Re: Embankment- Update Thread

Home away from home

Hi...

What happened to the thread about the falling stones that caused the JCFD to tape off a whole section of the corner of 6th and Erie. It was front page on the Jersey Journal on Tuesday.

Seems that that conveniently disappeared. What about TRUTH do these folks who want to keep the embankment don't realize. And why were the posts removed? Webmaster? Please explain?

The embankment needs to come down before someone is injured by falling stones.

FACT.

Thanks

FG

I hope the dog run areas have those air lock areas to put leashes on like the ones at Van Vorst Park.

The way the plan look now is just a single gate which may mean escaping dogs when one person wants to leave.

Please include the air lock feature.

Also.... OMG the size of the new playground area is huge. Maybe too big???

One thing that will be nice to see will be the removal of concrete walls and stuff.

Too bad they couldn't renovate the park one quadrant at a time.

But I'll take it. At least this is finally happening. How long was this on the drawing board? I remember like voting on proposals at the Gazebo like 3 or 4 summers ago.

Crazy lag time.

See.... things have fallen off before from the embankment and will continue to do so.

It's only a matter of time before someone gets hurt. And then of course they'll sue the city.... and our taxes will go up again.

Time for it to be taken down.

Unfortunately there is this thing called gravity... and well.... what goes up.... eventually falls and crumbles down.

And roots from trees would indeed push out the stones. Trees grow and their roots underground grow. When confined the roots would push outwards.... thus pushing up against the stone.

Nothing lasts forever... nature will take down the embankment eventually. Let's hope no one gets hurt the next time something falls off from there.

Hi Vigilante...

Thanks for agreeing with me for points 1-7.

With regards to the L-word.... just say it... Liberal.

Actually, I am a Blue Dog Democrat. Liberally social, fiscally conservative.

If you want it you have to figure out how to pay for it and frankly, I am being taxed to death while our jobs are being sent overseas.

(sorry for the rant).

Did you read any of the posted comments that were posted? It's totally NIMBY.

OH MY GOD... not in my back yard. Damn my life might be inconvenienced... heaven forbid. I might loose my parking... I might have new neighbors in the back who might see me... loosing my privacy. Get a grip.

I would love to know how many of these folks are real tax paying PROPERTY OWNERS... or just transient RENTERS.

I'm an tax paying owner in Harsimus Cove and I say the Embankment has to go.

Renter's can easily move.

And if they do take it down, I am sure they will use duct tape and the left over plastic sheeting (go to ready.gov) to cover all windows of those on 5th and 6th street dwellings who are freaking out over any sort of change.

Anyways. Just a different point of view for consideration.

FG

P.S. please read the other points after the L-word.

Just posted my comments on-line with the Surface Transportation Board after I was handed a flyer this weekend. Here is what I posted and I thought I would share.

Hello.
I am a resident of downtown Jersey City, NJ in the Harsimus Cove neighborhood.

I believe that the abandoned Harsimus Cove Embankment should be demolished.

There are many reasons why this demolition should take place.
1) The embankment is no longer in use by any sort of railroad.
2) The sections of the embankment that are left have absolutely no historical value
3) Most certainly the embankment contains harmful toxic byproducts from its years of use as a railroad tressel
4) The embankment is a major safety issue in that it suffers from decay and portions of either stone or masonry have fallen off the tops of the structures.
5) The embankment is a blight on the downtown community, encouraging urban vandalism and graffiti
6) At night, the embankment is poorly lit, or not lit at all, and creates an UNSAFE environment for criminals to mug and rob citizens.
7) Pro embankment liberals have concocted an unfeasable plan to establish an elevated "park" without any financial plans for real viability. Meanwhile existing real parks such as Hamilton park just TWO blocks away desperately need major restoration.
8) Pro embankment persons are against change for the common good and have ulterior motives (like not loosing parking space access behind the embankment)
9) Even if a park could be funded and built, it would require significant investment and would increase already extremely high local property taxes
10) The embankment proposal has huge insurance implications. Unlike a traditional ground park, this is an elevated train tressel and because of the height, the insurance costs to the city would be enormously expensive. Also, very expensive safety measures would have to be incorporated to prevent someone from falling off.
11) The ground area abutting the embankment frequently becomes a dumping area for trash, rubbish, discarded shopping carts, etc.
12) certain portions of the embankment are listed on the internet as cruising grounds for inappropriate activity ranging from drug dealing to sexual misconduct - again presenting a danger to the community.

I believe that the embankment should be demolished and hope you agree. In its place, I believe affordable (middle-class) housing should be built. This housing, built to the style of the surrounding brownstone neighborhood, would do so much more for the community and help stabilize declining property values. A derelict eyesore does nothing to help home values and its time has come. The embankment needs to go.

Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thanks

-----
Unfortunately not everyone is FOR this. How about we fix Hamilton park and get a real dog run in there first. Similar to what was done in Van Vorst park.

Feel free to flame away, but this is my point of view and I bet there are many who share it.

