Re: Trees along Christopher Columbus drive

A bad idea gets worse....

So in observing the everyday progress of the CCD work, I've noticed that at the SW corner of CCD and Varick, the street is not getting widened where the existing curb bump-out is because this is where Dixon has that driveway that goes to their garage. The new curbs are being formed around it, preserving the bump-out.

Now if the aim was to add traffic to the right hand lane next to the sidewalk, that lane is going to abruptly end where the bump-out is which in turn will have created a brand-spanking-new bottleneck where cars will have to merge.

Sheer genius.

Kenny replaced Mary Spinello on the City Council in early 2009 when Spinello stepped down to take the helm at the Jersey City Parking Authority. He was elected last May to the same post, but resigned after he was charged in July.

They forgot to mention that he was hand-picked to replace Spinello by Healy.

I think this is an idea that should be taken seriously.

The points made by Joe Saward in his blogpost - this is the correct link: http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/05/04/thoughts-on-jersey-city/ - are really quite salient as far as they are true.

There is so much wrong with what he says, it would take too long to write it all....

In short, the area of the park was, as he points out, "an industrial wasteland". Fine. However it is not that now. So why does that make it more valid to have a race here than someplace that never was?

Other quotes I take exception with:

Quote:
The Liberty States Park is a child of the post-industrial era.

"Liberty States Park"?! Please, before you propose taking away my parkland, at least get the name right.

It is a new park in which urban dwellers from New York can enjoy some space and a great view.

New York? How about urban dwellers from Jersey? And yes, some of us like the "space and a great view" and would like to keep it as such.

Exactly. Today, I'm coming down Ravine Road from the heights. (Ravine is one of the "mountain" roads that allows a shortcut from the heights down to Hoboken.)

Anyway, Ravine is a two-way road that ends at a lightrail crossing at the bottom. I'm nearing the crossing, which has a red light because a train is coming, when an a-hole in a white SUV comes barreling up from behind me on the wrong side of the road, passes me and the two cars in front of me, slows down for a second and then speeds through the lightrail crossing which is still a red signal for us.

Train comes through moments later.

The light rail is NOT a problem. The arrogance and sense of entitlement of some of the people who live here, however, is.

At least our council members all have free cars with which they can drive around "documenting" the litter problem.

Except for Vega who we know is busy driving to fires and counting the homeless....

And as for Viola's remark about "I pay that tax increase too...",

I'll just say that I'd gladly trade my current car payment, insurance and gas money for the tax increase.

And how about Vega's response when asked if he's on call 24/7: "Yes, sometimes I have to go to fires..."

Re: City To Conduct First Property Revaluation Since 1988
Home away from home
Home away from home

Follow me here and tell me if this makes sense.....

I'm one of those with one of those rowhouses downtown near HP that was bought back in 1995. Price was 175K and building was reassessed to that same amount (through tax appeal) at that time.

Over the years, the assessment has risen to 198,000, (most recently last year) which is what it currently is and I am paying almost 14K in taxes.

If the current average assessed value is 26.75% of market value, that would work out to a market value for me of $740,187. And if the current market is 30% of what it was before the recession, that would have made a pre-recession value of about 960K, right in that "1 million dollar neighborhood" category that always get thrown around.

So am I right in concluding that I am not horrendously under assessed and that the hit might not be as bad as expected?

The new sidewalk along Dixon from Monmouth to Varick is being poured around the trees, the majority of which have been saved.

Nothing has changed in 130 years.

Substitute today's tax-abated properties with the railroads.

The part about the city government of 1880 sounds painfully familiar.

I think the city will be cautious in raising taxes for some simple reasons. If property taxes suddenly spiked then many homeowners would be unable to pay and there would be another spike in foreclosures, if demand tanked because taxes spiked then the city would have to rasie taxes on remaining property owners even more.... and then the Democrats would definitely get voted out of office. Of course, there would still be a contingent of renters who are immune. I don't think landlords can pass higher property taxes along to rent stabilized tenants or can they?

Based on the history of this administration, do you really think they can think that far ahead and to that level of detail?

Multi-unit rowhouses are assessed higher the more units there are?

For example: for a given rowhouse, all other things being equal, would a 3 family will be assessed higher than a 2 family?

This is assuming they are rental units, not a condo building.

I noticed too that the work seems to be happening around the trees and that they look like they are not being removed except where the sidewalk bumps out at the corners. This is adjacent to Dixon on the south side between Brunswick and Varick. Trees, when they are going to be removed are usually the first thing to get done, but the crew really seems to be working around them. So hopefully, they're staying along that stretch.

This is total crap.....

JUST PAVE THE FRIGGIN' ROAD!!!!

It's been 20 years since it's seen a paving crew. It does NOT need to be widened. LEAVE THE TREES! LEAVE THE PARKING!!!

And construct a raised median with trees like upper Broadway or Park. Ave in NYC. It can work; the PATH tracks are a full level below the street. There is no reason this scar through downtown needs to be made so much worse instead of better.

Seems like JC can't manage to do anything without leveling the place first and then the end result is a piss-poor, half-assed job (see Newark Ave. and Grove Street PATH Park).

Yes, this was all the work of Goldman-Sachs. This, along with their "winter garden" that never happened.

Get ready: our own version of the Gowanus Expressway is coming. Robert Moses would love it!

Is this always at the same time?

Sometimes the sweeper "gets into position" before the scheduled start of it's run and is either waiting for the designated time to start or is waiting for the JCPA ticket scooter to show up and "lead the way".

Or the slob could just be on the phone or taking a nap at our expense.....
