city.

Pershing Field Ice Rink - I grew up skating at Pershing Field. I skated daily up until I was about 14. I still go from time to time and for what they charge for admission, it's highly worth it.

Food:

Gino's Pizza/Stadium Pizza - Two of my favorite stops to have a slice or two, dining in.

Blimpie - I like the one on Central Ave. the best, but the one on Newark Ave. delivers to my apartment. I'm not a fan of the one on Grand or on Bergen.

Our Hero - Another McGinley Square staple. Usually full of St. Doms and Hudson Catholic kids, but their sandwiches are still as good as they were back in high school.

White Castle - Good for the late night craves, if you want to wait 45 minutes in the drive thru on a busy night.

Ashiya on 440 - Half Priced Sushi. It's a great stop for me when I'm at NJCU and need to grab a quick lunch or dinner.

Stores:

Canis Minor - A staple for pet owners. They carry premium foods, cute dog clothing, a good selection of training supplies, and all of those things you don't "need" until you see them.

A&P on 18th St - A little pricey, but they have an olive bar! Their store is very clean and well organized, unlike Shop Rite at Metro Plaza.

Kennedy Stores - On Central Ave, this "junk" store has every little thing you can imagine. I usually get my thermals there in the winter time and cheap odds and ends I may need around the house.

I met Grant at LHS when he was "Eli" and was interested in either him or Sharky. The next time I came back, he was gone into rescue, so I took Sharky. I re-met Grant at Bark in the Park and he looked like a happy go lucky dog. Kudos to you guys for taking charge of a bad situation.

I used to volunteer there when I was a teenager. It was a lot of fun! They do all sorts of educational activities, sing, dance, draw, make arts and crafts, and even have a nice nap time.

I also volunteered during their after school program for the parents who got out of work late. We would do more arts and crafts or watch fun kid videos while waiting for the parents to show up.

Though the building itself isn't really the greatest, the staff are pretty nice and down to earth people. I think they still get a lot of volunteer help from St. Dominic Academy during the school year, so a lot of the younger ladies that you may see there are actually high school girls doing a service class (Which is how I got started.)

I caught 2 guys breaking into my old carolla in 2002. I immediately ran outside with a camera and my cell phone to dial JCPD. Since they busted out my door locks, I had to break into my own car to get in and chase them a few blocks until they got away. JCPD were VERY quick to respond and caught a few guys around the corner doing the same thing. They may have not caught my guys, but they caught others in the act, perhaps part of the same group.

I've seen people come down by Simple when I worked there to creep into cars but never caught one actually breaking in. I have a few license plate numbers written down. They seem to park in the vicinity and then walk around. My guess is that most of them probably don't live in the area they are preying on or even in Jersey City for that matter.

Re: My car was broken into on Summit Ave between Journal and McGinley Squares

I'm between Academy and Vroom, so right next to the courthouse off of Newkirk. I have FOP plate holders on the car (Used to belong to my dad who is retired JCPD) so that could've been another deciding factor on why to choose my car. Either way, surveillance with internet streaming will be installed on the front of my apartment very soon. My folks did our house up in the heights after all 3 of our cars were ransacked between 2001 and 2003. At one point I had changed cars and no more than a week later the newest one was hit up to the point I had different keys for every part of the car. Since the cameras were installed, people literally crossed the street just to not be seen by them and our neighbors always ask us if we caught something being done to their car when they wake up and find a smashed window or a sideswiped door. It's a real shame. I worked so hard to have this car and I work extremely hard to pay for my new apartment which is beautiful. Other than this I've had no problems and at least get a smile and a wave from most of my neighbors, even some of the thug looking kids who recognize me from walking the dog. My guess is it's someone from another neighborhood, just like I witnessed down at Hamilton Park this summer with a guy randomly parking and peeking in various car windows.
