N.J. mayor promises police transparency, but refuses to answer questions on what that meansJersey City’s mayor made a promise to hundreds of faith and community leaders this weekend that he would make the police department the “most transparent” that there is. Steven Fulop made this vow on Sunday in a public forum when asked about NJ.com’s reporting on police use of force, but he has failed for more than a week to respond to this news organization, first not returning phone calls and later refusing comment about possible reforms. https://www.nj.com/news/2018/12/nj-may ... s-on-what-that-means.html

Police took $5.5 million from residents in 5 months — and few have the means to challenge it, ACLU report saysThe drugs didn’t belong to Latonya Shaw. That was what authorities determined when they reduced her drug charges to a single count of obstruction, according to her lawyer. She was later sentenced to a year’s probation. But that didn’t stop authorities in Hudson County from taking the $7,020 she had planned to use on a new apartment for her three children. Instead, prosecutors went after the money under a controversial legal maneuver that allows law enforcement take money used in criminal enterprises and use it to toward their own budgets. https://www.nj.com/news/2018/12/police ... -it-aclu-report-says.html

Jersey City tells cops to keep arresting people for potJersey City cops received a reminder this week that pot is not legal yet. In a memo sent Monday by Deputy Police Chief Mark Miller, all police personnel were told they must arrest anyone they suspect of possessing marijuana, even small amounts. The warning comes five months after Mayor Steve Fulop announced on Twitter that his administration began deprioritizing marijuana arrests at the end of 2017, and as state lawmakers are on the cusp of legalizing recreational weed. https://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... _arresting_people_fo.html

When can cops ask your immigration status? Here are N.J.'s sweeping new rules limiting cooperation with ICEBy Kelly Heyboer | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com | Posted November 29, 2018 New Jersey's attorney general unveiled a broad new directive Thursday limiting when local police can ask someone's immigration status and turn unauthorized immigrants over to federal officials for deportation. Standing in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty in Liberty State Park in Jersey City, Attorney General Gurbir Grewal said the new rules -- called the Immigrant Trust Directive -- are designed to improve relations between local police and immigrant communities. The new rules will draw "a bright line" between federal immigration officials and local police at a time when immigrants are growing more fearful of deportation and federal crackdowns on illegal immigration, Grewal said. https://www.nj.com/expo/news/erry-2018 ... ops-ask-your-immigra.html

Jersey City payroll tax clears hurdle amid objectionsJERSEY CITY — Dozens of union workers crowded inside the City Council chambers on Wednesday to show their opposition to a proposed payroll tax, with business owners telling the council to put the brakes on a tax plan they say will devastate the business community.
