Don't be sorry. I love my job. I just happen to know that no one from the college would be wandering around Wayne and Baldwin. There are absolutely no campus buildings East of Bergen, despite what the map might indicate. Also SPC is not a neighborhood, so I don't know why you would describe it as so. If a crime happened in Paulus Hook would you say "Saint Peter's Prep Area"? McGinley Square would be the most accurate neighborhood, I suppose.

OR . . . you could just leave the headline as is, instead of re-writing it. The professional journalists actually do a fine job.

Thank you jsquared....Grovepath, please stop naming neighborhoods that don't exist and PLEASE....Learn your JC geography!

St Peters College is 6 blocks from Baldwin. St Peter's College isn't an "area" You downtowners need to stop making it up as you go along.

145K seems a bit high in a market that continues to trend downward.

What is the square footage? How many foreclosures in the area? How many bank owned properties are in the area? Are there any recent sales on comparably sized units?

These are all questions I would get answers on before I got serious about purchsing anything in this market.

As far as neighborhoods go, It's no better or worse than most in JC with the exception being Bergen Ave. Stay off of there after dark.

Best of Luck.

Re: Hospice in Downtown JC

I'm very sorry to hear about your partner. My father went into hospice 3 years ago when he was in the later stages of prostate cancer. He went to compassionate care downtown JC.

My whole family was against him being there once we realized that you're really not supposed to be there more than a couple of days. The hospice people told us that it was his best option. After him watching 3 people die right next to him, he demanded to go home.

I really wouldn't suggest hospice unless he or she is unconcious or on life support. It made the better part of my father's final 5 weeks miserable. He passed 2 weeks after leaving there and that was after being in there for 3 weeks.

Try having a nurse come in on the side to do the things that you are unable to do.

Hope all the best for you.

Is the raise in premium directly related to your flood insurance? I manage a 5 unit building in the heights and (knock wood) we haven't had an increase in a couple of years. We use State Farm and pay less than 2K per year. If they can quantify that the increase is directly related to the flood portion of your policy, then that would seem to be a downtown problem. Otherwise, it's time to look for a new agent.

Evidence?

I have dined there frequently. Police officers on breaks frequent the VIP as do old timers in the neighborhood. The "radical meeting place" is a block away.

I do like the idea of a Wawa or Quick Check somewhere in vicinity.

I grew up 1 block from where Ramzi Youseff (93 WTC bomber) lived and knew him by face. Would see them up there at 4:00 each morning as I was getting my breakfast. Would then see all of them pile into the Mosque that Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman ran as I was walking up to the Path station. Trust me, they've been meeting there for many years.

Re: Alternate choices for electric companies other than PSE&G
Home away from home
Home away from home

This article came from www.electricityderegulationblog.com

This is a real timely benefit to all NJ Residents , during a time when we all need to tighten our belts and save money! What this means to you is that you can save money on the everyday electric you use in your home or small business. Because when the residential electric deregulation law passes ,you will then have the right to tell your Electric distributor: PSEG ,JCPL or Rockland Electric where you want them to purchase YOUR electric from, for your Home,Investment building or Business! They will always remain your distributor and you will still pay all your bills to to them. You are just telling them to distribute Electric to you from a cheaper NJ approved supplier of your choice. Large Commercial Businesses have enjoyed this deregulation for over 10 yrs. It is only now that NJ is being deregulated in the variable rate market and homeowners are finally able to take advantage of the same cost saving benefits!
In a regulated electricity market, the consumer has no choice. They can only purchase from one source, the local utility. In a regulated market there is no incentive to offer cost saving solutions or innovative products and services. That?s now changing because people in many states now have the right to choose who they buy their electricity supply from.

Deregulation opens the generation portion of your bill to competition. This essentially turns the generated power into a market-based commodity, with the price dictated by supply and demand. Competitive markets lead to innovation and lower costs for customers. A good example of deregulation is long-distance telephone service.

In a deregulated market, the local utility is reduced into an electricity delivery company. This makes it possible for customers to choose an alternate source for the generation portion of their bill which is approximately two thirds of their total cost. All customers continue to rely on their local utility to deliver their electricity, provide service, read their meter and in most cases, bill the customer. This portion of the electricity service remains the same.

Retail competition, in the electricity markets, is superior to regulated service as it delivers customer-focused service, enables innovative product development and leads to the most efficient market price.

All consumers should be afforded the opportunity to participate in competitive retail energy markets and enjoy the benefits that only competitive retail markets can deliver.

Currently there are 20 states in various states of deregulation of their energy markets.
It takes time for a state to achieve true deregulation where the rates are at market rate pricing.

Re: Alternate choices for electric companies other than PSE&G

Energy deregulation is not a scam. You're able to shop the "supply" portion of your gas & electric bill. The delivery will always remain with PSE&G and you will always pay them for maintaining the infrastructure.

Safe to say that the average customer would probably save around 20% off of the supply end, not the total bill.

Better off doing your own research, then contacting energy brokers on your own.

If you do ask someone for an analysis, they would need copies of your past year of bills and a letter of authority allowing them to contact the utility to confirm usage patterns.

I would stay away from areas like New York Ave. I know people who live there near Griffith, and they wouldn't want to walk outside once it gets darker. I honestly think the Heights is no different than any other division of a city, there are good parts and not so good parts. But ultimately the choice is yours. Good Luck!

People shouldn't make blanket statements regarding streets that run several blocks. I live on New York Ave by Congress and it's a nice block. NY between South & Bowers is also a nice block. I can't speak for Griffith because I don't live over there. Newsflash people....The crips, bloods, Latin Kings are all over JC, not just the heights.

