Mayor Fulop: Distribution convictions should be expunged if weed is legalized

JERSEY CITY -

A strong supporter of legalizing marijuana in the state is not satisfied with the current bill to do so in the state Legislature.

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop is in full support of the legalization of marijuana, but only if the state will also eliminate prior distribution convictions.

N.J. lost Amazon to Long Island City; can it win Gucci with $14.7M EDA incentive?

By Anjalee Khemlani
Trenton | Dec 11, 2018 at 11:57 am

The New Jersey Economic Development Authority on Tuesday approved a $14.7 million Grow New Jersey grant over 10 years to entice luxury brand Gucci to open a central U.S. customer hub in Jersey City, rather than Long Island City, Queens.

The company currently has 25 jobs in Secaucus and many customer service jobs around the country.

The company wants to bring 210 jobs to the planned hub, according to the application.

It plans a $6.6 million capital investment for the proposed office space at 70 Hudson St. near the Exchange Place PATH station.

N.J. mayor promises police transparency, but refuses to answer questions on what that means

Jersey City’s mayor made a promise to hundreds of faith and community leaders this weekend that he would make the police department the “most transparent” that there is.

Steven Fulop made this vow on Sunday in a public forum when asked about NJ.com’s reporting on police use of force, but he has failed for more than a week to respond to this news organization, first not returning phone calls and later refusing comment about possible reforms.

Police took $5.5 million from residents in 5 months — and few have the means to challenge it, ACLU report says

The drugs didn’t belong to Latonya Shaw. That was what authorities determined when they reduced her drug charges to a single count of obstruction, according to her lawyer. She was later sentenced to a year’s probation.

But that didn’t stop authorities in Hudson County from taking the $7,020 she had planned to use on a new apartment for her three children. Instead, prosecutors went after the money under a controversial legal maneuver that allows law enforcement take money used in criminal enterprises and use it to toward their own budgets.

More weekend PATH station closures are on the way. This time, the service changes will last nearly two years.

The Port Authority announced that its World Trade Center PATH station will close on weekends, starting in January 2019 and continuing through December 2020. The closures are necessary to replace equipment and rebuild tunnels that were “severely damaged” in Hurricane Sandy more than six years ago.

Phil Murphy may be called to testify before lawmakers investigating handling of sex assault allegations

Lawmakers investigating Katie Brennan’s allegations that the Murphy administration kept an accused rapist on as a senior staffer said Tuesday they may call the governor to testify.

'It's a problem for everybody': This is what the opioid epidemic looks like in Hudson County

Kim Luciano and her daughter Allison attended a vigil in May for Kearny residents who've fallen victim to drug overdoses. They wrote on balloons the names of loved ones and friends they've lost to drugs, a list that includes both of their fathers.

It was a somber day of healing and support, especially for Allison, who'd been battling heroin addiction for five years.

Jersey City tells cops to keep arresting people for pot

Jersey City cops received a reminder this week that pot is not legal yet.

In a memo sent Monday by Deputy Police Chief Mark Miller, all police personnel were told they must arrest anyone they suspect of possessing marijuana, even small amounts.

The warning comes five months after Mayor Steve Fulop announced on Twitter that his administration began deprioritizing marijuana arrests at the end of 2017, and as state lawmakers are on the cusp of legalizing recreational weed.

When can cops ask your immigration status? Here are N.J.'s sweeping new rules limiting cooperation with ICE

By Kelly Heyboer | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com | Posted November 29, 2018

New Jersey's attorney general unveiled a broad new directive Thursday limiting when local police can ask someone's immigration status and turn unauthorized immigrants over to federal officials for deportation.

Standing in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty in Liberty State Park in Jersey City, Attorney General Gurbir Grewal said the new rules -- called the Immigrant Trust Directive -- are designed to improve relations between local police and immigrant communities.

The new rules will draw "a bright line" between federal immigration officials and local police at a time when immigrants are growing more fearful of deportation and federal crackdowns on illegal immigration, Grewal said.

Jersey City cop cleared on charges wants back pay, legal fees reimbursed

JERSEY CITY — A Jersey City cop is demanding Jersey City reimburse his legal fees and award him back pay after a judge last month cleared him on charges that he took pay for work he did not perform.

An attorney for Michael O'Neill, who was suspended without pay in June 2016 when the charges were announced, says in a two-count lawsuit filed Monday in Hudson County Superior Court that the city has refused to respond to O'Neill's request for legal fees and demanded documentation on the back-pay request that O'Neill has already provided.

Judge's ruling puts vote on Jersey City's Polish statue in limbo

A Hudson County Superior Court judge on Friday threw another wrench into the proceedings surrounding the controversial Katyn monument in Jersey City when he nullified the City Council's June 13 ordinance that authorized moving the statue.

Judge Peter Bariso's Nov. 16 decision ends a lawsuit filed last month by an administration critic who alleged the ordinance was void because the city made improper changes to it before the council voted to adopt it.

Public speaks out on proposed Jersey City payroll tax

JERSEY CITY — Hundreds of people filled the City Council's chambers on Tuesday night to urge the council to pass a payroll tax that is intended to fill a yawning budget gap facing the city's public school system.

Supporters of the tax plan chanted "we hope you fund our schools" before the start of the meeting. They sent children up to each council member with bags containing water bottles — a reference to the lead contamination in the schools' drinking water — and a flyer describing the district's "funding crisis."

Jersey City payroll tax clears hurdle amid objections

JERSEY CITY — Dozens of union workers crowded inside the City Council chambers on Wednesday to show their opposition to a proposed payroll tax, with business owners telling the council to put the brakes on a tax plan they say will devastate the business community.

Parents, meanwhile, urged council members to support the tax, saying the expected revenue is needed to stave off major budget cuts at the public school district. A form of state aid that brought the district about $170 million this year is being taken away in chunks starting in July.

Jersey City hospital to pay 'voluntary' taxes after city challenged tax-exempt status

JERSEY CITY — After city officials appealed Jersey City Medical Center's tax-exempt status, the Downtown hospital has agreed to kick in $550,000 annually to the city's coffers for the next six years.

The agreement, which is part of a legal settlement between the hospital and the city, comes three years after a tax court judge ruled that Morristown Medical Center should pay Morristown property taxes because it fails to meet the legal test that it operates as a nonprofit. That ruling led dozens of towns statewide to sue hospitals seeking tax revenue.

Jersey City seems to have absorbed some of the walkability of its Big Apple neighbor. It has an 87 overall “walk score,” according to walkscore.com, which means that it’s very easy to get all your errands done on foot. The Historic Downtown and Journal Square neighborhoods are especially walkable, with high concentrations of hip bars and restaurants like Orale Mexican Kitchen and Dullboy, a small corner bar with tasty custom cocktails. No matter where in the city you live, it’s an easy commute by train into Manhattan.

Jersey City school board VP faces judge in ethics case

NEWARK — A Jersey City school board member accused of violating a state ethics law when he took legal action against a member of his own board of education faced an administrative law judge in Newark on Thursday.

Lorenzo Richardson, the board's vice president, is accused of violating a state law that bans school board members from representing any party other than the school board or district in a proceeding involving the district they serve. The ethics complaint that led to Thursday's roughly 90-minute hearing was filed by one of Richardson's fellow board members, Matt Schapiro.

Wonder no more, bagel lovers. The bagel shop that received the most love from our bagel-loving readers is that downtown family-owned Jersey City institution, Wonder Bagels on Jersey Avenue. (There are six other locations, including two in Bayonne, but the Jersey Avenue spot is the most popular; for proof: see its long lines.)