New Trees Downtown
Home away from home
Home away from home

Hi. Just wanted to comment that I have seen that new trees were planted just today along 2nd street on both sides of Jersey Avenue.

Have also seen the cut outs for new trees along Jersey ave down to Hamilton Park.

First off.. Thanks to the city for planting the new trees.

Second, are there plans to water the trees? Sometimes new trees take some time to get their roots established.

I would love to see these new trees to take hold. Should I plan on geting a big watering can and water the trees myself or will the city contract to have the trees watered on a regular basis.

Again, thank you to the powers that be for the new trees. Nice to see the tax dollars at work.

Hi All,

To Alek8 - glad you liked my post. I speak the truth. Speaking for the silent majority.

To JBat. I lived at 238 6th St on the 3rd floor for 7 years so I had a clear view of the wasteland that is there. Maybe we have had the same place?

To Do It. I've seen the top of the embankment. Even when the bridges were still connecting the whole thing. It's no park, its no green space. At ground level, still very much an eyesore.

In fact... as this is a former rail site, the whole ground is most likely VERY very contaminated. Would you want your young son or daughter playing in toxic soil? And trying to make it into any sort of park would be VERY very expensive.

Frankly, we have Van Vorst park, we have Hamilton Park... and I'd rather see my tax paying money going to finally renovate Hamilton Park. I mean renovations have been on the table for years... but have gone nowhere.

Who needs another park when a big one needs major renovations.

And what else is funny is... these embankment people tried planting trees between Erie and Jersey several years ago... and they ALL died.

Between Erie and Manila... you still have cha cha land... despite the low income being turned into "Luxury" condos.

Please.

And the insurance costs to the city would be crazy to make an elevated park where someone could fall off.

I'd rather see the money put into new cops to stop crime in JC which is on the rise.

Anyways... Thank God we live in a free country where one can speak his/her opinions. And these are only MY opinions.

Best regards all...

Fletch

Tear down the embankment
Home away from home
Home away from home

Hi all. Just sort of had to chime in on this matter.

From 1993 to 2000 I lived on 6th street between Erie and Jersey. Seven years.

Was on the third floor, so got a good look at the abandoned eyesore... weeds, dead tress, graffiti and everything.

And today, the embankment is still an eyesore. Have you walked around it lately. Graffiti tags are everywhere. Non-historically correct advertising billboards all around. Broken lights along the walkways to "keep us safe".

Now, in 2009 as in 2008 I am a property tax paying JC citizen.

This wall needs to come down. The communities of Harsimus Cove and Hamilton Park need to come together. Tear down this wall Mr. Gorbachev... err. Mr. Healy. Tear it down.

The one thing that is driving property values down is the monstrosity of a graffiti eyesore that we have between us.

Want to know something else? Go to Cruising.dot.com and the embankment is even listed as a place for promiscuous gay sex. Believe it or not. And I am gay BTW.

So there you have it. Tear it down... remake the neighborhood. Progress is good.

Don't believe these leftest NIMBY crazy's. Putting up middle class brownstown housing will help all of our property values. A lot.

Oh did I mention the safety issue? The embankment is not safe. Period. What if a child were to fall from this new fangled park. Law suit. And those stones are not looking secure.

Just some thoughts for consideration.

Thanks

FG

Well, I can say the following:

CH Martin on Newark Ave. had white Hanes Crew socks (6 pack) on sale today for $3.33. Wednesday March 4.

Although slightly imperfect. (and I've never had an issue yet)

Also, they had 3-pack of BVD knit boxer briefs (black and grey) for $4.99

Socks and underwear... why pay more than $5

Boxer briefs at the mall... up to $15 for one.

And that is how you save $$$$

Cafe Nia on 2nd and Brunswick
Home away from home
Home away from home

Hello. Surprised not to see a review on here of Cafe Nia on 2nd and Brunswick. It's apparently been open over a year and a half.

Went there for the first time today for lunch. Had a Turkey club sandwich.

Lunch was made fresh while I waited. It came with a decent size side house salad with fresh tomatoes with a light vinaigrette dressing. The lettuce was crisp and there were several varieties including arugula, iceberg and one other kind. A European style salad I guess.

The sandwich was a very good size and with the salad, the presentation was very nice. Down to the cherry tomatoes on the wooden sticks holding the sandwich together.

The place itself is very cute. The staff was very friendly and answered the questions I had. And prices were very reasonable for a turkey club w/salad and diet coke around 8 bucks.

I will definitely be returning.

35 Board Members?!?!?

I would love to know when they all met to discuss the safety and security of the organization they represent and are of the board of.

This is B.S.

We have all seen these big companies give their execs big salaries and then wind up closing shop. Just yesterday 10 Wachovia execs got 98.5 million. Thats crazy.

Being on a Board of Directors should be voluntary and compensation a token of appreciation. Not compensation that is CRAZY and above and beyond.

LSC should just close rather than ask for a LOAN from JC. Because they will close anyway. Mark my words.

These are bleak times. To see those salary figures... one has to wonder WTF is going on.

Time for a reality check.