I'm a white male and the block I live on is at least 50% white. The city is diverse no matter what section you live in.

As far as Bayonne goes, it's been going downhill for years and the taxes are sky high. The schools are good but you better have at least 2 kids in the school system in order to break even on the taxes.

Worker clinging to life after suffering burns at Jersey City high-rise
By Charles Hack/The Jersey Journal
May 16, 2010, 8:17PM

Michael Dempsey/The Jersey JournalAn electrician who was working at 95 Columbus Drive in Downtown Jersey City is now clinging to life after suffering second- and third-degree burns at the high-rise.An electrician doing work at a Downtown Jersey City high-rise was rushed to the hospital early today with life-threatening second- and third-degree burns after power was restored to an electrical switch he thought was turned off, officials said.

Police were called to Pershing Plaza at 95 Christopher Columbus Drive at 12:06 a.m. and found the 47-year-old electrician lying face down on the first floor, reports said.

EMS rushed him and another 33-year-old electrician, who suffered minor burns to his left forearm, to the trauma center at Jersey City Medical Center, reports said.

But the burns to the 47-year-old were so severe, he was airlifted to the Burn Unit at St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston at about 3 a.m., Fire Director Armando Roman said.

The 47-year-old is listed in critical condition.

Both men work for Scholes Electric & Communication in Piscataway, reports said.
The less injured victim told police that his co-worker was changing a switch after checking that power had been shut down for the work. He said that while working on the switch, PSE&G restored power, reports said.

At that point, there was a large flash followed by an electrical fire that burned both victims, reports said.

David Hollenbeck, a spokesman for PSE&G, said that the cause of the accident is under investigation but a PSE&G crew working with the building engineer was advised that the contractors had completed their work and began to restore power.

When a PSE&G employee heard a flash he stopped restoring power immediately, Hollenbeck said.

Scholes Electric could not be reached for comment.

Police have notified the state Occupational Health and Safety Administration about the incident, reports said

Jersey City man robbed trying to buy gun, but gets money back, reports said
Home away from home
Home away from home

A 30-year-old Jersey City man told police he was trying to buy a gun when three teens robbed him, according to reports. He eventually got his money back.

Following instructions he was given for the buy, the man met the juveniles at Hutton Street and Palisade Avenue at about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday and got into their 1997 Nissan Maxima, reports said.

One of the teens drove to the corner New York and Ravine avenues, at which point the boy in the front passenger seat got out of the car, opened the back door and put a knife to the man's stomach, reports said.

The boy punched the man in the face and told him to get out of the car. The teen in the back seat then took man's $300 as the driver punched the victim in the face, reports said.

The victim jumped out of the car and managed with his own knife to slash two the Nissan's tires as the teens sped off onto Observer Highway, reports said.

But not ready to part with his money, the victim hailed a taxi and followed them, reports said.
The taxi quickly caught up to the Nissan, now with two flat tires, and the victim leaped out of the cab, grabbed a steel bar and smashed the teens' car rear window, reports said.

The robbers sped off, but the victim found a Hoboken police officer at the corner of Paterson Plank Road and Observer Highway and told the cop he had been robbed.

Hoboken police searched of the area and found the teens at the corner of Seventh Street and Madison Avenue.

Police recovered the $300 and the knife used in the robbery. The teens, all 17-year-olds, were charged with robbery, unlawful possession of weapons and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, reports said.

There was no indication from Jersey City police reports the victim was charged with any crimes.

Jersey City mayor nixes idea for Formula One race in Liberty State Park
Wednesday, May 05, 2010
By MELISSA HAYES
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER
Instead of a checkered flag, Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy waved a white flag yesterday - telling a city agency to back off the idea of bringing Grand Prix racing to Liberty State Park.

"After a review of the draft proposal prepared by the City's Tourism Office, I have come to the same conclusion...that this type of event is not suited for Liberty State Park," Healy said in a statement.

Healy's announcement came the day after The Jersey Journal broke news that Destination Jersey City, a nonprofit operated by the city's Economic Development, sent a draft proposal to Formula One that called for a five-year commitment with the first Grand Prix to be held at the park in 2012.

The proposal called for a 3.6-mile racetrack traversing the park's 600-land-acres.

"While we work to attract national and international events to our city, we must ensure that they are appropriate and will have the least impact upon the quality of life of our residents and our community," Healy said.

Sam Pesin, president of Friends of Liberty State Park, a group that works to protect the park, called Healy's announcement a "great relief."

"Mayor Healy did reach out to me yesterday and we had a very constructive conversation," he said. "Instead of a negative wasteful controversy, we can all focus on working together on positive efforts to benefit Jersey City and Liberty State Park."

Eugene Nelson, CEO of the Economic Development Corporation, could not be reached for comment.

State officials who operate Liberty State Park wouldn't say yesterday if they'd approve holding a Grand Prix race at the park if the request came to them.

"Each year Liberty State Park receives numerous requests for events to be held at this park," state Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Larry Ragonese said. "Each event is considered based on benefit to park users and its impact on the natural and historic resources on the site."

While the city's tourism official forwarded a copy of the draft proposal to the park's superintendent, a DEP employee, Ragonese said no formal application was made to the state.

Pesin noted that state and federal grants are funding a $32 million ecological restoration project at the park, which includes creating a 40-acre salt marsh, over 100 acres of forest and a network of nature trails
