Re: HPNA neglects to hold Nominations for Elections
Home away from home
Home away from home

Yesterday I had an exasperating e-mail exchange with an elected member of HPNA. I was attempting to find out when nominations would be held. Those that know me are aware that I avoid confrontation, and treat others with respect. I can?t say that this is true of the individual from HPNA that I was dealing with.

This is what I wrote:

Please confirm that there (will) be nominations for HPNA officers /directors at the November meeting. I didn't see a public announcement.

I have still not received a satisfactory reply, such as ?thanks for asking, Steve. We will have nominations in December or January at the latest.?

Later that day I e-mailed the President of HPHA and asked when their nominations and elections occur. I received a prompt and courteous reply, and I don't even live in Paulus Hook!

HPNA is part of the Downtown Coalition of Neighborhood Associations (DCNA).

The other associations are: Van Vorst Park Assoc. (VVPA), Harsimus Cove Assoc (HCA) and Historic Paulus Hook Association (HPHA). Nominations for these associations are:

VVPA - Nominations and elections are annual.

HPHA ? Nominations are prior to the December meeting.

HCA ? The nomination process started in October. elections at the annual meeting in November.

HPNA - Bylaws have not been ratified?

At the meeting tonight (11/2/2005) perhaps HPNA will show some respect to their neighbors and announce when nominations and elections will occur.

HPNA neglects to hold Nominations for Elections
Home away from home
Home away from home

The Hamilton Park Neighborhood Association (HPNA) have neglected to announce publically their nominations for elections on their November newsletter. For whatever reason (forgot? too busy?), it's unacceptable.

The HPNA are regulars at the City Council and Planning Board meetings and they claim to represent the community of Hamilton Park. But ask people around town what they think of the HPNA and you might get an earful, and some of it isn't so nice! Others will ask "who are they"?

They have six officers and 10 trustees. And each November, their seats are all up for grabs!

The HPNA have a reputation for being a "private club" and when residents are not encouraged or welcomed to get involved, and when Officers that have different opinions are asked to resign and worse, are no longer invited to their board meetings, then there's a problem.

It's understandable, that many folks do not have time to get involved. But then, there are those of us that do have time and want to be involved. It's unacceptable for the HPNA to neglect holding nominations this November and to delay another month or two until they are ready.

Next HPNA Meeting is Wednesday Oct. 2
7:30 pm
Coredero School, Erie Street, bet. 8th & 9th

If the HPNA does not welcome new people to it's board of directors or fails to hold democratic elections on an annual basis, then we don't need them representing us!

Re: The Beacon

The New York Times has an article on the Beacon:

Old Hospital Yields Quirky Apartments
By ANTOINETTE MARTIN
Published: October 30, 2005

THE first apartments resulting from the transformation of the historic Art Deco buildings that served for seven decades as this city's medical center are about to go on the market.

----------------
Since so many people died there, do I need the Ghostbusters to excorcise the place if I buy one? The buildings do look scary to me.

Congratulations & good luck to Phil & Andrea!

The story made it to 1010WINS. The more people know about it, the better.

Eminent Domain: Jersey City To Seize Bar

Oct 28, 2005 11:15 am US/Eastern
(1010 WINS) (JERSEY CITY) The city plans to use its power of eminent domain to seize a neighborhood bar and turn the land over to a Roman Catholic high school, which wants the land to expand its football field.

That has civil liberties proponents worried.

``This is one of the most egregious cases of eminent domain in the country,'' Steve Anderson of the Institute for Justice in Washington told The Star-ledger of Newark for Friday's editions.

Star Ledger:

Jersey City tries to seize bar for private school's field
Friday, October 28, 2005
BY STEVE CHAMBERS
Star-Ledger Staff

The Golden Cicada tavern in Jersey City sits alongside some of the state's most valuable real estate.

But when the city's redevelopment agency moved this summer to seize the bar and the back room apartment where owner Cheng Tan lives, it wasn't to make way for another gleaming office tower or upscale residential project.

Instead, the city plans to turn the property over to a Catholic high school, so it can expand its football field.

This is fantastic news. I really was wondering how out-of-hand this could possibly get before this guy got fair representation.

A football field. St Peter's administration, students and parents should be ashamed of themselves.

A shuttle to Exchange Place serves 3 user groups - people who work at Exchange Place, people who work in lower Manhattan and people who work near a light rail station. I suspect that people who work at Exchange Place might find the Beacon an interesting proposition. Working and living in NJ might beat working here and living in NY from a tax perspective. I'd be curious to see how NYC's lower real estate taxes offset NJ's lower income taxes. Anyone have any data? Has our abatement largesse made NJ a really good deal for people moving here from NYC?

The ACLU will definitely represent Cheng Tan. Here is the press release:

------------------------------

ACLU of New Jersey Defends Property Owner Against Government Seizure of Land to Give to Religious School

October 18, 2005

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: media@aclu.org

NEWARK, NJ -- The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey announced today that it is representing tavern owner Cheng "Terry" Tan, who is fighting the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency's attempt to take his restaurant by eminent domain. Jersey City officials want to take Tan's land to give it to a parochial school, St. Peter's Prep, for its football field.

If you're saying what I think you're saying (the Beacon is closer to Exchange Place than it is to JSQ) than you're wrong.

Plug the directions into a system like maps.yahoo.com. The Beacon is the Old Jersey City Medical Center, which had a main address of 50 Baldwin. JSQ is basically 1 Path Plaza. That comes out to 1 mile, and it's exaggerated, since they are driving directions, while you can walk the wrong way down a one-way street. I'd guess it's closer to 8/10ths of a mile.

On the other hand, 50 Baldwin to 1 Exchange Place comes out to 1.8 miles, slightly exaggerated because a car has to go around 1 block at the end. Regardless, it's still twice as far to walk to Exchange Place.

I figure the shuttle buses from the Beacon are chosing the route to Exchange Place for 3 reasons:

- shorter PATH ride
- nicer surroundings at that station
- easy, straight drive

I went to a showing and the apartments are amazing. I'm wondering if I should buy there, but then the walk to PATH is rather long compared to a 2-minute schelp that I now have.

"In Hudson County municipalities like Hoboken, Bayonne and Jersey City, the heavy rainfall caused sewer systems to overflow, forcing water up through toilets and bathtubs and causing sewers to back up onto residential streets and major roadways.

"The water has no place to go," said Joseph Beckmyer, chief engineer for the Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority.

As a result, Mr. Beckmyer said, untreated water was being dumped into the Hudson River, as permitted by the state's environmental regulations. Several large blockages of storm drains were probably contributing to the flooding, he said. Work crews were trying to unclog the smaller drains, but engineers will have to wait for the water to subside before clearing the larger ones, he said. "
